Subject: xorg: Move from asciidoc to asciidoc-base as dependency
Date: Thu, 5 Jan 2017 12:17:05 -0800
Package: Xorg
Severity: wishlist
Dear Maintainer,
Asciidoc has been split in different packages in #637006 and #729242.
This split has arrived in Testing.
To lower the number of dependencies to install during the build, could
you evaluate the switch of the build-depends from asciidoc to
asciidoc-base instead of asciidoc please?
asciidoc-base is enough to build manpages and html pages.
In addition to that, the xmlto package has been added to the
recommends of the asciidoc-base package in #692274, so it might not be
mandatory to have it in the buid-depends anymore.
Thanks for your help,
Joseph

Please revert the change in asciidoc instead. It's unreasonable IMO to
ask users (and I'm also talking about actual users, not just packages
building man pages) to install latex stuff which most of them probably
won't need. If asciidoc merely Recommended the dblatex stuff, as (as
far as I can tell) it used to, this would mostly go away.
Also, whether something is in Recommends or not is irrelevant for
build-depends, since Recommends are ignored for package builds.
Cheers,
Julien

dblatex was in the "Recommends" of asciidoc. By default the Recommends
packages are installed, so the actual users had that installation by
default before. That's the reason why asciidoc is now a dependency of
asciidoc-dbaltex.
What could be done would be to have asciidoc pulling asciidoc-base
instead of asciidoc-dbaltex. But that would impact the users relying
on the fact that dblatex was installed along with asciidoc before
(yes, there are users relying on that).
This split has been ask for several years now to be able to have a
package that don't have dblatex in the recommends.

Yes, I realized that after sending a few mails. Sorry for that confusion.

Thanks to Raphael's suggestion I moved the asciidoc-dblatex to the
Recommends section of asciidoc and make asciidoc depend on
asciidoc-base.
This way we have a behavior that mimics the old behavior and keeps the
split in place.
I'll check with Raphael if he can sponsor this upload.
Thanks for the report,
Joseph
