happy 2014, too
1 January 2014 06:07 pmIf I make it through June, I think I'm going to take a year out.
I've been telling people this for a little while, but a large part of that was because saying "gap year" is a decent way to head off more questions along the lines of "ooh what do you want to do". I don't know that, at least not yet. (It's not that I haven't thought about it, it's that I seriously don't know.) I'm starting to think I mean it, though. It's been a bit rough lately, and I'm luckier than a lot of people in that I can still have the rent trickling in throughout next year if I find somewhere local to work part-time and ease into this shit.
... It might just be me retroactively justifying why I've missed all the deadlines for stuff this year, but eh, can't do much about that now.

Omelette chronicles, part 4
6 October 2013 12:18 pmThe other day: Other super basic things that I forgot / didn't care about enough to write about - overly greasy fried rice and rubbery tasteless stirfries are the main ones.
Today: Hoping to prove to myself that inept cooking adventures didn't have to grind to a halt just because it's now term time, I attempted motherfucking tamagoyaki. (Oh god, this recipe blog speaks to me!) It turned out a slightly more photogenic roll shape than any of my omelettes to date, which is to say not very, although it was a fantastic sculpture of a wrinkly yellowish-brown slug before I cut it up. It was also amazing! \o/ It actually tasted right! (I think I used a bit less sugar than a tablespoon since I don't have that much of a sweet tooth, but it was there, and oh wow. ♥) I gotta do this again sometime!
Next: Maybe adding soy sauce to my next omelette just to see what happens, but I also want to give stirfrying another go. I at least didn't get food poisoning last time, so I think I know roughly what I'm doing, and I can blame the tastelessness at least partly on the cheap supermarket stirfry sauce I had, I think. When I remember, I'm going to look for some chicken stock and garlic, possibly some ginger - see if that helps anything.

Omelette (?) chronicles, part 3
23 August 2013 08:17 pmThe other day: A few more omelettes, mostly involving mushrooms and tomatoes. I guess so far I haven't really made anything photogenic enough to be identified as an omelette by anyone else (scrambled eggs, maybe), but I also figured I was getting pretty comfortable with these things, so -
Today: Egg fried rice! Which come to think I'm not sure is actually a step up, but the wok is hotter so what the heck, it counts. Cooked rice in the morning, put it in the fridge till evening, threw it in the pan (making a slight mess, but only on the worktop, which I'm going to claim as a success for baby's first time frying anything), poured beaten eggs and half a leftover kipper on top and that was it. Actually I don't know if it might have tasted better without the kipper, but I needed to use that up somehow; it was pretty great, anyway!
Next: ...Egg fried rice with something, maybe? Vegetables, at least. The comfort food version would be egg fried rice with peas, but I wonder.

Omelette chronicles, part 2
24 July 2013 01:16 pmThe other day: 3 eggs, no water, corned beef, tomatoes, mushrooms, a handful of cheddar, too much salt, a big load of what the bottle assures me are "mixed herbs". Apart from being a bit too salty and the cheese not really doing anything (also probably 3 eggs was too much, it ended up mostly cooking at the bottom of the pan instead of at the sides), this was A+! Possibly the corned beef is what's pushing it over? Maybe.
Next: I've actually got an onion in the fridge I don't remember picking up that looks more or less fine to me, so maybe I should look up stuff that would actually use it before it stops doing so. But I don't know what any more specifically than "stuff", so that's an issue. :|a

Omelette chronicles! (part 1?)
13 July 2013 01:23 pmBecause I'm making progress on something this summer already, dangit!
The other day:
- First attempt! 2 eggs, no water, corned beef, tomatoes. Too much salt. :(
- 2 eggs, no water, mushrooms, tomatoes, garlic salt. Not enough salt. Also, put the mushrooms in after the egg and they didn't really cook.
- 3 eggs, no water, corned beef, tomatoes, mushrooms, basil and garlic salt. Still probably not enough salt, because the egg didn't taste of much? But put the mushrooms in first after the oil heated up and they came out fine.
Today:
- 2 eggs, no water, corned beef, tomatoes, mushrooms, garlic salt and salt, and some elderly spinach that I needed to use up. Way too much oil. If it covers the whole base of the pan, something is wrong. D< Apart from that, just fine.
Next:
- IDK... I have a bit of bacon in the fridge, and I am terribly wary of frying it because flames death destruction cardiac arrest etc, but either that or I guess I can stick it in the oven first then cut it up and throw it in.
- Or, if I'm too timid, ham and cheese. (Bits of kipper?...)
- Or stuff that isn't omelettes, because sheesh. Not sure what, though.

26 May 2013 12:01 amAs of just about 24 hours ago, I am no longer an angsty teen!
This year was low key. I would have spent it on my own in my pyjamas eating cookie rolls, but Mum is stopping over for a week because kid brother and stepdad are on holiday and she's lonely. (That's not what she says, but it's pretty friggin' obvious.) I had... mixed feelings about this yesterday, particularly because I hadn't expected her until today because of a misunderstanding - but no, my birthday turned out nice. For one thing, the sun came out! After the last fortnight or so, that was a fucking miracle!
It meant we could go for a wander around town and have a relaxed kid brotherless lunch at a Chinese place we hadn't been to before and that I didn't have to pay for, which was A+. Then we did grocery shopping because I figured we might as well, and then I pretty much came back here to sit on my ass playing Pokémon Mystery Dungeon... and to finally get around to watching Les Mis (on DVD) with Mum like we'd been intending when it was still in cinemas, which she ended up adoring. (I cried again.)
That was the entire day. I might be deluding myself, but just for one day, for the first time in a while, I felt like I had my whole life ahead of me. I'm not complaining. I've had much worse!

belated resolutions for 2013
4 January 2013 12:32 pm- When my alarm goes off, before hitting snooze for an extra half an hour and napping some more, get out of bed, pull some socks on and stay out for five minutes. It's permissible to just take them straight off and crawl back in after that, but let's be real, it's less likely. And that's the point. (It's also okay not to get up right away, especially on weekends; the important thing is getting up before going back to sleep.
- Write or draw one new thing a month, at least - not a margin doodle or something that crops up in RP, but something I sit down with a bit of free time and actively intend to do. Quality doesn't matter. Inspiration doesn't matter. In the case of writing, length doesn't matter; a dumbshit two-line poem counts. But do it, and have it public somewhere (if only nominally, like on here).
- On a day I get an assignment, look at it properly. Skimming doesn't count; I'm talking sitting down with it and a blank sheet of paper and looking through all of it. After that, if I don't feel up to doing more than just sticking my name at the top of the page and putting it aside, I can do that guilt-free.
- Similarly, on a day I hear about a test, get the appropriate notes out. I don't have to read them right away.
- When I don't get something, ask. When I need help, say so. In this environment, at this time, the worst that can happen is I'll be ignored - and if that happens, it's those fuckers, not me. They're the ones missing out on an opportunity to consolidate their knowledge, or even just being paid for this shit.
- Keep on keeping on! There'll be a way.
(Not on here: starting to actually use a personal journal again. Because Plurk.)

Honorifics used in Digimon
3 January 2013 07:58 pm(Good evening, Dreamwidth! Yanking things off my LJ individually rather than doing a proper import, because all of the rest needs to rot. ;D I'd apologise for the spam, but nobody's here. Nobody's left back there, either. I don't think it makes much difference.

( Under here! )
I realise nobody actually reads this journal and so any kind of disclaimer is pointless, but feel free to refer back to this, and link if you find it helpful. I mainly kept the text file around for RPing purposes. Obviously it's useless if you prefer the dub or if you don't like to add honorifics when writing in English - but all of these terms of address do have solid canon evidence, whatever that means to you.
Oh, and please feel free to nudge me if you know that something is wrong or missing, too. You'd be helping out the fandom! Sort of. ♥
