Solid as a ROC: Unlocking Efficiency in Remote Production | Key Insights From EMG/Gravity Media & Calrec Audio

Calrec’s Director of Product Management, Henry Goodman, chaired a remote production session in the Audio Theatre on Thursday 15th May at 11:20am with EMG/Gravity Media Chief Facility Engineer – Paul Sykes, Technology Director – Narinder Ball and Lead Audio Engineer – Neil Ottley.

The session titled: Solid as a ROC: Unlocking Efficiency in Remote Production: Key Insights From EMG/Gravity Media & Calrec Audio explores how cutting-edge remote production workflows are reshaping the broadcast landscape, especially when it comes to audio.

Remote production has moved from being an innovation to an operational standard, and with that shift comes new challenges and exciting opportunities.

Calrec are proud to have been part of this journey with EMG/Gravity Media, whose pioneering work in remote and centralised production is helping to define what’s possible.

EMG/Gravity Media's setup at The WestWorks, London

EMG/Gravity Media has established a bespoke, remote production centre at The WestWorks, London. The state-of-the-art ROC is based around a fully-fledged AES67/SMPTE 2110 IP infrastructure, with dedicated master control rooms, six production control rooms with audio control rooms, and seven flexi control rooms.

The audio setup at The WestWorks includes two 48-fader Calrec Argo S consoles powered by Calrec’s ImPulse audio processing and routing engine, a 36-fader Argo M console with internal DSP as well as six Calrec Artemis consoles ranging from 40-fader upwards, connected to the IP ecosystem via Calrec’s IP Gateway.

Neil Ottley, Lead Audio Engineer, EMG/Gravity Media explains, “With WestWorks itself being an ST2110 facility from day one, we also knew that there was going to be a lot of legacy audio feeds that we’d need to incorporate into that… so, we needed to think of an audio partner that was able to provide us with a solution that would allow us to fully integrate all of those various audio streams seamlessly, but also have one eye on the future.

“We’re already partway through a phased expansion of Westworks at the moment, which is coming very soon after the initial build, so we’re already expanding… Calrec fitted the bill for us in terms of the products that are available like the IP Gateways, ImPulse cores, Hydra 2 – all of that networking together and working seamlessly really really works for us.”

True Control 2.0 | Supercharge your remote production

True Control 2.0 can control multiple audio production consoles across different venues and locations. If you are looking for the flexibility to scale your distributed productions, disaster recovery, remote operations, back-up scenarios or enhanced effects mixing by expanding the number of products you can control with a greater feature-set, then look no further!

Why you need True Control 2.0

Maximise Resource Utilisation
Get more out of the resources you have, use existing people and equipment to enable more live production, unlocking more content across a wider product portfolio.

Live Distributed Workflows
Access more processing cores, from more surfaces and from any location, providing ultimate flexibility for putting live production to air.

Sustainable Live Production
Scale resources as needed or repurpose them for different events with minimal transportation of people and equipment to reduce your carbon footprint.

True Control 2.0 | Product portfolio

True Control 2.0 gives users far greater levels of remote control without the limitations of mirroring or parallel controlling, with control of an expanded feature-set including EQ, dynamics, routing, direct outputs and delay. More fundamentally, it gives broadcasters and content providers unparalleled flexibility to scale their remote productions as needed by expanding the number of products it works with. True Control 2.0 allows any of the products below to remotely control any other True Control 2.0 enabled product.

RP1 | Mix live to air with no boundaries or borders

Calrec’s compact 2U RP1 remote production unit is a simple and effective remote control audio processing engine.

It provides local DSP to enable the generation of monitor mixes and IFBs with no latency and gives an operator in a remote studio direct control over channel functions such as mic gains, aux send/monitor mix levels and fader levels. It also provides a mechanism to embed audio into existing backhaul technologies, such as SDI or MADI for backhaul connectivity.

With all DSP for monitor mixes taken care of on-site, the studio transmission console is able to concentrate purely on the main programme mix.

Power, Router, Control Processor, and DSP are all self-contained within the unit which has 2 x IEC connectors to provide PSU redundancy.

The core operates at 48kHz and supports:

  • Up to 96 legs as mono, stereo or 5.1 Input channels
  • Up to 24 legs as mono or stereo Auxes
  • Up to 96 legs as direct or Mix-Minus output
