CHARACTER INFO
• Character Name: Matthew "Matt" Murdock
• Character Age: 32
• Character Canon: Marvel Cinematic Universe (for simplicity sake)
• Canon Point: Mid-season 3, Episode 6
• Character History: HERE.
• Character Personality:
— Kind. Despite his hardships and witnessing a number of tragedies and suffering throughout his childhood and growing up, such as losing his father, never knowing his mother, and never being adopted out of St Agnes Orphanage, Matt has never lost his sense of kindness and goodness. He still maintains a strong moral compass and a mild temperament as 'Matt Murdock' even when he is often forced to the breaking point (usually during his guise as Daredevil). He refuses to kill any of the bad guys that he fights, believing that everyone no matter who they are, deserves a second chance.
A lot of the anger and frustration that he feels when people let him down or he loses good people to horrible circumstances becomes internalized instead, as he would never intentionally inflict his own rage out on anyone else. (Of course, this has its exceptions, particularly when his loved ones are endangered, but he still draws the line at cold-blooded murder. This also means that he and Frank Castle share a lot of friction as they both have different ideas of deserved justice.)
— Loyal. Once Matt has formed a bond with someone or he believes in their goodness, he will attach himself to it and fight tooth and nail for them — as both Matt Murdock, the lawyer and regular guy, but also as Daredevil, the vigilante hero. He is amiable and even charming, but he generally keeps himself at a fair distance from those around him for fear of one day being abandoned by them.
Thus, those he chooses to be close to he intends for the relationship to be permanent in some way, even at the cost of his own feelings and sometimes his beliefs. His relationship with Foggy and Karen are an example of the people he will do anything for; they will even drive him to make decisions that are unfair to them, all in the name of protecting them from harm. Another example of his loyalty comes from his relationship with Elektra Natchios, whom he begins to lose himself to, in order to prove the goodness within her.
— Idealistic. Above all else, and again, despite all of the hardships he'd endured, Matt remains idealistic. He continues to work on, and chooses to believe that when it comes down to it, goodness and justice will eventually prevail. It must. He hangs all of his own beliefs and his faith in this idea. Several times over the course of the series, Matt and Foggy will reiterate the strength and belief in the justice system. It's partially why he believes so strongly in the law, and why he decided to study it.
He is steadfast to his belief in never killing anyone because he believes that everyone deserves a second chance, and grapples with this throughout all of his canon with a focus on one person (Wilson Fisk) who constantly challenges his beliefs, particularly whether this man who has harmed so many even deserves a second chance, by tempting him towards the darkness. And yet, even still, he chooses to put Fisk in jail rather than end his life.
— Stubborn. When Matt gets an idea or a plan in his head, he will not back down. He is determined to see it through, sometimes to a fault, especially when the cost doesn't seem to matter anymore. This often puts him at a disadvantage against both his friends and his enemies who can use this to predict what Matt will do next. He stubbornly decides not to let anyone know that he's alive, keeping his best friends in the dark for weeks. Knowing Matt is on a quest to stop Wilson Fisk, at any and all costs, allows his friends to predict what Matt will do next as well as where he might go, thus having the ability to stop him in his tracks.
— Reckless. Matt often thinks and acts based on his emotional state (despite being all else: logically minded), and in reaction to the things that happen to the people he cares about.
Overall, he cares very little for his own well-being and self-preservation, often taking as many punches his body is physically able to, and then relying on adrenaline to sustain himself during the rest of a fight. He throws caution to the wind when chasing after a bad guy, literally putting his body through extenuating circumstances such as running through various rooftop terrains, scaling walls, and squeezing himself through spaces in order to never lose track of his mark. This happens when he gives chase to going after Ben Poindexter/Bullseye, and when pursuing members of the Hand, particularly when confronting Nobu. He often winds up with bloodied fists and multiple bruises and wounds, most of them surface-level, some requiring stitches. Sometimes he endangers himself to the point of near-death and requires some miracle-saving aid to bring him back from the brink.
— Self-Loathing. It comes with the territory of being Catholic and harbouring a lifetime of guilt over the tragedies he'd suffered in his youth, but Matt has grown up blaming himself for the tragedies around him. He feels responsible for the death of his father, despite being equally angry with his choice to abandon and leave him alone in the world and internalizes the guilt from his death. Losing Elektra becomes a responsibility that he also takes on his shoulders, feeling as though his failure to save her both from herself and then physically from harm during the Midland Circle accident is his fault. He takes on the safety and protection of Hell's Kitchen and New York City at large on himself, and when men like Wilson Fisk manage to sink their claws into the very systems set in place to protect the people, he feels guilty that he can't do better, or do more.
He often cites Daredevil as the darkness within him come to life, and as something inevitable; a choice that he must either consciously deny or accept. He grapples with his vigilante alter-ego throughout the show on many occasions, conflicted between wanting to help people anonymously and doing more for them behind the mask because he can't do enough as Matt Murdock in the courtroom. However, he has also been challenged with putting the suit away for long periods of time because Daredevil has become a liability to those he cares about, and most of all, a liability to himself as the gateway to acting recklessly.
• Character Skills:
• resourceful
• quick-thinking
• martial arts: boxing, Muay Thai, Kung Fu, Judo, Wushu, Aikido, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, Capoeira, Jeet Kune Do, Taekwondo, Eskrima, Silat, Ninjutsu, wrestling.
• medical aid
• acrobatics: gymnastics and parkour.
• lawyering: aka diplomacy? It could help in matters of tension between either members of the Milton community or any outsiders they may come across.
• Character Inventory:
— ITEM ONE: his standard fare sunglasses; they're circular shaped with a red tint
— ITEM TWO: a blind man's walking stick
— ITEM THREE: his NY ID
• Important Notes: As per previous discussion with the mods, Matt will arrive with his superhero enhanced senses (hearing, touch, taste, smell) at half-capacity. This will mean that while his senses will still work in order to allow him accessibility around the game's world, but his senses will half-heightened, almost as though he were underwater. A good example of this effect on him comes from canon, just before his proposed canon point, when he had survived a building falling on top of him. When he begins to heal and pick himself up, Matt describes the feeling as being underwater. He can still sense the world around him, but its clarity is cut down.
His skills and abilities in the above martial arts styles, as a result of long years of training, will remain intact — however the enhanced agility and dexterity that provides him an edge against equally enhanced supervillains is nerfed. This will mean Matt will be forced to exercise more caution with a much lower limit against how many hits he can take and how much physical damage he can sustain.
