What Audiences Expect – And How Arts Organisations Can Respond

Drawing on large-scale audience research (Act Green), sector research with artists, orchestras and venues (Sustainable Classical), and an ongoing action learning project called Talking Sustainability, this session explores what effective sustainability communication looks like in practice.

What you always wanted to talk about as orchestra manager but didn't dare to

Managing an orchestra is a challenging job. It’s fun if things are going well. It can turn into a nightmare if the pressure becomes too extreme. In this moderated meeting without mikes, photos or videos, you can talk freely about your management challenges, problems, lessons, and solutions. Where in your career would you have needed more training or specialised advice to solve a problem? Do you have recommendations for colleagues? What would be the first changes you would make if you could?

Training, Admission Procedures, and Job Profiles in Classical Music Today

Shrinking public subsidies, shifting demographics, and extreme economic uncertainty: classical music—orchestras, opera houses, conservatories, and musicians included—faces considerable pressure and unprecedented challenges. Meanwhile, access to the classical world is still determined by unevenly distributed resources, for musicians as well as the public, and upheld by procedures such as traditional auditions.

Strategies for the DIY Music Community

Not everyone who works in music works for large organisations. Many of us have to wear multiple hats to get our work heard and produce the projects we want to create. From fundraising, marketing, booking, recording, releasing and so much more, we have to do it all ourselves. It has always been difficult. But often someone else has been through the same thing as you and is willing to share their experience.

Global Perspectives on Cultural Representation and Inclusion

PANEL | Across countries, cities, and musical traditions, questions of equity and representation take different shapes, but they often share common roots. Marginalized and underrepresented communities are omnipresent, shaped by stories of access, power, and cultural recognition. While the examples are not identical, the challenge is familiar: how can classical music institutions, or any cultural institution steeped in tradition, evolve to reflect the full breadth of the communities they serve?

What is a Conference Session?

The Classical:NEXT Conference is all about connecting and engaging. The jury-selected conference sessions are at its heart, featuring interactive formats such as mini-workshops, group discussions and lively debates, along with presentations and panels.

A meet-up is a semi-formal gathering designed to help participants form new alliances and deepen existing relationships. It provides a platform for established and emerging international networks to get together, brainstorm, develop ideas and connect with potential members or partners.

Ask all your burning questions, exchange ideas and get practical tips from our jury-selected mentors. Choose between one-to-one 20-minute sessions or join a small group for a 60-minute Roundtable session.

Besides the jury-selected Conference programme our off C:N Presentations offer delegates an additional space to present their projects, products or services. To learn more, contact us at [email protected].
