More of everything: How broadcasters are changing their approach to meet rises in consumer demand

In Calrec’s latest white paper on virtualisation, Henry Goodman, Director of Product Management, discusses how the media landscape is evolving as viewing habits change. Broadcasters and content owners are having to prioritise efficient, agile, and sustainable workflows while continuing to deliver premium content at scale.

Hybrid production environments are becoming essential, allowing producers to balance economics, business models and quality requirements. By decoupling audio and video from hardware, broadcasters can scale production dynamically, orchestrate thousands of audio channels across distributed DSP environments and virtualise entire workflows.

Remote, distributed and hybrid production models are nothing new, but they are advancing. Truck operators are shifting their resources into new-build hybrid trucks that can work autonomously or be completely remote-controlled, while smaller units that pair powerful processing cores with more compact, yet flexible control surfaces are also emerging. Remote Operation Centres are commonplace, and the move to agile, virtualised infrastructures allows broadcasters to add processing resources for specific productions when needed.

Calrec’s True Control 2.0 foreshadowed this shift, enabling distributed DSP and control across multiple locations and products. This white paper explores how True Control 2.0 provides the flexibility broadcasters need to maximise resources and embrace adaptable workflows.

Looking ahead, the key for broadcasters is selecting the appropriate acquisition model to suit the commercial realities for any production.

ImPulseV Cloud DSP | Audio processing, reimagined

Calrec’s ImPulseV cloud-based audio mixing solution provides a virtualised Calrec audio mixing engine in a cloud-native AWS environment.

Accessed from anywhere in the world, it uses the same intuitive interfaces that Calrec users are already familiar with.

It can be controlled through Calrec’s Assist web UI on a standard browser, directly from any Calrec Argo or via True Control 2.0 from any True Control 2.0-enabled console, including Calrec Type R.

Delivering Calrec’s full broadcast feature set directly in the cloud with premium audio quality, it reduces reliance on physical hardware.

Optimised for low-latency throughput, real-time audio processing, control routing and mixing, ImPulseV allows broadcasters to flex resources for major events.

Its cost-effective OpEx model also opens opportunities for smaller productions that may have been previously financially challenging.

True Control 2.0 | Supercharge your remote production

True Control 2.0 can control multiple audio production consoles across different venues and locations. If you are looking for the flexibility to scale your distributed productions, disaster recovery, remote operations, back-up scenarios or enhanced effects mixing by expanding the number of products you can control with a greater feature-set, then look no further!

Why you need True Control 2.0

Maximise Resource Utilisation
Get more out of the resources you have, use existing people and equipment to enable more live production, unlocking more content across a wider product portfolio.

Live Distributed Workflows
Access more processing cores, from more surfaces and from any location, providing ultimate flexibility for putting live production to air.

Sustainable Live Production
Scale resources as needed or repurpose them for different events with minimal transportation of people and equipment to reduce your carbon footprint.

True Control 2.0 | Product portfolio

True Control 2.0 gives users far greater levels of remote control without the limitations of mirroring or parallel controlling, with control of an expanded feature-set including EQ, dynamics, routing, direct outputs and delay. More fundamentally, it gives broadcasters and content providers unparalleled flexibility to scale their remote productions as needed by expanding the number of products it works with. True Control 2.0 allows any of the products below to remotely control any other True Control 2.0-enabled product.

RP1 | Mix live to air with no boundaries or borders

Calrec’s compact 2U RP1 remote production unit is a simple and effective remote control audio processing engine.

It provides local DSP to enable the generation of monitor mixes and IFBs with no latency and gives an operator in a remote studio direct control over channel functions such as mic gains, aux send/monitor mix levels and fader levels. It also provides a mechanism to embed audio into existing backhaul technologies, such as SDI or MADI for backhaul connectivity.

With all DSP for monitor mixes taken care of on-site, the studio transmission console is able to concentrate purely on the main programme mix.

Power, Router, Control Processor, and DSP are all self-contained within the unit which has 2 x IEC connectors to provide PSU redundancy.

The core operates at 48kHz and supports:

  • Up to 96 legs as mono, stereo or 5.1 Input channels
  • Up to 24 legs as mono or stereo Auxes
  • Up to 96 legs as direct or Mix-Minus output
