I knew it had been a while since I'd done one of these, because I'd been so upset with myself about not having much output the last few years. Um. It's been five years. Yeah. On the upside, I was really intent on writing more in 2018, and I actually did. This is about the only thing I can say for 2018, but small victories, yo.
Hey there. So, I've been mulling over the idea of having an h/c-focused con some time in 2019 and seeing how it goes. Because I'm US-based, it would probably need to be in the states, which sucks because my two fave h/c-peeps are NOT US-based, but if it works, maybe over the years we can move around.
In any case, if this makes your ears perk up, would you go fill out this three question survey? And maybe, if you know other people who might like this, tell THEM to fill it out?
Yes, that's right. Not one, but TWO BBs happened basically within a month of each other.
Title:No Fire Can Ever Warm Me Author:arsenicjade Fandom/Characters: Political Animals, TJ Hammond, Doug Hammond, background canon and original characters Rating: NC-17 Warnings: graphic torture, past alcoholism and drug use, homophobic language and actions Summary: TJ is kidnapped by extremists who want to show the world their work. Doug is stuck as Chief of Staff, waiting for the real heroes to bring his brother home.
AN:
1. Huge thanks to thepouncer for the beta, which made the story stronger and more well-put together in every way, all remaining mistakes are mine and only mine.
2. Another big thanks to the mods of WIP Big Bang, without whom this definitely would still be languishing.
3. The art is by Cassandra S. Fisher, who volunteered early for this fic, something that made me really happy. The link to it will be up shortly, please go let her know how lovely it is.
4. This is being used for my "torture" square on my hc_bingo card. From over a year ago. Shush. (Hence, for luuv2shop)
Title: Fixer Upper Author:arsenicjade Artist:fictionforlife Rating: NC-17 Pairing(s): Sterek. Lots of canon pairings in the background, as well as past canon pairings having happened. Word count: ~39.1k Warnings: Rape, torture, captivity, PTSD Summary:
After the events of 5a, Stiles is estranged from Scott--and by association, the pack. Derek is off finding himself, or, at least, Germany and some other places. There's a lot of texting and post cards and then Derek comes back to find Stiles missing. Worse, nobody seems to remember Stiles existing.
Art is IN the story, but FictionForLife lives literally across the world from me and will post it to her spaces when she wakes up. I will update this post with direct links at that time. In the meantime, please head over to her LJ or her tumblr and let her know how amazing she is.
Is there anyone out there available and willing to beta ~30k of TW (tw: rape, torture), for both SPAG, but also for plot problems, things that need to be fleshed out, things that need to be pared down, etc., etc.? (Or might you know anybody...)
This year's Yuletide's posted inside, since it has become clear that I am too lazy to do a separate post for them.
I...didn't actually want to do this, because 2015 was a year of epic fail for me in terms of writing, but my therapist was pretty much like "yup, that's why you need to do it." So here we are, friends.
And the part where I answer questions about what I'm thinking about my own writing.
Favorite of the year: Probably Turtle Shells. Not because it's particularly good, honestly, but because this year was defined by me being so Depressed throughout January - March that writing was an impossible feat, moving cross-country in April, starting a new job in May, losing my grandmother in August, and one of my rabbits in November. For all this, it wasn't a bad year: the new job is an enormous blessing, and I'm definitey doing well in my new environs now that I'm settling. But April was the first moment I COULD write again--for the record, I've literally NEVER been so Depressed I couldn't write, so that was scary as fuck--and starting with Dickens was a really good idea. I love these two together, and it took me back to when I was a kid and used to make up random crossover pairings and convince my friend that, "no, that would totally work." Basically, I had FUN writing this, and in a year where pretty much every word was a struggle, that meant a lot.
Best of the year: You Can Take the Future. Possibly because I'm finally back in a place where writing isn't an uphill climb every single time I try to do it. It's still not as easy as it used to be. I kind of feel like the poison that was three years of suicidal-ideation level Depression is still working itself out of my bloodstream. But in a year where I didn't feel great about my actual Yuletide assignment because I knew I couldn't give my recipient something zie'd actually enjoy, finding this treat was a blessing. I enjoyed the hell out of writing it and I felt like my characterization was back in groove.
Most underappreciated:Second Chapter. Not because it's a masterpiece, but because it saddens me how male-focused the Hamilton fandom is. I'm not saying that the show's not male focused. (Trust me, I have a whole theory about how Fun Home is exactly as revolutionary, but is written and driven by peeps with ovaries, so it doesn't count.) Or even that I'm surprised. It's simply that that's a fandom that's built on the high-octane fuel of social justice and yay!represented!Otherness, but the main interest in the fandom seems to be play-acted Otherness. (Aka, none of these dudes were actually not-white. Surprise.) Idk, I just wish there seemed to be more interest in the women of Hamilton, I guess. (That's not to say I don't love the show, and think it's brilliant. B/c I do. Or, for that matter, that I'm the world's foremost feminist. B/c, yeah, no. I was just hoping for more kindred souls in the fandom. That's all.)
Most fun to write: Between Turtle Shells, for all the reasons I just talked about, or Genuine Article. Both Dickens-verse, both mixing in a fun, new fandom, so, 3/4 indulgence, 1/4 getting back on the horse, all that. Good times.
Sexiest fic:Switch Things Up. Pieeeeercing. Possessiveness. Uh. Something else that starts with a P?
"Holy crap, that's wrong even for you": Nothing. I failed miserably in this category this year. I mean, yes, it takes a lot for me, but still. Don't worry, I'm formulating something currently that will probably work for this meme next year.
Fic that shifted my own preconceptions of the characters:The Private Life of Cougar, mostly becuase as much as I love this character, I just hadn't really spent any time inside his head until now.
Hardest to write: Also, The Private Life of Cougar. My recipient asked for a bunch of completely reasonable, totally doable things--if you're anyone but me. And I do Yule for the experience of writing for someone. I love that. So it sucked from the moment I saw the request that I knew I just wasn't going to be able to deliver. Which colored a lot of my writing experience on this.
Biggest disappointment:Because Kafka. This is one of those that I had been thinking about for YEARS, and it was probably never going to be what I wanted it to be, but it really wasn't even close.
Biggest surprise:You Can Take the Future, in terms of the fact that I didn't see my interest in this fandom coming, that I knew I needed something, but I didn't know it was this, and also, people's responses to this. So, yeah, this one. Kinda came out of nowhere.
Most telling: Despite my blech-feelings toward it, prolly Because Kafka. Found family, animal shifters, torture...I mean. Someone out there was like, "child abuse, starvation, useless protectiveness--must be reading an Arsenic story."
Title:Unspoken Author:arsenicjade Fandom/Pairing: MCU, Natasha/Steve/Bucky Rating: PG-13 Warnings: well, the series has torture and noncon, but I think this part is pretty clean Summary: Second fic in the A/B/O-verse. Bucky has stayed. Natasha's working on believing things won't fall apart.
AN: Thank you muchly to spatz for the beta. For luuv2shop for her support of the LLS. Written for the "unexpected consequences of planned soul bonding" square on my hc_bingo card, which is only, you know, over a year old now. Whatevs.
Hey, guys, is there anybody who could do a quick turn around beta on a Losers fic ~4.500-5k sometime this week? I would prefer it be more than just SPAG, but honestly, at this point, I'm not gonna hold out too hard on that issue.
As always, I want to encourage others to participate in this, either by seeing what you have that others could use, or putting your own up, or both. (I like doing both.)
I've been insanely lucky this year to land a job, so really, there's just not that much I can ask for. All the same, I came up with five things :-)
1. I just lost one of my buns. I'd had him eight years, and his passing was very sudden, and I'm grieving. So, if you could do any of these things, I would love it. Give something, anything (including donations of food, time, or things that are not cash money) to a local House Rabbit Network/Society or Friends of Rabbits. If you are thinking of getting a rabbit, ADOPT. Or, if you know someone who's thinking of getting a rabbit for someone as a present, sit them down and have them read this article, or other articles written by the groups that I've mentioned above.
2. As always, I would love art for my fiction. This is never going to stop being a wish. I could have my entire walls filled with art from my stories (um, spoiler, I don't) and I would still want more. Just saying. My stuff can be found in my journal, on my site, or some of it at AO3.
3. Care packages. I asked for these last year, and got a couple of ones, and honestly, they were sort of the highlight of my holiday season. If you're interested, please email at arsenicjade at gmail dot com and we can chat.
4. In the only-the-universe-can-bring-me-this category: a life-partner. Again, as always, *g*
5. Good, long h/c slavefic, hookerfic, or prisonerfic with pairings that work for me. (Or profic, that can sometimes work, too.) Man, if someone recs me one of these that I haven't read, they will be my favorite person ever. Or writes one. Whatever.
Title:Because Kafka Author name:arsenicjade Beta name:spatz Characters: Clint Barton Fandom/Universe: Avengers/Gundam Wing Rating: R Word count: ~16,500 Warnings: past character death, child abuse, captivity, whipping, human experimentation Summary: Clint's a were-leopard. The world doesn't look kindly on shapeshifters, not even the ones that are just kids.
AN: Huge thanks to Shinysylver for being a rockstar and allowing those of us who are anti-social, but like a challenge and a deadline to write for this marvel_bang without having to commit to pairing with an artist. And, as always, for running an organized, awesome challenge.
This fic would be TERRIBLE if not for the intervention of my beta, Spatz, who spent a ton of time helping me craft this into something coherent and narratively interesting.
You do NOT need to know Gundam Wing to read this fic. I promise.
I THINK I caught everything that needs to be warned for in this fic, if I missed something, politely inform me, thanks.
Because I am nothing if not persistent, this fic is for the "unwanted transformation" square on my now over-a-year old hc_bingo card. Also, for luuv2shop, for sponsoring that card.
Title:Switch Things Up Author:arsenicjade Fandom/Pairing: MCU, Pepper/Tony/Maria Rating: NC-17 Warnings: BDSM, Piercing Summary: Tony's feeling a little betrayed. Part of the Not By The Playbook series.
AN: Unbeta'ed, my apologies. Pure personal choice, in this instance. Written for luuv2shop for her support of LLS. Written for the "fall from grace" square on my hc_bingo card.
Title:The Genuine Article Author:arsenicjade Fandom(s)/Pairing: GW/TW, Stiles/Heero Rating: PG-13 Warnings: None, really. Some references to child abuse. Summary: Stiles is a real boy. Heero's always wanted to be one.
AN: Huge thanks to my beta, ihearttwojacks, all remaining mistakes are mine. For my favorite, egelantier, with all the love in my heart.
Title:Turtle Shells Author:arsenicjade Fandoms/Pairings: Gundam Wing/Teen Wolf, Une/Derek Hale Rating: NC-17 Warnings: none, really, but here there be adult times Summary: Une's picked up a regular on her busking circuit.
AN: Thanks to conditionsofhappiness and ihearttwojacks for the great beta!
Title:Lost and Found Author:arsenicjade Rating: R Pairings/Fandom: MCU, Steve/Natasha, Tony/Pepper Warnings: whipping, graphic depictions of violence Summary: In taking down SHIELD and Hydra, the team discovers something from Steve's past. Part of the SES-verse.
AN: Written for luuv2shop for supporting the LLS. Written for the "whipping" square for my hc_bingo. HUGE thanks to spatzfor the beta.
How absolutely lovely! Found this via het-reccers and you just capture Tony in all his glory and insecurity so well. I loved his conversations and interactions with the whole team but especially that…
I've never particularly liked tumblr, but it's where fandom was, so I eventually gave in, roughly about a year ago. I'm sort of *shrug* about what's going on now.

Classic Holmes fan here (NOT Sherlock). Glad to see you back again. I'm seeing quite a move back to DW at least. Hope it continues.
