UFC Betting Basics
Moneyline Betting
MMA betting relies primarily on moneyline betting, which is pretty simple once you have an understanding of how betting on UFC events works. To see the moneyline in action, let’s take a look at the odds on an actual fight from a UFC Fight Night card.
The betting odds on a bout between Alex Pereira and Joshua Van are shown as:
- Alex Pereira +145
- Joshua Van -170
In this example, Van is the betting favorite, which is signified by the – (minus) before his odds. Pereira is the underdog, as signified by the + (plus) before his odds. What the -170 for Van means is that you have to risk $170 to profit $100 if you want to wager on Van. It’s important to note that you do not have to wager to profit $100, but moneyline odds are given in relation to $100 amounts to make it easy to calculate how much you have to risk to win your desired amount.
For Pereira, the +145 means that for every $100 you wager on Pereira, you will profit $145 if he wins the fight. Again, you do not have to wager $100 on Pereira. You could wager $20 to profit $29, $50 to profit $72.50, or $300 to profit $435. The choice is yours.
Method of Victory
Choosing the winner of the fight, as was shown above, is the most popular way to wager on MMA fights. But there are plenty of other options for betting on fighters. In the example MMA fight mentioned above, you can also wager on how the fight winner will be determined, whether it’s by knockout, decision, or by submission. An example of those odds are as follows:
- Van by KO/TKO/DQ +138
- Pereira by KO/TKO/DQ +450
- Van by Decision +300
- Pereira by Decision +400
- Van by Submission +1200
- Pereira by Submission +600
- Draw +6600
As you now know from above, Van by KO/TKO/DQ returns $138 for a $100 wager in this example. But now Van must win by one of those three ways for you to win your wager. If Van wins by decision or disqualification, those who wager on him to win by KO/TKO/DQ have a losing wager, even though they had the correct fighter winning the bout.
Round Betting
Betting on a fighter to win in individual rounds is another way of making UFC picks, but here you’re asked to pick which specific round the fighter wins in. The fighter can win by submission, knockout, or disqualification. The only requirement is that you predict the correct round in which the fight is won. Here, an example of the odds could be:
- Van Round 1 +300
- Van Round 2 +500
- Van Round 3 +800
- Pereira Round 1 +550
- Pereira Round 2 +800
- Pereira Round 3 +1400
If you pick Van to win in the second round and he does, a $100 wager would return $500 in winnings, while a $30 wager would give you $90 in profits. But if Van wins in the first or third rounds, or by decision, your wager would be graded as a loss.
Total Rounds
Betting total rounds in an MMA fight is the equivalent of over/under betting in team sports. In this market, you are betting on how long a bout is going to last. For example, you might see a line like the following:
- Over 1.5 rounds -150
- Under 1.5 rounds +120
In this market, a half-round consists of 2:30 of a standard five-minute round. If you wager the fight will last longer than the midway point of the second round in the above example, you would be on the over. If you expect a fun fight that ends before that point, you’d take the under. Bettors should also remember when making their MMA picks that UFC title fights consist of five rounds, while most non-title fights are three rounds.
Another wager offered is simply betting if a fight goes the distance or not. If you wager that a fight goes the distance, you need all of the rounds to be completed without a fight stoppage. If you wager the fight does not go the distance, the fight needs to be won via any method other than a decision. Some fighters are a lot more likely to win fights inside the distance than others, which bettors need to be aware of before locking in their MMA picks.
Parlay Wagering
Parlay wagering in UFC is the same as it is in other sports. Parlay wagering is the act of combining two or more outcomes in a bet with a higher rate of return for picking all of the outcomes correctly. A loss on any one of the pieces of a parlay makes the parlay a losing bet, so it does require you to be perfect on these UFC picks.
Like other sports, a parlay payout in UFC is calculated based on the odds for each specific outcome in combination. Parlaying several underdogs could mean a huge return, but it comes with the trade-off that a bettor needs all of those UFC picks to win in order to cash the ticket. You need to weigh the risks against the potential rewards when making UFC parlays during each fight week.
UFC Betting Strategies
Those betting on UFC events are best served to remember that betting on MMA is a marathon and not a sprint. With no offseason, UFC events take place year-round. It’s not realistic to expect to win your MMA picks on every card. The key is long-term profit and the following strategies can help you do that.
- Bankroll Management
- Odds Shopping
- Sportsbook Bonuses
Bankroll Management
Your bankroll is the money you have allocated for sports betting. Protecting your bankroll is essential to successful UFC betting. The most common mistake made by sports gamblers is overextending their bankroll or betting beyond their means. Betting a set amount on each fight you wager on and not changing that amount until your bankroll grows is a good strategy to weather the ups and downs of MMA betting.
Odds Shopping
With UFC betting and all sports betting, the key is to find the best odds you can for every bet you place. It can be quite helpful for sports bettors to keep accounts at as many sportsbooks as possible. Doing so will allow you to get the best odds you can for every fight across a variety of betting markets, which can increase your profits and decrease your losses over the long haul.
Sportsbook Bonuses
Using different sportsbook promos when opening an account at new UFC betting sites is also a good idea. Doing this gives you a chance to earn bonus bets or second chances if your first UFC picks lose. If there are sportsbooks in your state that you haven’t opened an account with yet, it is worth looking at the new customer offers at those sites to see if you can squeeze any extra value out of them.
