Artist Statement

Through this semester I have learned a lot. I’ve studied the camera a lot more and learned all the cool tricks and stuff it can do. I feel like I have been most successful with blending picture together to make them look like that’s how they were taken. I have struggled with creativity and making things look surreal, I only vision things in reality not surreality. In the future I could improve on seeing things in a different were than they have been displayed. My favorite thing that I have learned in class is the ISO and how it affects the light I love messing with that.
The project that connected to my life the most was the quilt project it was also the most meaningful. I feel I got to put a lot of myself into it, It expressed who I was, and sort of how I grew up and the way I saw things from the past to the future. The artists I had most related to was Andy Warhol because he’s funky and spunky and I like him the most, his work is exciting to look at and just simple.
I have seen growth and improvement in myself mostly in taking better pictures I actually think about the background, and where most of the light is, before I would just snap whatever looked nice to me, now more though goes in to my picture taking.

Blowout & Panning

Image
Image
I created the blowout affect by making the ISO 1300.I think it was the best way to create a blowout picture because it makes the picture very bright. Another way to create a blowout affect is by brightening the picture.
panning is when anything that is moving becomes blurry expect for the object that is standing still. I think i did a good job. I had my camera setting on the 2 second timer. what makes panning difficult for this picture was trying not to cover my stand still object with a running person and to makes it look even and neat.

Shutter Speed

Image
Image
Image
Shutter speed is how long the light gets to come into the picture. The longer its open the more the light comes in. We used our cell phones as the light. And also a little lamp to turn off and on. The camera was set to 15 sec. shutter speed. And the ISO was at 200, This was really fun to do. I would choose changing shutter speed over ISO or Aperture because it lets the light come in, and show. My favorite picture is the 2nd one because it came out clearer, and it looks crazay!

Aperture

Image
Image

Aperture is your control of how much light comes in the picture like the pupil of your eyes you can make it small amount of light or a large amount. For the first picture the aperture would b e large and for the second picture it would be a small amount of aperture because theres not a big hole of light.

ISO

Image
(auto flash)
Image
(5000)
Image
(800)
Image
(400)
Image
(50)
ISO is the measure of a photographic film's sensitivity to light, you use it when you want to capture light without useing the flash it shows the light more. When i used the flash it made the x-mas lights not really show when i used the ISO the lights were the main effect so you can capture them more. I would choose to use ISO when its dark, and i want to caoture lights around a house or the city. You have to be careful when using ISO though because you could make the picture to dark, and the light be the only thing that would show.

Flash

Image

Pros- if your in the dark and your background is bright it will help show yourself by using flash
Cons- red eye, reflections of flash

flash is a good idea if your outside and its really bright in your in the shade
flash is not a good idea when there are a bunch of mirrors or windows around

Its better not to use the flash here in this picture because if you were to use the flash it would be all dark and you wouldnt be able to see anything without using it, you can see all the lights and the beauty in the lights all over.

Metering

Image
Image
To me metering picks up the color that is in the little box and makes it the main point of color like the blue screen shows because it metered the blue, and the skin color showed because it metered the skin color

Surrealism: "carrot ghost"

Image

Interpret:
In this dream the water going around myself is showing drowning which means to be overstressed with thing in life at the moment. Also me being a ghost in the dream after dyeing from drowning supposedly means aspects of myself that I fear, like a painful memory or guilt. Also most of my dreams take place in a night time setting which they say means ignorance, evil or the despair of the dark night of the soul.

Surreal Practice Tutorials

Image
Image
To make this desert look "realistic" we used different color gradients and blended the images and clouds and used shadows and darkening in certain areas to have a real effect. These tutorials will help me when we do our surreal photo because by knowing to put shadows and everything it will look better than just pasteing pictures on to pictures, by adding shadows and changing gradients it helps it pop and doesnt just look like random stuff.

ART SHOW "simplicity"

Image

The artwork I created was a simple flower in the sky. I was trying to accomplish a simplistic flower with a simple background. To me this picture feels very peaceful and easy to look at. It was my most favorite picture that i took.
I feel that everythings is placed right with the sky and flower to the side. It helps draw your eyes exactly to the flower, and show its beauty. You recognize more of the detailing when you just have one emphasis.

Senior Graduation

Image The strength of my design would be the word graduation. i could have filled up the space a lot more to make it look not so empty but i also like how its simple. The pegasus was really hard to work with because i took the picture off mallorys sweater and had to crop it and mess with the levels alot for it to look normal. The most important part i think would be the word graduation and 2010.

Senior Invitation

Image The strength of my design to others i feel is pretty good mine looks neat and has everything that is required, and everything is spelt correctly. To have it better i think that the frame surrounding the "senior portfolio show" could have been less girly, but that frame is what i struggled with the most making it look faded and clearing it out, i think i did better on this program compared to the graduation program because its more fun and interesting to look at.

Personal Quilt

MY QUILTImageOUTSIDE Image

PAST

ImageFUTURE

Image INSIDE
Image
My ideas in my quilts all came from either me or my friends. I am happy with they way they all turned out. My least favorite quilt would be my outside me, because i rushed on it and think that it could have been better represented with other symbols and stuff. I dont feel it showed me very well. My favortie square is my inside me, because i took a lot of time with it and i think i did a really good job showing what i felt was inside me. i struggled mostly with using paintbrushes and making certain pictures stick out on all those layers. All of my quilts i had used purple, and some accents of blue so that they could tie together in a way. Some symbols i expressed were the fish in the outside me because i am a pisces, and baby feet in my future, and also wedding bells, and the medical symbol showing thats what i want my career to be. I think this was a fun project there are some things i would probably change like my outside quilt and stuff
but most of the stuff i wouldve kept the same.

Artist Statement

In this portfolio you will find all of the work I have created so far this year in my Digital Photography class. I feel in this portfolio I worked very hard, although there are some projects I wish I could have done better.
Over the course of this semester I have learned so much I learned about layering photos, writing text in different ways, fading photos, macro, shadowing, how to take a good photograph in the light, angling. And a lot more camera stuff and Photoshop stuff.
I think personally that I was most successfully with layering photographs because I like to mess with the opacity and the different layers you could do. It came really easy to me, and I use it in every photograph almost.
I struggled most with downloading brushes or stamps from the internet I never really got how to do it, and how to bring it onto Photoshop, that way I stay away from that and mainly used what the Photoshop program provided me with. I still don’t really know how to use them.
In the future I could improve on organizing my layers better when having a lot of layers on one photo. I was sloppy in that, and that’s why my photos got messed up, and it became a lot more difficult to keep up when that would happen. To me I have seen the most improvement in working with layers and blurring out things that don’t look nice in the picture, because at the beginning of the year I never cared about all the small details, but now I'm all about erasing things that I don’t like, or hiding them
This class is a lot of fun for me, I love taking pictures of objects and creating something more of them. I will say though that just missing one day of class sets me back a lot because I never realized all the little details we would learn in just one hour that would take me forever to learn by myself.

Personal Words

Image The lyrics i chose for this project is foolish by Ashanti.
"See my days are cold without you But I'm hurtin while im with you And though my heart can't take no more I keep on running back to you Baby I don't know why ya treatin me so bad You said you love me, no one above me And I was all you had And though my heart is eating for ya I can't stop crying I don't know how I allow you to treat me this way and still i stayBaby I don't know why ya wanna do me wrong See when I'm home, I'm all alone And you are always gone And boy, you kno I really love you I can't deny I can't see how you could bring me to so many tears after all these years See, when I get the strength to leave You always tell me that you need me And I'm weak cause I believe you And I'm mad because I love you So I stop and think that maybe You can learn to appreciate me Then it all remains the same that You ain't never gonna change."
I chose these words because i love this song and always sing it. I think any girl can relate to it too. And it makes me feel better i dont know why. I just really like the song. To me they mean a girls independance from a man that shes strong and dont need him, but also hurt. So it fits the average teenage girl who has ever been like heartbroken.

Social issue: "image"

Image
  • In this picture there is all black and white with a flower standing out in color. There are two words that say looks within that are written in bright red with a black square behind them. The color of the flower is not that bold just suttle, to just bring it out a little.
  • My social issue has to do with people and how they may not be the most prettiest in the world, but if they let there inside show they are really beautiful. like once you get to know someone they become more prettier. It affects me because i am a person to judge on appearance like most people do even though its not a good thing, and some people have surprised me with how beautiful there true personality is and how good intentions they carry.

scary effects

Image
Image My favorite is the vampire because it was funner to create.
i learned a bunch of new tools like the glass tools and how to make the eraser different shapes
it was difficult because all the layers would get confusing
i think i did well on the alien eyes
in real life people probably use these for magazines scary movies and like book titles

Critique: Robert & Shana ParkeHarrison

Image In the picture I have chosen a man who is wearing a black suit which he is looking determined because he is building a bridge/dock of wooden panels. But the thing that is so different about this photo is he is building this on a lake just full of water. There are ripples in the water from him hammering on the wood panels. The picture is in black and white.
It’s kind of a leading lines picture because the only thing in the picture is the man with the part of the bridge he has already built and the water with a blank grey sky. The bridge sort of looks unsteady. It seems as if he might be trying to get out of the place that he is at. Trying to escape. It seems impossible what the man is trying to do. He seems desperate to leave, to build a bridge like his.
He is the main emphasis because he’s right in the middle and wearing black which is a contract compared to the lighter grey tones in the lake and sky. I like this picture I think it just stands out and is very different. The thing they could have done different is maybe give him a destination that his bridge leads to.

Image

my favorite trick we have learned over the past few days is how to change eyecolor i think its so much fun how different it makes the picture look.
the trick i would like to explore a bit more with would be the glow in pictures and filtering.
i loved putting layer masks over my pictures to add colors like what i did with cheyannes pic. with the rainbow and blur it looks eye catching.

Portraits

Image
Image

Image

Image

The portrait i think was most successful was the costume one because to me it looks so artistic. And i got good reviews.
To create a more artisitc photo i tried to use the lighting affect because to me thats most dramatic.
Cheyanne used a pretty long black dress as her costume. I like the way it turned out becaused it just looks so different and you dont see that everyday.
My surprise photo is different because i used the sun alot and i didnt really use it in any of the other pictures.

Compositional Trick #9 contact sheet

Image
My favorite trick was the frameing one, because i think it looks really artistic. I think i will use light in my everyday photos because it makes the picture just that much more better. The trick most difficult for me was the extreme angles because i feel like i couldnt get low enough and it was my least favorite.

Compositional Trick #8 Fill in Flash

Image
Image

Image

Image The flash on the cameras helped alot with making the shadows over our faces become more clear. It helped alot in the really bright sunlight to use a flash. There are before pictures that are just to dark and you cant see them well, but the after ones with flash helped alot.

Compositional Trick #7 Drawing with Light

Image This lighting sets my picture apart from others because it looks like theres emotion, and a mood within the picture. When i look at this picture i think the mood is like the model is thinking about something.

Compositional Trick #6 Framing

Image
Image These shots are showing frames around your emphasis. Framing helps bring out the emphasis, and leads you to it easily. Makes your eyes go straight to the person.

Compositional Trick #5 Extreme Angles

Image
Image These pictures are extreme angles, one is shot from below, and one up high. They help us notice the world from a different angle. Like it would be like to be a bug looking up at a giant, or a bird looking down at little people.

Compositional Trick #4 Simplicity

Image
Image

Using simplicity helps you define your object, taking out all the backround images and focusing just on your object and a simple back drop. When you make just one thing stand out alot, it looks really artistic and neat.
