@keeper

Hi! I looove chatting so please come talk to me any time!

This is an interest check for any current players that are interested in joining the IN THE NIGHT mod team in any capacity. Comments to this post are screened.

As we mentioned in our recent mod announcement, we don't yet know which exact positions we need filled, and this interest check is meant to help us get a feeler for who's available and willing to step up. This is not an application! We do plan to open mod applications to the game at large once we firm up our needs; that process will be a lot more official and informative, we promise.

For now, we're likely looking for 1-2 "helper mods" to assist us with the day to day tasks that keep the game running. Helper mods assist with a bunch of stuff that we'll list below, but they don't handle plot stuff or player issues. Danielle and I will continue to handle that sort of overhead stuff.

Helper mods assist with the following:
  • reading apps
  • processing AC
  • processing item requests, player plots/projects, deaths, hiatuses/drops, etc.
  • updating the game history page
  • maintaining the game pages and lists
  • writing the weekly bulletin
  • writing TDM/event prompts
  • running explorations (with instruction/supervision)
  • playing minor NPCs such as forest spirits and Night Market vendors (all mods have an open invitation to play an NPC at the Night Market)
  • modding the discord server
  • pretty much anything we need help with!

To be clear, we're not necessarily looking for one person to take over all of these duties. These are just the type of duties we're looking for help with. Typically, some of these duties are either permanently assigned to one mod (the AC mod does all the AC stuff) or assigned as-needed (explorations and event prompts).

We're also open to taking on "bonus mods" (we'll come up with a better name, we swear) that would only be responsible for one or two regularly occurring duties, such as processing AC, reading apps, or updating the game history page. A "bonus mod" would be responsible for the 1-2 duties they take on without needing to be available for as-needed assignments.

The summary here is that our mod positions are flexible and you will be able to set your own "schedule". This is a volunteer position for a fun hobby, not a job, and while we of course expect our mods to take the position seriously, what you're willing to contribute is up to you.

Finally, here's a short list of the requirements we do have for mods joining our team:
  • Communication skills are the most important part of being a mod! You'll need to communicate clearly and efficiently with your fellow mods, as well as with the playerbase!

  • Attention to detail is also real important to us. Mods need to be able to follow instructions without direct supervision. Helper mod duties will typically require them to either follow an existing format to keep the game/our mod voice consistent, or to follow a set of instructions doled out by either Mippins or Danielle to create prompts or exploration responses. We delegate a lot, and both communication skills and attention to detail are important in ensuring that delegation runs smoothly for the whole team.

  • You'll need to join the game's discord server if you're not in it already, as that's where all of our mod magic happens. You won't be required to engage in the game chat at large, but we do need you in there to be part of the mod channels.

  • Familiarity with google docs/sheets and basic html is required, though we don't mind a bit of teaching. We use a lot of google sheets to keep track of stuff behind the scenes, so that's the big thing! As far as html goes, we have templates for big stuff like all our game pages with fancy formatting, so we're just looking for confidence in navigating those templates and creating small bits of html (lists and stuff, we're not terribly fancy) as needed. It's more important that you're able to understand and navigate html than to generate it yourself.

  • Please keep in mind that the game runs on EST time and both Mippins and Danielle are in US timezones. You don't need to be in a US timezone to mod with us, but be prepared to be flexible if you're in a timezone that doesn't align neatly with the game's schedule. Our timed updates (AC, apps, stuff like that) all happens at midnight EST, while other scheduled posts (event posts, the tdm, etc.) typically go up around 6pm EST. Mippins and Danielle do most modwork in that 6pm-midnight window.

If you have any questions about modding or about how our team already functions, feel free to ask below! We're happy to go into more detail about any of this so that you know what you're getting yourself into before formal applications open up. All comments are screened, but we'll strategically unscreen our responses to questions so that y'all can ask anonymously but everyone still has access to the same info. If you ask something that's specific to your circumstances, we'll keep that reply screened.

Please let us know below if you're at all interested in joining our team! As a reminder, this is just an interest check. Right now, we're only curious as to who's interested in helping out and what they can help out with. There's no form to fill out (that'll come with official applications later), so just go ahead and comment with whatever info you feel is most relevant at this time! And thanks so much for throwing your hat into the ring. We appreciate you very much!

The Helix station's blueprints reveal that it was built to suit its name, as the facility seems to be laid out in a vague spiral shape, with large domed bays connected by tunnels. There are sections of the station set aside for dorm-style crew living quarters. There's a large cafeteria which apparently doubles as a meeting space, a recreation bay with a gym and space for games and general hanging out, a small medical bay, a mechanical bay that seems to be the command center for the station, a launch bay for the subs, and about a dozen various laboratory and storage bays. One of the larger bays is labelled "nuclear power", which is where that plutonium gets put to use.

The station was built to house roughly 100 crew members, though the blueprints for one of the housing bays comes with a note explaining that this section of the lab was badly damaged when residents in town decided to launch nuclear warheads to defend against an approaching World Eater.

As far as tech goes, since none of us are quantum physicists, they have the equipment on the station capable of:
- tracking portal activity (who/what comes through, plus sciency stuff like energy fluctuations, signatures/coordinates of universes it's contacted in some way, etc.; she includes some sample data*)
- navigating the portal (this is how Pluto "special orders" items)
- tracking seismic, weather, and other geological data (like what the lake gets up to and stuff)
- very roughly tracking the World Eaters (only works if they're within a couple hundred miles; Robin would know first if one showed up in the area, says the notes)
- a bit less roughly tracking the forest spirits lurking in the lake (of which there are *many*, apparently; Pluto writes that this is a defense more than anything, as they do get attacked sometimes)
- deploying the ferry (evidently it's the Market that puts the ferry in the right spot to catch newbies each month, who knew)
- sending telegrams to the lighthouse
- repairing/engineering pretty much any kind of tech you could imagine (largely unlimited portal access can get you a lot of great building materials)

They also have all the equipment you'd need for harnessing nuclear power, like a nuclear reactor and proper storage for radioactive materials, etc.

*To folks at least somewhat versed in quantum physics, the readouts from the portal will suggest that the portal is sort of like trapdoor in the floor of the multiverse. Portals of this nature are *meant* to be stable pathways from point A to point B, but this one is broken beyond repair. It's somehow been rendered unstable, meaning two things: 1) the portal is a one-way door, and things can only come through it *into* this world, not out of it; and 2) the non-Beacon end of the portal is erratic and ever-changing, so much so that it appears to be more of an open tear that just sucks in random bits from other universes.

As for the Helix station's history, it's pretty straightforward! Plans for the station began relatively soon after the incident of the portal's creation in 1969 and it was intended originally for studying the portal. The project was spearheaded by the local university, and construction finished in 1972. Although the station was built to house a much larger crew, the original crew was just barely 50 strong, and those numbers dwindled to about a dozen by 1979, when Dr. Solis and Sheriff Hobaugh fired the warheads at the approaching World Eater. All but three crew members died then, perhaps due to the now-collapsed portion of the station though Pluto writes that no one's really sure what *exactly* happened down there. The three remaining crew members took a submarine to the surface, and the station was left barren until a couple of years later, when the submarines returned with a new 15-person crew made up of folks that came in through the portal and had lanterns. The numbers continued to grow very quickly over the next ~5 years, when the station was packed to capacity, and at that point the now-established Night Market decided they needed to be way choosier about who they brought aboard, as living conditions were abysmal with a crew of almost 100.

The history write-up concludes there, with just a couple extra lines about how it's been business as usual since then, with the Helix crew working to understand the portal and the World Eaters and even their own lanterns. Plus they've had to make a *number* of serious upgrades to the station, and apparently much of their time is spent on repairs and salvage missions.

Unless otherwise noted, all of the information in this plot write-up can be considered common knowledge from this point forward. It's fun to thread out info sharing and puzzle solving, but you don't need to do that with every detail. If it's more fun for you to assume your character gets caught up offscreen so that you can focus on exploring new things and solving new puzzles, go right ahead!

[OOC]
Backtagging:
robin/the keeper is an npc, so yes, i will do my best tag stuff to its conclusion!
Threadjacking: i'm fine with it (esp in network posts), but please check with the other character(s) in the thread first.
Fourthwalling: the keeper is an oc, however, feel free to recognize her pb!
Triggers: nothing. go ham, though please cw tags/threads accordingly for other players that might be viewing the thread.

[IC]
Physical affection:
n/a! the keeper is network-only for the time being, since she's stuck in the lighthouse.
Relationships: she's not really into the long distance thing, sorry fam. also, she's 17... sort of, but for the sake of shipping, yeah, she's 17.
Physical violence: should this ever come up somehow, let's talk! i'm not opposed to it, though.
Killing: same as above!
Mindreading: normally i'd say go off queen, but since the keeper is an npc, this could get tricky. if you want to try to read her mind, let me know and we'll talk!
IC triggers: nothing that will set her off in a serious way!

[OPT-OUT]
the keeper is an npc and a quite prominent one at that, so you're likely going to have to deal with her in some capacity, but if you would prefer to avoid particular subjects while threading with her OR if you don't want here to tag into your character's open posts, please let me know here! comments are screened.

please tell me how i'm doing! the lighthouse keeper/robin is an oc, yes, but more importantly, she's an npc. if you have comments/concerns/suggestions for how i'm fulfilling that npc role, i'd love to hear them. comments are screened, anon is enabled, and ip logging is turned off.

however! if you have feedback beyond my personal performance with winters, please direct your comment to the mod contact page.

The Night Market is a faction of researchers living in the Helix research station beneath the waves of Lake Red Jacket. They come up once every other month to spend a weekend in the harbor, trading with the residents of Beacon.

The Market is made up of various shopkeeper NPCs. The ringleader is Pluto, who can be found during every Night Market visit. The rest of the shopkeepers are a rotating cast of NPCs, played by the game mods (of all levels!) and... you, dear player!

Players who make double AC with 20+ comments for the month will be entered into a RNG pool for a shot at playing an NPC shopkeeper for the next Night Market visit! The Night Market comes around on the second weekend of every other month, so, for example, the activity checks in October and November will be used to determine the NPCs for a Night Market visit in December. One player will be RNG'd from each month, giving us two players NPCing during each Night Market visit, alongside Pluto and our mods' rotating shopkeepers.

So! If you're interested in playing a shopkeeper for the Night Market, be sure to shoot for double AC! Here's all the other stuff to keep in mind:

  • Players chosen to NPC will be ineligible for future drawings. We want to spread the wealth!

  • If you need to back out from NPCing, we ask that you give us at least 4 days notice before the next Night Market visit. This is to give us time to find and orient an alternate, and for that alternate to design their NPC. If you're able to let us know with 4 days notice, you'll be eligible for future NPC drawings.

  • NPC players will be allowed to use NPC threads for AC. Let's say you play Mario, and you clock in enough NPC comments to make AC with them. You can sub in your NPC for Mario if you like, using your NPC's threads for Mario's AC. If you just play Mario, great! We'll still ask that you do the typical summary write-up and such, but Mario's comments are set thanks to your NPC. If you also play Pacman, however, you'll still need to make normal AC with him.

  • As a shopkeeper, you'll get to choose: the character you'll play, the goods/services they'll sell, the prices/currency they'll accept, and their role within the Night Market faction. You'll work with the mods to lightly AU a character into this group. Our goal here is to give you as much creative control as possible, but we're happy to help brainstorm, too! Don't feel like you have to come into this with a super detailed plan.

  • As a shopkeeper, you'll be responsible for: threading with characters that tag into your toplevel and managing an OOC "shop" thread like these. Pretty straightforward!

  • Shopkeepers are not responsible for plot stuff. All plot-related stuff should be rerouted to one of the mod NPCs (Pluto's your best bet as the perma NPC, but any others are fine!), and we'll post a reminder during each visit that our player shopkeepers aren't the folks to go to with plotty topics.

  • On that note, players chosen to NPC will not get secret plot knowledge! We won't spoil the mysteries for you, don't worry. We'll give you what you need to play your NPC, and if you like, we'll give you a few small, noncritical pieces of information to disperse at your character's leisure. These info nuggets will be things like an anecdote from a past reset or knowledge of life in the Helix station, things of that nature. Neat facts!

  • You can choose almost any character to play as an NPC. We'll get to character limitations in a minute, but even our standard "appable character" rules don't necessarily apply. Fandom OCs, characters without enough canon, AU'd characters... It's a one-off NPC, so anything that doesn't break the game is probably fine with us. We do reserve the right to ask you to choose another character, but if you're looking for an excuse to dust off that old journal for a character you can't play anywhere, run 'em by us!

  • Your chosen NPC cannot be notable CR for another character already in game. This is to preserve the status quo of the game; we don't want another player's Mario having an existential crisis over Princess Peach, the Night Market NPC. However, Waluigi the Night Market NPC would be fine, since Mario knows that dude, but mostly in passing. (i assume? apologies if i'm screwing up deep mario lore. we'd research this in a real world scenario, for the record.) If we're at all iffy on the closeness of the CR, we'll err on the side of caution and ask you to pick another character.

  • Your chosen NPC must have a reason to be part of the Night Market. The Market vets their members carefully, choosing characters that can contribute something worthwhile to their cause... their cause being to fix the world and fight off the World Eaters. This is a fairly broad definition, but we purposely want to keep it flexible to accommodate a lot of different character types. This is something we can work together on as you're designing your NPC, but feel free to ask us questions in advance!

  • Anyone can NPC with us! Are you capable of making double AC to enter the RNG pool? Great! That's the only requirement. It doesn't matter how long you've been in the game, how familiar you are with the game's lore and plot, what kind of tagger you are, etc. This is a fun, bonus thing. It's entirely self indulgent. Lean in.

If you have any questions about playing a Night Market NPC, you can PM the mod account ([personal profile] inthenightmods) or comment directly to this page!

I did it. It worked! I caՁҮ׺չӨՊԀѸטҏӰٟрվՆ؈фs real life right now, I feel like I'm dreaming. Or losing my mind. Maybe boбԡѾԱԺҦٮя׌ϻٕԋԝӆֽքo one's going to believe me, so it might as well be both. Every time I try to take my research public, they tell me it's all still theoretical, that thѢְԦ's no way I'm getting the؀Ϣ results without faking it. Well guess what, asӒзϬַЮЈҕe to do it again, and I have to get proof this time. But I'll جէԄ՝Ϗٶٲ׶ϭЎӅ to wait. The thing sucks up so much power someone's go٣ٹ֚ to notice if I use it too often.

It's real, I'm not crazy. YѾѐ֞Ԏ֒ؓ٣ٹ֚׊ґЗԩҍ՜؉՝ say, it's not proven until you can replicate it. Well, I just replicated it!
The first time I got scared and shut it down without even rϿزЖֹ؍ԖאϜҽОՔك׊ӀԸ؀չЍ֒ЊЉ׽נؚut this time, it was inside a house. A house. There are people over there! It looked so normal, so muңχגП֡џϺЇգӜӧϨӭҮԝջԗքяشthing you'd see on this side that I didn't think it had worked at first, but the pictures on the wall, the shape of the chairs—there's no mistaking it. It wasn't here.
I didn't want to ruin anything so I j׽נؚٮ֢ԼӿѮt grabbed the nearest thing I saw and stepped back. Some kind of food, I think? I haven't opened the bag. I'm too afraid, and I'm too excited. I have to take this to the university. There's just so many implications! My hջԗքяشѩԻЬought I'd get this far.

In September's intro log, Robin hooked everyone up with ocarinas (that can now be found in the general store!) and basic instructions for a handful of "phrases" in forest spirit language, which is based on musical notes. From this point forward, these instructions will automatically appear on every tablet in the form of a simple app.

The app contains playing instructions and example audio files for the following messages:

- A friendly greeting!
- An assurance that equates to "I come in peace".
- A short melody that translates roughly to polite terms like please, thank you, and you're welcome.
- A shrill note that asks for help.
- The rough equivalent to "Danger! Run and hide!"
- The rough equivalent to "I'm lost" or "Need directions"
- The rough equivalent to "Looking for water" or "Thirsty"
- The rough equivalent to "Looking for food" or "Hungry"
- The rough equivalent to "Sympathy" or "I'm sorry"
- The rough equivalent to "Teach me"
