Projects and Such

The past couple of weeks have been pretty busy. We spend last weekend at my Mom and Dad's house in Tulsa. My sister, Karen, was in town, so it was extra fun. We went to the Tulsa State Fair on Friday, and watched TWO, count 'em TWO, college football games on Saturday. This was a big treat for me since we don't have cable in Norman, so our game selection is limited. The only bad thing, though not a surprise, was that the Texas Longhorns finally put a couple of holes in the Sooner Schooner. The good thing is that BYU beat New Mexico. I'm off track. Back to the fair. All you really need to know about the fair can be summed up in three words: DEEP FRIED TWINKIE. I could eat one every day. Take this advice: do not die before trying one of these golden beauties. Inow have a new interpretation of Lehi's dream.

Aside from the Twinkie, I went and did something important. I finally decided on a graduate project. I'm going to do an ad campaign for an outdoor retail company in Witchita called Backwoods. It's like REI, only a lot smaller and they only have 8 stores. I talked straght to the president and she sounded excited about the whole idea. I'll keep you "posted."

Yesterday was another bittersweet day in College Football. The Sooners and the Cougs both won their games, but I about died when USC beat Notre Dame in the last 7 seconds of that game. For those who missed it, it was one for the ages.......................for about 12 seconds as Notre Dame fans stormed the field. Then the refs pushed them all aside, gave SC seven seconds to work their magic, and the spell was right on. The game went from being the highest of high to the lowest of low, depending upon whose side you're on. I watched the game on campus because our TV is in the shop. The room was full of people screaming and weeping, both in sadness. Tell you what though, ND outplayed SC in just about every aspect. QB Brady Quinn was brilliant. Now let's just hope BYU can kick their butts when the Cougs roll into South Bend next week. Don't be fooled by my misery of yesterday. I know where my loyalties lie.

The next post will have more interesting news, promise. Oh yea, zoo and cookie party pictures below.

The Reply

Annika and I decided that the blog will heretofore be my domain, while the weekly email will be hers. Since each will contain much of the same information, I liken the situation to the scriptures. While her email may be compared to any number of modern biblical translations, my blog post is more like the inspired version of the weeks events. I'm only kidding, of course, as I learn as much from her emails as you do. And since her emails have historically been sent on a very regular basis, this blog is probably the lesser, and maybe less interesting, of our information flagships.

A few weeks ago, Red mentioned that I had sliced a considerable piece of flesh off the back of my hand while making a salad. I'm happy to report that the wound is nearly healed. But let it never be said of me that I don't put a little bit of myself into everything I make.

That's about all I have to say about events past. If I try to catch up to what I've missed since I last posted, I'll never catch up to the present. SO:

This was a pretty busy week. I wrote my first paper and made my first presentation of the semester. I always worry about the first one, especially having been away from school for the summer. The paper and presentation were a reaction to theories about fear appeals in persuasive messages. Hmm. I also had to grade an exam in the class I TA for. Annika helped me with that, which was extremely helpful. I like my job, but I hate grading tests. My other biggest thing this week is that I bought Adobe's Creative Suite CS2 for the computer so I can learn the programs. It's basically Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, GoLive, and Acrobat. Professors at school are always talking about how often the programs are used in advertising, PR, and marketing, so I figured I'd better learn them. It will be a process, but my plan is to have them down pretty well by the time I graudate. I know I'll use them on my graduate project, which will be an advertising campaign--for whom, I am not yet sure, but I'll post it when I find out.

Annika's week was very busy as well with her work at the high school. Those kids don't know how lucky they are to have her as a teacher. I see her stress about them, pray for them, and prepare with the tenacity of a starving lion to teach them anything she thinks will benefit them in the long run. Maybe one day they'll look back and see the impact she will have made on their futures.

Emmy is getting cuter everyday and constantly learning new things. She can do half of a pull-up if I hold her feet out from under her. She can almost crawl and is also learning to clap and make the sign for "Amen" after prayers. She loves to turn the pages and touch all of the puppies in her puppy book, and she prefers to feed herself slices of grapes and banana, pieces of bread, and frozen peas rather than eat the baby food we buy for her.

General conference was great; it gets better every year. Elder Bednar's talk in Priesthood meeting about young men becoming missionaries before going on missions was fantastic and timely. Too many missionaries go out and come home without ever becoming missionaries. Elder Won Yon Ko's talk on sacrifice was also superb. Did you see him bow to the audience after closing?

Now football. The Sooners won last night, which is fantastic, but we'll see how they perform next week against Texas. I'm going to be optimistic and predict a good game. Last night's BYU game at SDSU was pitiful. The Cougs were completely deflated. Let's hope they do better against New Mexico next week. If BYU plays like they did against TCU, UNM won't stand a chance, but I'm not predicting a win, just hoping for one. UNM looked good at the beginning of the season, but after losing to UTEP and getting murdered by TCU, I'm not sure they're as good as I thought they'd be.

This has been a pretty long post, so to the faithful friends and family who have read the whole thing, here's a virtual high 5 and a couple of pics.

Day 2

Bad day for football in Soonerland. I must concede, the Sooners have been way overrated this season. The QB, Rhett Bomar (or just Omar, depending on the game) did a lot of good things today against UCLA, but he also did a lot of very costly things. Nearly every UCLA score was because of an OU fumble.

Anyway, we did a little family hike this morning out at Lake Thunderbird near Norman. Above is a self portrait we took along the trail. Emmy loves riding in the backpack, and Annika & I loved having the weather a little cooler so we could get outside for a bit. We'll definitely be going back to the lake when the weather cools off a little more. The trail was great, and the leaves will be beautiful in the fall. We're thinking of getting a bike for Annika, putting a baby seat on it, and biking the trails after Emmy is a year old. I know she'll love that. Here is a picture of the Gremlyn in her pack.

Yesterday (Friday) Emmy and I went to the library for baby crafts while mom was at teacher training. She chewed on little foam squares while I made her a crown out of gold pipe cleaners. The library ladies were impressed and said that Emmy looked like a princess. Image

Here is a little picture of her in her crown.

Well, this week should be interesting. I've got some schoolwork done, especially on finding a graduate project and getting it approved so I can begin work on my proposal. I've got to have that done by the end of December if I want to graduate in May.

Also, BYU plays TCU this weekend. Hopefully they'll make a better showing than the Utes did. That was a shocker, though not quite as big a shocker as OU losing to them. Who the heck is TCU anyway?

First Post

I guess you could say we decided to jump on the blogger bandwagon.

We've been back in Norman since the end of August, having spent the summer living in Utah with Annika's mom and dad while I worked at Dugway Proving Ground. We miss the mountains already, especially me, but are happy to be back in Norman. The weather has been pretty good. Today is beautiful, and after a quick trip to Sam's Club tonight, we're going hiking at a little "Wilderness" area in town. One great thing about being in Norman is that we are close enough for G&P (Grandma and Papa) Lovell to visit often or for us to go up there, especially for important events like birthdays, General Conference, and when BYU plays Utah.

More later. The baby (Gremlyn) woke up, so we're off to run our errands.
