Rehabilitation of the Aboño thermal power plant using the Catari US system for a cleaner energy transition.

The Aboño thermal power plant, located in Gijón, Spain, underwent a profound transformation as part of the region’s energy transition goals and industrial decarbonization strategy.
The conversion of the unit, previously coal-fired, will enable it to operate on natural gas, reducing CO₂ emissions associated with the industrial process by approximately 30%.

This project, led by the company Duro Felguera, is part of a broader strategy to modernize Spain’s energy infrastructure, while at the same time ensuring continuity of electricity supply and the utilization of steelmaking gases from ArcelorMittal.
Catari was responsible for the design and supply of the scaffolding system used in the intervention, conceived to meet the demands of a highly technical, vertical, and high-requirement environment.

Single structure for continuous access

A single multidirectional scaffolding structure, over 50 meters high, was developed, ensuring continuous access to multiple levels of the installation.
The solution was designed to adapt to the vertical configuration of the existing industrial equipment, ensuring safety, stability, and ease of technical intervention across the entire working surface.

Catari US: modularity and reliability in an industrial environment

The Catari US system was chosen for its ability to adapt to demanding industrial conditions. Its modularity allows for the configuration of tailor-made structures while maintaining high standards of safety and efficiency. In this project, the three-dimensional model made it possible to anticipate technical challenges in advance and optimize logistical planning, reducing assembly time and adjusting solutions to the real needs of the site.
