What have I been up to lately? Mostly staying put and avoiding the cold, the snow and the ice. All the sanders are not helping much with the sidewalks. Maybe sand gets tracked up on the sidewalk at intersections, but unless you are near a school (lots of foot traffic there) that's not terribly helpful.

So I have been watching some tv recently. The two things I've been following are Fallout and Severance. I kinda find Fallout hard to watch.Every time a zombie shows up I find my eyes sliding away from the tv. Why do they all have the same look - even the children playing zombies look the same as the two hundred year old ones. Were they also zombiefied at the same time only they some were actual children? I gather the show is based on a video game but its not like I've encountered (m)any video games. I probably should start again and see if I pick up more details.

But honestly that's mostly curiousity and what I'm really invested in is Severance. It's giving me strong Lost vibes. That's how long it has been since I fell this deeply into caring about the world building and characters of a show. And don't tell me how Lost fell down at the end, I don't agree.) Lost made me happy and sad and it made me feel. Severance is hitting all three points beauifully. I'm so eager to see what happens next.Anyone else getting Lost vibes from Severence?

I finally heard a piece of music, I've heard of way back, way, way back. I think it dates back to my childhood so maybe I overheard a friend's older sister talking about it. But yesterday was the first time I ever heard Gadda da Vida. Loved it, the wait was worth it. Here is a link to the full version, just in case:

ETA: I realize they are ghouls not zombies. Possibly stringing thoughts together at that time is not a good idea. :)

Dine and Killerweasel, I received your cards today, thank you both very much.Oddly the one from KW had been opened. There was no notation to indicte when or where or why. As I recall when I used to buy off ebay any parcel coming from the states was stamped to indicate it was opened at the border. Maybe the pretty ribbon that had a thin strip of wire triggered a beep from something. Who knows? In any event, alls well, but I just found it a bit strange.
This could be old news already. But I just stumbled across the trailer for The Old Guard 2, this afternoon. I'm not optimistic that it will be as good as the first one, but I remain hopeful. Ok, only two days ago, so not ancient news, but me stumbling over it was a happy accident. I hope their promotion is going to be a little more enthused than that.

The Old Guard 2 will be on Netflix July 2. (imagine a Snoopy happy dance here.)

I have a second cat. Did I mention sthis already? She is from the same rescue that Molly came from. Her owner has health issues and is going from the hospital into a seniors retirement home. She could take a cat, but Jill has her own problems, and is already 12 years old so that make her a bit challenging. But mostly she is a sweetheart. When you talk to her she walks over and looks right at you until she gets petted. Clearly she got talked to a lot and there may have been food rewards for her behaviour because she was very well fed when she arrived. She has lost 1 pound so far and i'm hoping this is a beginning trend for her. She's already more active and improving on grooming herself. We've switched her to a gastro-intestinal food which has drastically limited her destruction of my rugs. She still throws up occasionally, so there may be another problem.(I know, cats throw up but this is not hairball related. Trust me, we had three Persians, I know about hairballs.)
Anyway, her main joy is laying her her bed near a heat source. She is very vocal at meal time. Like I'm starving her and she wants to make sure I know it. And she loves to boss Molly around with just a look. Which i appreciate as there was a lot of hissing and noisy carrying on when she first arrived. But that isn't even a once a day thing now, so i'm hoping they will learn to like each other eventually. Getting along wasn't an issue when we had five cats, but they were all introduced as kittens to the adult cats in the household. That is likely the problem between Jill and Molly.

Today I got outside minus boots, hat or gloves. There was a bitter cold wind so i stuck with my winter jacket, D had a pair of mini-gloves in my pocket. I was glad of both, while I was outside. Spring is not far off, and 90 % of the white stuff is gone. Hurrah! It was like a day in paradise, only colder than you'd hoped for.

i didn't mention, but I finally watched all of SPN, and the day I finished the platform I was watching it on, stopped running the show. So my plan to re-watch some episodes from the final season is postponed until it shows up again. I want to see the one with Christian Kane again because I honestly felt like I was hallucinating a fic I might have read. It was the oddest feeling to see what felt like fanfic show up on my TV. It was like the ultimate act of pandering to a section of fandom. Weird. Really weird.

I can watch movies! I've pretty much stopped watching them until recently. I feel like 40 min. is all I have to spend on viewing something. But at a buck each at my thrift store, it doesn't feel like money wasted if I can't. Some movies, I just didn't want to watch but I don't feel bad if i stop, and put it in the donate box. Donations go to any store that is taking donations the day we want to drop them off. But not the store I shop at. I don't want to buy stuff twice. :)

Speaking of thrifting, thrift stores are havens for new mugs that seem to have never been used. Today I got the cutest cat mug it says An Ordinary Cat can make Life Extraordinary. This is my favourite so far, including the Tom Thomson's I got the other day, and maybe even, the Dr Who disappearing Tardis Mug I got a while back. Well, not more than the Tardis mug, but what can compete with that?

You dont know what you're going to find in a thrift store. The other day while wandering at the back I spotted the world's largest coffee table or maybe it was a dining table for those who prefer not to need chairs while they eat. Honestly, it was big enough for that. Enormous. And up the next aisle were concrete side tables with glass tops set into them. i couldn't move them or even cause them to rock with a gentle push. Who bought things like that? Where did they put them?
Inquiring minds, and all that.

my place is almost entirely decorated with thrift store finds. Brand new unused towels, sheet sets and curtains all have been found, still with crisp labels. Couch cushions, that seem brand new and unused. Clothing still with the store labels attached (today's find was a NWT Torrid shirt). I'm not terribly fussy, things don't have to be perfect, but they have to pass a sniff test. Even books in used book stores. I'm the one who has a book open up near my face sniffing to see what there is to be smelled. Books that don't pass the basement smell stay, and anything fabric with a scent that transfers to things around it stays. I have learned to be cautious sniffing purses. Some smell like their owner used to spray the bag every time she used her perfume. And use it often she did! Less perfume is more, I say. Be kind to those around you.{personal opinion, not meant to offend)

Hey, not everyone wants to hear about buying stuff. I wont be offended if you say, enough with the thrift store finds. It's just something I'm enjoying right now.

Yesterday it snowed again.FML,will it ever end? The answer is yes, but i'm anxious that I may have to adjust my self-chosen Final Possible Snow Date past April 15th. Don't make me do it, please. To whatever is listening. please don't. So in an effort to adjust i watched a you-tube video on how to clean rugs of any size in the snow. I have three area rugs plus some floor mats which would benefit, but dragging them upstairs and outside seems a lot of work.

I"m thinking very seriously of doing some travelling.Switzerland is interesting because that seems to be the point of origin (THurgau) for my family line. Also Heidi! And Edelweiss, Plus the concept of NEUTRALITY, and the mix with The Swiss Guard who were pretty bad ass. Also I want to go to Montreux which if you know me, you know why, and yes you're right.

im also intrigued by the Scandinavian countries. I know, its weird for all my whinging, those are the places I'd like to visit. Not during their snow seasons, but during their less frosty times of the year. Has anyone been to either or both? Can you give me some pros and cons? (If you have time, thanks so much.)

It looks to be a lovely sunny day so i should go do what needs doing before that changes. happy Friday, everyone! This is the weekend, I'm going to learn how to use my kindle. Wish me luck, please & thanks!
I'm currently fostering a cat from the woman who allowed me to adopt Molly. This one is around twelve or thirteen. She and her brother were in a long-term foster situation for the last five years. The male cat recently died and the foster mom is elderly and having health issues. She is a tuxedo cat and her name is Jill. She's a super affectionate cat who is determined to groom the people in her life. Molly is not thrilled with sharing her space with another cat. They haven't resorted to fighting but there is frequent hissing and growling from them both. They each have their own eating area, beds, litter boxes and cat trees. (I have yet to see Jill anywhere near her tree, but she is a senior lady.)This morning they were each laying on the a step napping and there was no noise from either. That's as close as they have gotten yet, so I'm hopeful they will get used to each other in time and stop being so vocal. Fingers crossed!

This is what i've been referring to as the Canadian Trilogy. They all have one thing in common that I'm aware of. (The industry here is pretty small so there may well be things in common between them that i'm unaware of.) I've seem all of these movies and enjoyed each one.
Some Canadian movies I'd like to see are also The Sweet Hereafter, and maybe Cube and Going Down the Road as well as Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner. I've never seen Away from her Women Talking or The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz, but I probably should.
While I'm talking about the Canadian entertainment industry, I want to mention my cousin (first, once removed) Henry passed away in Dec 2024. Henry was just as proud of being the in print Shoppers' Santa as he was of his television and movie appearances. He was even prouder of successfully raising a large clutch of humans who are raising their own families. Henry's children, and their spouses. all adore their "Papa Santa", and I can't think of a better sign of success.
Yesterday, I had what I call a successful thrifting day. I found several box sets of tv shows, including season one of Medium. Now that was a score. I've never found any season of Medium while thrifting. (Apparently, thrifint is not a verb or even a word, according to my computer.) I also picked up s1 and s2 of The Wire and also The Newsroom and Numbers. That was 7 box sets for $35, which I think was a good deal. Hopefully, I'LL be able to see the remaining seasons of the shows I enjoy thru streaming.
There are so many shows to watch that I havent seen, plus all the ones I want to rewatch. It feels like I'm always running behind. I need to find a way to watch shows while I'm out walking.

Besides TV shows. books, movies and vintage items, I'm haunting my local thrift store looking for a folding, wood, three section clothes drying rack like my mom had. It dates from the 1930s which fits, mom was raising her first family in the early fourties.(I"ve seen them called Victorian antiques and maybe they date back that far,but i'm not after a delicate antique. I want the drying rack that Mom had throughout my childhood and used until she passed. The one we hung our mittens and snow covered or rain soaked clothing on to dry out. Ten years later, dad had an auction and sold everything (including my books and the family christmas ornaments), then he sold the house. For years we'd say to each other, "What happened to...?" knowing the answer. I saved mom's triple plate sterling flatware for myself and her little antique dolls for my sister by nabbing them. There was no point in asking for anything, dad needed the money. He was going to be on a "fixed income". He had an amazing pension when he retired, he used to brag that he made more money from it then he did when he worked. And in the next breathe he would be moaning about his "fixed income".
I spent New Years Eve watching a bit of television and then catching up on Youtube. To my dismay, I saw that Hawk vs Wolf had a Last Episode! title on the thumbnail. I hope that was just to grab attention, I didn't hear anything about it during my viewing. But. I was so delighted I might have been neglecting/ignoring anything that didn't feed my joy. Because if it was the last episode, that was the also last remaining podcast on skateboarding I've followed. But. There is always a "but". The guests were Rodney Mullen and Andy Anderson. What a pleasure to get to see them interacting at last. Andy may well be the last freestyle skater and Rodney was among the few who slide from the 80s into present day as a representative of his style and his era.
Rodney clued us all in that he had been in London doing one of his talks at the Royal Institution. I had to google what the Royal Institution is because it seemed to be missing something in its name. Like the Royal Institution of what? It's a charity to connect people with the world of science.

I'm saving that one for later today. I love Rodney's talks. The audience is there for him completely. He doesn't have to win them over, though I'm sure he could if he had to.

Today I stumbled into an interview with Alan Parsons which slammed me right back to the eighties. Eye in the Sky was a much loved album at the time, as was Turn of a Friendly Card. "Time keeps flowing like a river to the sea", and here we are. 2025.Wow! I honestly thought I'd be dead by now. I followed the news then much more closely than i do now, I read a lot of post apocalytic novels and I wouldn't have been at all surprised. It's more of a surprise that the world is still rolling along as it is. Not a bad thing, it's a pleasant moment of startlement to realize human-kind remains.

Wishing everyone a healthy, happy and prosperous 2025!

Pet Update: I have a new cat. She was part of a resuce from a hoarding situation. She arrived at the rescue with a litter of kittens, so there was a bit of a wait for the kittens to mature enough to be okay without their mom. The vet said this was not her first litter aand she appeared to be under two years old. Poor girl. She was spayed and her shots were brought up to date. She is a tortie, tall and long legged and slender. Her name is Molly. I haven't had a cat like her before. The closest would have been Zane who had a similar build, but he was from a litter of barn kittens dropped at a vets. I took him home and introduced him to Max. Max promptly bowled him over and gave him a bath and raised him up like he'd been raising kittens for years. Both boys got along with all the cats at home. We had as many as five at one point, and Nook who was an akita/lab mix. I highly recomment this mix - super smart, goodnatured and independent. He was protective and this showed when strange men came in the house wearing ballcaps. he would growl until the hat came off and then he was fine.If someone he knew came in the house. he would wag his tail until we noticed and realized what was happening. When he passed of old age at 14, we got Reba who was a black lab mix and a real sweetheart.

"So, you've never heard of Ren?" I hear this a lot recently as my current obsession is an independent Welsh musician. That question gets asked a lot on reactor channels.(I have simply slid my obsession for reaction channels on Youtube to those reacting to all things Ren and "Ren, not Ren". About a year ago, he got a lot of attention for his vid "Hi Ren", https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_nc1IVoMxc As of today there have been 39 million views and Ren has 1.67 subscribbers on Youtube alone. I understand he posts to other platforms as well.

He writes original material and sings covers as well. So far, I've only had a distinct lack of interest to one song of his that I've heard.Thats a pretty good rate of positive response for me. The thing about Ren is he doesn't fit in one genre. I've heard a lot of reactors trying to figure this one out, and I'm "he's unique, you'll never fit him in one box. Can't be done!" (Yes, I talk to the tv as well.) So far, i've heard ballads, hip-hop, and rap as well as classic rock covers.

Besides his talents, he has drawn a lot of interest for his openness with his health struggles- both physical ad mental. He had an misdiagnosed case of lime disease, between that and the medications he was given he suffered from illnessand psychosis for ten years. Eventually, a doctor said you have Lyme Disease, and the tests confirmed it. Ren lost his twenties - a decade he was so sick he was usually stuck in his bed. He learned to sing and play instruments from watching Youtube.

When I'm trying to get people to check out Ren, I try to promote his creativity with different music. Hi Ren is a good starting place. How to be me (Ren and Chinchilla) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SDR7sup3DsU . You might also try Blind eyed (Ren and Sam Tompkins) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6z7ug3B_Sts and/or Ren's work with the band The Big Push, a street busking band that is no more, but a lot of fun to hear.

What I really appreciate is that Ren has a real knack for finding people to work with who are fantastic. Chincilla has an EP ON Island Records that has been out since June and Sam has recently been signed with the same company. Ren's independent album Sick Boi reached number one on the UK charts without any backing from a record label or regular radio play.

I try not to let my enthusiasm cause me to make crazy sounding claims. But I would bet many things that in ten years he will still be a presence in popular music. Last comment Ren and Chinchilla singing Sexual Healing on the street is a spectacular! thing.

Last week Gabby had a "neurological event". I don't know when but suddenly she was not walking well (circles mostly), the next day she seemed to be slowly improving(or at least learning to work around her difficulties) but the day after that she had lost any gains from the day before. After talking it over with my sister, and realizing the poor girl had no idea why she couldn't get from point a to point b I reluctantly concluded that what I wanted was selfish. So I gave her a kiss, told her she was a good girl and let her go.

I'm missing her so much. As I said, it's amazing how much presence a little 6 pound cat had, and how empty the apartment feels without her. My sister is "loaning" me her cat Buttercup for now. (She has two dogs.) That helps. She is the lowest energy cat I've ever met, If you've ever known a Persian you may have an idea of her activity level. But even at that she is another living presence and that makes a huge difference.

So, I'm still puttering with my genealogy. Just when I think I've finished and there are no more discoveries to be found, something else crops up. Yesterday, I saw a new name connected to a private family tree with the same surname as mine. I had to ask and that lead to hastily fired off emails between us. If you aren't into family history research you have no idea how geeky we get with others who share our interest, and if we are related, no matter how distantly, the geek-out factor is multiplied many times over. It turns out this person who I will call "Becky" was just as enthused as I was. I was able to add her line to my tree. We have the same 4th great grandparents who arrived in America in 1726. My family arrived in Markham, Ontario, Canada in 1804. (If you read the children's book,"The trail of the black walnut", by G. Elmore Reaman that's pretty much a similar story to my family history.) My family branch descends from one of the sons of the original arrivals to North America, and Becky's branch descends from another son. So. we are fifth cousins once removed.

Coincidentally, she lives in the city that has absorbed the little hamlet where my dad grew up.There was my grandfather's grain mill and a blacksmith opposite, and a wee little brick schoolhouse about half a mile away. (Dad used to ride his pony to school to avoid walking.)You could call the community a hamlet (I can't think of a single word to describe a smaller community.) but calling it a hamlet would make it seem bigger than it was. My dad was born immediately following the end of WW1, when many families changed from identifying as having German ancestry to Pennsylvania Dutch. (His family were Mennonites, not Amish so that was inaccurate.) When I would try to find out from my father where we came from the response would be he didn't know. Combined with his personal history as a WWII veteran who was "feet on the ground" in Europe during the war, probably explains his attitude.

I have my dad's copy of the photograph from the family Reunion on August 8th, 1931. I only know four people in the picture, my dad's immediate family. And yet some of my dad's cousins were alive when I was a young adult. We would be out and he would stop the car and say I'm just going to run in and say hello to my cousin, and leave me sitting in the car. (I always had a book, so I'd just pick it up and read the next bit.) There are a lot of people in the old picture, they filled most of a bleacher leaving the very top row empty. The men are all in suits and ties and most are holding their hats. The women are all in dresses. Some or the women are wearing bonnets! (The reunions I've attended have been more informal.) There are several children with very blond (almost white) hair. One of my nephews had blond hair that was so white it looked like it was bleached. So now I where that came from. (It's really hard to get a good photo of the old picture, if I ever do I will share it.)

I just found out via The Vault, that Giancarlo Esposito has a series. He is the lead character. I'm actually excited to see this. I'm crossing my fingers that it isn't too gory. What am I saying? I have no doubt it will be violent and gory, and I'll still tune in. He's just that good and so worth the time. I may not always like the characters he plays, but I find his characters riveting. I relish every moment he is on screen. It feels like forever since I got excited about a new show. My fingers are crossed that this is going to be even half as good as I am hoping.
I've been doing most of the usual stuff for the last few months, impatiently waiting for winter to end and spring to hurry and dry up. I saw my first Robin on Saturday so that should mean spring has arrived. Fingers are crossed just in case. I've been working on the family history and if I'm right my mother's mother's people were part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. We were already here when those upstarts from the Mayflower started their bragging.

I have been exploring new music. What I'm doing is buying random CDs from the thrift store and listening to them. I've picked up about 5 per week and at $1 per CD even if I don't like one and donate it back that is a lot cheaper than buying them new. So far I've only come across two to donate back. It works for me, because I have wide ranging styles of music I like including classical and opera as well as rock and pop. I've added a lot of women artists to my music. Artists like Jann Arden, Melissa O'Neil, Dixie Chicks, and Martina McBride. So that's been a lot of fun.

Reading; I've picked up a lot of new to me authors at the thrift store. I've also found some new people who rec fantasy and SF. The library carries a lot of the titles they suggested so I'm headed there this afternoon to see if any are in the library and available. It's been a long time since I sorted out and organized my bookshelves. I did one set of shelves last night and found about 20 odd paperback I haven't yet read. So, I hardly need to go to the library. Bringing home books and adding them to my shelves before I read them clearly isn't working. No more new titles until I read what I have.

Gabby is doing well. Her Persian roots are really showing. She has a gorgeous long coat, and she loves being brushed, so we do that a few times a day and she simply looks stunning. A long hair calico is a gorgeous cat.
I'll get an updated picture so you can see.

It's been a couple of months and I think I've unpacked everything and organized it fairly well. My bookshelves are still in a state. I really need to spend an afternoon organizing them, separating fiction and non-fiction and filing them in alphabetical order. Every time I look at them I have to look away because it is really annoying to see them in that disorder. The next time it rains, I'm gonna deal with it.

It's raining right now and i have no interest in organizing my books. The next next time it rains, then. :)

I went for a walk in between downpours and it rained, of course, but nothing an umbrella couldn't ward off. It was a bit gusty, and my spring jacket wasn't doing a great job so i came home sooner than i planned. Its supposed to stop raining and warm up by the weekend. I just need to find something i want to re watch maybe B5 or Hill Street. Suggestions for something new or old are welcome. I can only rewatch Lost or Good Omens or Sense8 so many times.

I received your card. Thanks very much. Getting mail is lovely. I really appreciate it. Thanks again.

Just a few more weeks left to my least favourite season. I'm so looking forward to pavement and concrete that isn't buried under snow or slush. Hurry up spring!

Newish:

We don't have cable at the new place. There is this new thing that is ever so much better. I have a Roku and it understands, I need my show in order as they aired. It's so much cheaper than buying a complete show on DVD. Absolutely amazing. Today I found Leverage and Leverage Redemption so that is next I just plan on finishing SPN first. I stopped watching it after Jo and Ellen so I had years of the show to watch. Also I missed The Mentalist when it was airing, but it's an enjoyable show to finish off the day with an episode.

I have moved to a new city in a part of the province that I haven't even visited at any time in the past. Time for a fresh start. What a shame I brought me along. But as R. pointed out no one here knows me at all so they don't know I'm not great with new things or that I'm quiet. I can be someone else if I want!Anyway it's too cold to worry about that. I'll wait and see how I feel in the spring when it's warmer.

I've hung up my pictures and it feels like my space now. I have a lovely one bedroom that is huge and Gabrielle has lots of space to roam about. Did I mention I adopted a cat from the SPCA? She's about 12 years old and is an old pro at living inside. (Which i realized when she got up to the sink and didn't find a leaky tap so her next stop was the toilet.I showed her to her water bowl and she obligingly had a drink from it but that isn't her goto spot at all. She talks more than any cat I've met and bosses me around. She has quite the personality, and her name got shortened to Gabby because she has so much to say. This is Image "Gabby"

(Fixes link so Gabby pic is showing in the post (I can see it, hopefully others can too.)
Currently Watching:

Alaska Daily which is filmed in northern BC and the setting is absolutely gorgeous. The actors are all competent and putting in solid enjoyable performances. Hilary Swank plays an investigative reporter. The story she is hired to dig into is that of the missing and murdered indigenous women, which is far from being new, but I'm interested to see where the series goes with it,given it is an ongoing thing still in both countries. I mean they can't just bring the issue to light and go "ta da". That's been done to death. Anyway, that is why I'm watching, to see what they do with it, plus the location shots are stunning.

Currently re-watching: Being Human, the original UK version, which I have gone on record as loving. This re-watch isn't changing that. Annie, Mitchell and George are my favourite house-mates ever and will remain so until season four when we change some of the cast and now it's Tom, Hal and Annie and they are very close to be tied with the original trio as being my favourite cast in a series from the UK. (Being a bit of a snob, I never even looked at the American version of Being Human.I have no opinion on it at all.)(ETA: That is not true. I made the choice not to watch it because I was positive it couldn't come close to being as good as the original.I was positive it would be a disaster. So I did have an opinion. Just not one based on my own observations, but my feelings which I don't want anyone to think that I believe are solid actual facts.)

Currently reading:

Anything I can get my hands on by Adrian Tchaikovsky. I read Guns of the Dawn and it felt like I was reading a war diary of a young girl newly conscripted into a war she doesn't begin to understand. But there is magic, and swords and horses. It's a massive read - well over 600 pages and when I was done, I wanted more of the story of Denland and it's people or even of their neighbour/enemy Lascanne. Alas, it seems this was a one time look at Emily's world. I'd love it if the author went back there again, sometime. I really enjoyed the story in Guns of the Dawn. I have Empire of the Black and Gold which I am holding off reading just now. I'm not ready just yet to be immersed so deeply into a new world by this author.
