So, apparently, as decided at Imagewincon over the weekend, we're going to try the whole actually-posting-on-LJ/DW thing? A renaissance, maybe? To that end, I'm totes coming back soon with an entry about my NYCC/Wincon vacation, but I need to sleep, so here's the new Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer:

It looks AMAAAAAAAAAZING!!

Going to be trying a new thing! Since I have been severely remiss in rec'ing things (and adding them to my pinboard at all, shh), I'm going to try to do a weekly recs post, every Friday. This will include everything I read since the previous Friday, as well as anything else I saw during that week that I feel like sharing (so, occasionally you'll see some vids). Bonus section at the end for things I've reread, but never rec'd in a weekly post before!

Since this week's post is tiny anyway, I went back to January 1st. Recs are alphabetical by author.

Five fics, all MCU, all Steve/BuckyCollapse )

Yuletide recs part two! I haven't gotten a chance to read everything I downloaded (or gotten through the last few letters of the alphabet, but this will be my last batch before reveals. More to come this weekend! Again, here's my Yuletide 2014 tag on pinboard, so you can see anything new as it's added.

These are alphabetical order by fandom, then title. Author names will be added after reveals.

Five recs in four fandoms.Collapse )

First batch of Yuletide recs! I'm frankly shocked that I managed recs, let alone before reveals. I'm hoping to get through at least the majority of the rest of the stuff I put on my kindle to read and have another batch out on Wednesday. We'll see how that goes, though. Here's my Yuletide 2014 tag on pinboard, so you can see anything new as it's added.

These are alphabetical order by fandom, then title. Author names will be added after reveals.

Onto the recs!Collapse )

I have been severely slacking in updating LJ at all this year; sorry guys! I check my flist every couple of days, so I've been reading all of your entries (and commenting sometimes? we all know how terrible I am at comments), but most of my fandoming has been taking place on twitter and tumblr this year, and I haven't usually had the energy to write lengthy entries about what's going on with me. If you're on twitter and/or tumblr, you should come say 'hi!', though, for sure. Especially if you had as many feelings about Captain America: The Winter Soldier as I did, because I am always up for flailing ridiculously about Bucky Barnes. :D

I am here for an actual reason, though! Which is basically to beg you for your help. /o\

Image

As many of you know, I go to Imagewincon every year. It's my favorite time of year because I get to see and hang out with people I know from the internet, and meet new people who I will then go on to stalk on the internet (in a totally not-creepy-at-all way, I swear)! Getting to talk fannish things in person is seriously the most amazing thing ever, and it's why I kept going to Wincon when it was still Winchestercon, even though I wasn't in the SPN fandom anymore. (In case you didn't know, Wincon used to be a Supernatural con, but switched to multifandom in 2010, and we have had a huge variety of panels and activities in a wide variety of fandoms for the last 5 cons.)

We've typically had about ~100 attendees per year, but that size is just not sustainable for us anymore. As you know, cons are expensive. The less people that attend, the more expensive they are. Our tickets are usually in the $100-$115 range, and so a lot of people who would probably have an amazing time don't come, because they can't afford it. And we want everyone who is interested in a fans-only fancon to come and (hopefully) have a great time!

So, for 2015, we are trying to make the con more affordable (and get even more people to come, because seriously it is the most fun and even more people means even more awesomeness!), so we want to grow to 250-300 attendees. This would allow us to offer the weekend pass for $55 (or $65 if you want to attend Winprom, our Saturday night dance party). But we can't do it without you! We're running an Indiegogo campaign to raise money to finance the con for 2015, which you can check out right here. We're trying to raise $15,000 by January 4th, but if we don't fully fund the Indiegogo, we won't get any of the money, and we won't be having Wincon 2015. Or any other Wincon.

Basically, it boils down to this: if we can't fund Wincon through this Indiegogo, there will be no more Wincon. 2014 will have been our last con.

It honestly makes me want to cry just thinking about the con ending, because I've had some of the most fun in my life at Wincon over the years. I knew literally no one before my first con (LA in 2007), and I am really shy meeting people in person, but I met a lot of great people over that weekend that I still hang out with to this day. The atmosphere is so welcoming every year, and you can participate in as much or as little as you want to, which is awesome for those times when you just want to hermit, rather than having a lot of social interaction. Plus, I've gotten to visit a whole bunch of places I wouldn't normally go, since we hold the con in a different city every year. 2015 is scheduled for Pittsburgh, at a gorgeous hotel that's right downtown and close to a bunch of cool stuff.

I could write another few thousand words about why I love Wincon so much, so feel free to ask me anything about the con if you're interested. I would love for you to check out the Indiegogo and buy a ticket for Wincon 2015, or buy one of the awesome perks we have for sale (art commissions, knitting, fancraft-y things, etc. -- more will be going up tomorrow, actually!). Or even donate a few bucks out of the goodness of your heart, to keep a long-running fan con going into its 10th Anniversary (and beyond, hopefully).

Any help that you guys would be willing to give would be much appreciated. Signal boosting online, telling your RL friends, donations, anything. I love you all and would love to meet every one of you next October. ♥♥♥

I've seen a lot of posts going around about the Winter Soldier, and there is so much conflicting information about when he was created, who created him, who he worked for, etc. that I decided to build a timeline of events to work out answers to these questions. Everything has been fact checked as much as humanly possible with sources from Captain America: The First Avenger (CATFA) and Captain America: The Winter Soldier (CATWS), along with some RL sources regarding the timeline for WWII. Hopefully some of you will find this useful.

Needless to say, this post contains massive spoilers for CATWS.

First, I'm going to talk about my theories about the creation of the Winter Soldier in the MCU, and debunk some of the stuff I've seen going around, like the persistent theory that Arnim Zola created the Winter Soldier. The actual timeline is at the end of this post.

Please keep in mind that a lot of this is conjecture, but I've backed that up with facts as much as possible. The timeline itself only contains information that can be backed up by canon.

After the Fall: Bucky Becomes the Winter Soldier and Zola joins S.H.I.E.L.D.Collapse )

Winter Soldier's Flashback and CreationCollapse )

The Russians vs. HYDRACollapse )

Timeline of EventsCollapse )

Unknown 2009: Natasha faces off with the Winter Soldier outside of Odessa. He shoots his target (a nuclear engineer) through Natasha, but lets her live. [Cap 2 says “five years ago”, so presumably 2009 based on the film taking place in 2014.]

In SummaryCollapse )

I would welcome any contributions anyone might have to add to this timeline, especially to the period of time when the Winter Soldier was operating pre-December 1991. If anyone has any sources for anything, please do let me know!

This post is also on tumblr.

I know, right? I think I've posted once this year, and it's almost November. /o\ That's what happens when I have a full time job and no energy to gather my thoughts for anything other than Twitter. But I set things up so I can post via email, which I can totally do while I'm at work, so I'm going to try really hard to post more often.

Oh, man, I just checked, and I've made two real entries in the last two years! *sob* Sorry for abandoning you, LJ! I promise to do better! I'm going to attempt NaBloPoMo in November again (post once a day for the entire month), so you may end up getting sick of me soon. :P

Oh, if you're on twitter, you should come say hi to me over there! I'm @bliss116 over there, and am about a 50/50 mix of fandom and RL. Currently obsessing over Agents of SHIELD (and Clark Gregg's face), and somehow I've ended up livetweeting the re-watch of The X-Files that I'm in the middle of (well, mid S6, anyway), which has been amazing.

You can also find me on tumblr (I'm bliss116 there as well!), where I'm pretty active. Still super angry that someone is squatting the chaneen username, but maybe it (or a variation I like enough) will be mine, someday! I really miss the interaction of LJ, though, and am trying to make an effort to engage more over here.

Umm, let's see, what else? Imagewincon was a week and a half ago, and I'm already counting the days to next year's! Best time of the year, seriously. ♥♥♥ It's going to be in Orlando in 2014 (October 16-19), and you should totally come!

I have to get back to work now, so I'm going to send this email, and see if it actually posts!

AAAHHHHHHH NEW FALL OUT BOY SONG! AND A NEW RECORD AND A TOUR!!! HELP, HELP, I CAN'T CONTAIN ALL THESE FEELS!

There are obviously a million things going on in my life (some bad and some good), and I will be back with a real post shortly (no really, maybe later on this week? I was planning it in my head, and then this happened), but this just had to be said. I honestly knew they would be back, but I could not be more happy that it is now. &fob;

It's apparently my 10 year LJ-versary today!  I had big plans for this day; I was going to make an actual post about what's been going on with me (short version: work, squee, health issues, moving, more work, more squee), and it was going to be great.  But I've had a migraine all day today, complete with breaking my nearly 16 year streak of not throwing up (New Year's Day, 1997 and a virus -- I'll never drink sparking red grape juice again), so I'm not really in the mood to pull anything together.

So, since it's Canadian Thanksgiving today (even though I'm not Canadian), I'll just say how thankful I am for all of you, and everyone else who has made fandom so awesome over the last decade (and the near decade before that).  I haven't really been around LJ that much recently, but I'm trying to change that.  If you want to keep up with me on other social media platforms (lol), I'm @bliss116 on twitter, and gardenofsastra on tumblr.  I've been taking a mini break from tumblr, but twitter can't really contain all of my squee, so I'm trying to figure out how to work tumblr back into my schedule.

And for those of you going to Wincon next week (OMG, ten days!), if you're okay with hugs, I'm going to hug you so hard, you have no idea!

If you are going to do this, you need to do it before March 1st. It has been said that users will not be able to do anything about this after that date.

With reference to Google's policy changes and how everything you do with your Google account will be tied together into their super-cauldron of information, you will probably want to clear your Google Web History out - if you turned that feature on - before month's end. After that, you won't be able to clear it, and everything you search for will be connected with your account.

To check settings and/or clear out your Web History:

1. Go to Google. If you aren't signed in already, do so.
2. In the top right-hand corner you'll find your email address or name, perhaps an icon if you have a Plus account, and a little downward facing arrow. Click on the arrow and a menu will pop up.
3. Click to 'Account Settings'. This will take you to a page called 'Accounts'. (If you have a Plus account, you might go via a Plus sign-in page.)
4. Scroll down to a section called 'Services'. Here you'll find an option called 'View, enable, or disable web history', which has a link next to it. Click on the link.
5. If you never turned web history on, you'll get a page asking if you want to turn this service on. Just click 'No Thanks' and all is good. If you did turn it on, you should have a list of your searches. At the top there is a button that says 'Remove All History'. Click this and follow the instructions which will remove all items from your Web History and pause the feature so nothing else will be added in future.

Also, you can completely remove Web History as a service from your account by clicking THIS LINK, checking the tick-box and confirming you want to remove Web History. To be safe, it is probably best to do the steps above first to remove any history that might have already been collected.

Just keep in mind that the link in the previous paragraph won't work if you never had Web History enabled. You'll just get an error, invalid link message.

Imagehermette mentioned this today on twitter, and I realized I've never actually done this meme.  IDK why, since I love seeing what's in other people's bags.  Anyway, here are entirely too many pictures of what was in my purse today.

It gave me an excuse to clean it out, at least!Collapse )

So that's my purse!  You guys should all do this meme, and link me to it, because I want to see all of the stuff you all haul around every day. :D

Hello everyone!  I've been super-busy recently, hence the lack of posting, but I wanted to get this post up before I forgot.  I am totally going to do holiday cards this year (no, really, I swear), and I would love to send you one if you want one!  Just leave a comment with your address, and however you'd like the envelope to be addressed, if you do (comments are screened).  Also, let me know if you care whether you get a Christmas-specific card or not, since I have both Christmas and generic winter holiday season cards, and will just pick at random unless you specify.

Please leave your address, even if you think I already have it.  And point me towards your post if you're sending cards and want to send me one. :D

Wincon peeps!  I'm organizing a Ghost Tour again for the Friday night of the con (October 14th), so if you're coming to the con and are at all interested, please go to this post and fill out the poll.  Hell, even if you live in the NOLA area and aren't coming to the con, we'd love to have you come with us on the tour/to dinner.

Can't believe it's only a month away! :D :D :D

I had fully intended to make this post last Saturday, but I was visiting my parents last weekend for the long weekend, and I didn't really absorb the episode as much as I do when I watch them by myself and am able to flail and be ridiculous, and pause it if necessary, and yell things at the screen (almost always necessary).  I've been busy since I got back, doing overtime at work (yay, extra money), so I didn't get a chance to re-watch until tonight.
