What is ArchivesSpace?

On this site, you can search the finding aids for Bridgewater State University's archives and special collections. Finding aids describe the content and context of our collections, and allow you to identify items of interest for your research.

Access

Our collections are available for use in our reading room, on the 3rd floor of the Maxwell Library. Some finding aids contain links to digitized portions of individual collections, but in most cases the bulk of the collection material can only be viewed in person at the reading room. Contact us at archives@bridgew.edu to learn more or to schedule a research visit.

Archives and Special Collections

The records in the University Archives, dating from the founding of the College in 1840, document the history of Bridgewater State University from its beginning as the Bridgewater State Normal School, dedicated to the training of teachers, to the present day university with numerous undergraduate and graduate programs.

The Maxwell Library Special Collections focus on rare books and manuscript collections from numerous genres, including politics, education, literature, sports, and organizations of many different types. The rare and unique book collection can be searched through the library's online book catalog. Further content can be found in our digital repository, Virtual Commons.
