Still Breathing

I just went through and changed several posts to private or friends only to separate my fan life and professional life.  Surreal trip through memory lane, since I started this blog over 20 year ago.  I'm still single.  I left Okcupid for a while and have given it a second chance in the past year.  It sucks now.  I miss what it used to be.  There's more screening, but the match system is terrible now.  Too many barriers to just talk to people... and yeah, I complained about the weirdos but it used to be a good site to find friends and people to just hang out with.  I miss that aspect.

Got to kind of be a "mom" by raising my nephew.

I fell out of fandom for a while.  Broke up with Star Wars, drifted away from Harry Potter.  I've gotten back into some Star Wars groups (Legends, not the new stuff).  But I need to focus my writing energy on things I can monetize.  So leaving this blog up cause, never say never.  I do want to write my 6th year HP fic before I die.  I think I may have even started it somewhere.

Okcupid Wall of Shame

Guys if you send a girl or message, and she's doesn't reply. Either A. she's busy, and you should be patient. B. she doesn't want to talk to you. Or C. You just wrote something so nonsensical or inappropriate, she's having trouble formulating a reply.

Keep in mind there are very specific reply criteria on my profile, because I am a busy person. This guys managed to hit all three reasons very quickly. Nothing like the holidays to bring out the drunk and lonely...

Do not send girls messages like thisCollapse )

Just so you know I'm not dead...

I'm not dead. I'm not. Just had little time for fandom loves. The first half of next year is looking really busy too. But with a little luck, the second half will ease up and give me a little window for fan projects.

I bring you a funny entry for the okcupid hall of shame. At the moment my profile announces that I'm on hiatus from dating. So the messages I'm getting now are primarily from people who haven't bothered to read my profile.

Personal details omitted for privacy reasons:

Pity is he's cute. But any guy with a 666 in his screen name is probably not up my conservative Christian ally.

Researching Irene Adler

Needed a way to bookmark some resources for a panel:

Why can't any recent Sherlock Holmes adaptation get Irene Adler right?

World

I've been waiting for someone to make a Harry Potter fanvid to this song:

As for me, been busy with pro stuff. It's been kind of a sad, sulky year for fandom. Aaron Allston died, and he's someone I really liked and was hoping to know better. Great writer, and a cool, funny, classy guy.

This year is dedicated to me wrapping up projects and maintaining some kind of marketing presence on the web. I hates marketing.

Of Monsters and Men - Epic Video

Haven't been doing much fandom stuff recently. Seems like everything is work or nephew. My new (as in discovered a few months ago) musical love is "Of Monsters and Men". I often find myself disappointed by music videos, but this one is just epic:

I miss my nerd friends...

Some days I get very frustrated by people who seem to go out of their way to misread what I've written. I don't mean stories. Readers can make their own interpretation of tales. That's half the fun. I mean very simple pieces of information in forums. Sometimes this is my failure to communicate clearly, and I accept responsibility for that. But I'm also hitting the "monkey of moderate intelligence" group on Linked In.

No mistake, there are some brilliant, wonderful people on Linked In, who are great contacts. And then there are other people... The sad thing is this particular group is supposed to be writers. You would hope the reading comprehension in writers groups might be a bit higher, but slowly I'm realizing a majority of these people hang about this group because they have no clue what they're doing. Now the ones who just admit that and are there to learn don't bug me. The young people and newbies don't bug me. It's these older guys who haven't made this writing thing work yet and blame the critics, blame the system, blame everything but their own lackluster stories. It makes my head hurt.

/end gripe.

For your amusement... another entry on the okcupid wall of shame. What's worse than a form letter introduction? A really badly written form letter (personal details removed):

This one is just funny...Collapse )

So he doesn't even have the typing on his cell excuse...

This was a compliment...maybe?

Not all bad message I get on okcupid are vicisious.  Some are simply unintelligible.  Like this one:

Probably ok, but Hidden just in case...Collapse )

Which is behind a cut, because while I think he's complimenting me, I'm not sure what the initials are for...

I give specific instruction for making capital letters on my profile too...

Les Miserables and Twilight

So after watching the epic awfulness of Breaking Dawn Part 2, my sis broke out her Les Mis DVD so we could regain some brain cells.

I had really hoped to catch Les Mis in the theatre, since I've been craving a film version of this musical for ages.  But it never worked out, so this was my first viewing.  Kind of glad I missed the theatre release now...

Samantha Barks was perfect as Eponine.  The three kid actors were brilliant.  Though I didn't like Gavroche's hair cut, his singing made that easy to overlook.  The Bishop was good.

Unfortunately the rest of the casting was either awful or ill used.  And the director seemed to have forgotten this was a musical and thus should have music as a central element...with actual singing.  They talked their way through far too much, whispered things that should have been belted out in passionate tones.  I could understand that some songs need to be truncated for time constraints, but they changed a lot of lines inside songs that were pointless or worse for the change, and kept a lot of weaker musical moments that should have been cut.  The camera stood still when it should have moved and moved random places when it should have stayed still.

I got the feeling that the director and some of the actors had absolutely no clue what Les Mis is about.  There were guns in the heavenly chorus for pity's sake!

I'm not saying the actors were bad, but the casting and direction were...the film couldn't find a consistent balance between realism and stylization.  I would have been okay with either approach, (though I admit I'd have preferred a more realistic/historical take), but the bouncing between the two was off putting.

I need to read the novel... I would have found some changes more acceptable if I knew they were trying to bridge novel elements back in...
