My new jewelry-making supplies arrived yesterday, so today I put together another attempt at a BTS bag charm for movie freebies:

BTS bag charm freebie, with one pin of beads in the members' Arirang album colors, and one pin with red and white beads and a whale charm

I'm still not totally happy with it. The main problem is that the head and eye pins I ordered on Amazon were shorter than advertised (supposed to be 3 inches, but actually only 2-3/4 inches) and also very flimsy, so I couldn't make the strings as long as I'd intended. There was no room for the purple heart bead at the end of the member bead string, which wasn't too bad, but the string that was supposed to be the letters "ARIRANG" with a red bead and spacer at each end was too long no matter how small the end beads I used were, so I ended up just using alternating red and white beads instead, with small silver spacers, and a whale charm at the end. I think I prefer that anyway but I'll probably have to get more red and white beads. I dug these out of a tube of mixed beads and I doubt there will be enough to make 100 charms.

The other problem is that the orchid beads I ordered weren't the same color as they looked online, so I can't use them. I did have some lavender beads in another set that I can use, but I only have maybe 30 of those so I will need more. I found some other light purple beads online and ordered those, along with an assorted set of stainless steel jewelry wire spools in different gauges. Should be better quality than the flimsy aluminum pins I ordered and I can cut lengths to size.

I do like the whale charms, but I only bought one pack of 24, so will need to order more. I also have some music note/microphone charms.I'm thinking I'll do one set of freebies with the whales and one with the music charms, so the freebies for each showing will be a little bit different.

Can't do any more until I get the new wire, so I will think about this one for a while and see if any other ideas occur to me.

Okay, so I knew that there would likely be livestreams of BTS concerts, both online and streamed to cinemas, but they are really going all out!

First of all, they will be doing a free concert on March 21, the day after their new album release, that will be livestreamed worldwide on Netflix.

Then, their first three concerts in Korea will be streamed online.

And the second of their Korean concerts and the second of their Japan concerts one week later will be streamed to movie theaters, April 11 and April 18.

And of course I will be watching and going to the theater.

Then I realized -- if I'm going to be watching BTS at the movie theater, I'm going to need more freebies to give away. Here I was thinking that I wouldn't need any more until August 2, when I go see them live in concert, but if I'm going to the theater in April, I will need more then. And, since the theater that shows the BTS movies is small and the same people tend to go, I try to make something different each time. So far, I've done two different types of bracelets, one made of flat clay heishi beads and one made of round glass beads, so I thought maybe this time I'd try making bag charms.

I made this mock-up with things I have on hand, just to settle on a design and figure out what supplies I'd need:

Quick mockup of a design for a BTS freebie, a bag charm with a pin of beads spelling ARIRANG and a pin of beads in the members' album colors

So, the clip and loop are just junk I found lying around, I'll get nice jewelry-grade ones for the actual charms. And I didn't have any eye pins or head pins so I used paper clips for the wires, which weren't very bendy, so ignore the messy wires. I don't know if I'll have enough letter beads to spell out "ARIRANG" (the title of the forthcoming album and tour) on all the freebies, but if I run out, I'll just use "BTS" surrounded by alternating red and white beads, since that's the ARIRANG logo color. (I have boxes of 500 each of the letters B, T, and S, so I won't run out of those!) The beads on the other pin will be in the colors of the members' versions of the album: Silver, Pink, Clear, Cream, Burgundy, Velvet Red, and Orchid. These beads were the closest I could get to those colors with the beads I have on hand, I'm sending for beads to match the colors better. The dolphin charm is just a placeholder, I'm getting purple hearts and whales and musical notes and microphones to put on the actual charms. Anyway, I think the design is pretty and they will turn out nicely once I've got the proper supplies. I've ordered everything today and it should all arrive early next week.

Then, ack, I've got less than a month to make around 100 bag charms! That might be way more than I need -- the theater I go to usually has 10 - 20 people per showing. But this is going to be a live concert of the whole band on their first tour in what, five years? I suspect there will be a bigger crowd. I'll have a better idea of how many people might show up once the tickets go on sale and I can see the size of the theater, but I'm thinking I should try to make 50 per showing. If I end up with extras, I can always take them to the actual concert in August. (With a sold-out stadium of 85,000, I'm obviously not going to be able to make freebies for everyone, but I'm going to take as many as I can stuff into my stadium bag.)

I'm going to be busy for the next month!

I need to go to the mailbox today. I was notified that a t-shirt I'd ordered a while ago from Weverse had been delivered on Saturday (nearly everything on Weverse is preorder, I'd ordered this a while ago with no idea when it would actually arrive) (and speaking of Weverse, remind me to tell you of the absolute havoc last night trying to preorder the new BTS lightstick), but it was snowing again and temps were in the negative numbers and I decided the t-shirt would just have to wait.

But today the temperature is supposed to reach a high of 21 degrees! (It's currently 17.) And I want to get my t-shirt before it freezes solid or gets stolen or something, so I'm going to suit up later and head out to the mailbox.

Still trying to decide whether to dig out the truck and drive to the mailbox, or attempt to walk the quarter-mile through the snow and ice. Either way, I'll have to shovel the sidewalk and make a path through the snow to the road or the truck. And I generally scrape the snow off the truck whenever I go out to clear snow, just so it won't pile up too much. And I probably should start up the truck to give it some exercise while I'm at it. And I suppose I should drive into Windsor to pick up my brother's mail at the post office and maybe get a few things at the little grocery store there.... Aghhh, I seem to have convinced myself that I should get the truck out and drive (that means also shoveling the snow behind the truck next to the road). I don't get much exercise in the winter, but it won't be helpful if I try to walk to the mailbox and end up slipping on the ice and falling and breaking more of my fragile old bones. (Did I ever mention that I'd been diagnosed with osteoporosis last year? I don't think I did.) I suppose shoveling snow is exercise enough.

Moving back to California is looking better and better to me all the time. Not to the mountains this time. Maybe Long Beach. I can't afford Long Beach. Anyplace in California I'd actually want to live would be way out of reach financially. Unless I live in my van.

Oh yeah, the lightstick. Weverse is releasing a new BTS Lightstick 4, which will have a new concert connection system so the old lightsticks will no longer work at any concert after the Vegas shows in May. So anyone who wants to use an ARMY bomb at any concert after that will have to buy a new one. Plus, of course, the new ones are really pretty and fancy and of course a lot of people who already have the older versions will want new ones anyway. Obviously they must have expected that there would be huge demand for the new lightsticks. They went on sale for preorders last night at 9 PM EST (times were simultaneous worldwide). I clicked on the Shop button precisely at 9 PM. Got a blank screen and then a connection error. This went on for 5 minutes. I had to laugh -- we crashed Weverse again. It wasn't even this bad for the album preorders. I finally got a shop screen after about 10 minutes. Repeated errors and timeouts and I finally got the four items -- lightstick, stand, and two accessories -- into my cart. Then crashed out twice trying to pay. By the time my payment finally went through, half an hour after the sale started, the stand had sold out and I was only able to buy the lightstick and accessories.

But I mean, come on, Weverse, get your shit together. Would it kill you to beef up your servers to handle the traffic you knew perfectly well was coming?

I'm not too fussed about missing out on the stand. I'm sure they'll have a second round of preorders soon, I'll catch it then. And I'm not even sure I'd use it anyway, I'll probably just keep the lightstick in its box. The lightstick itself is the main thing! Must have it by August for the concert, but there's plenty of time.

I'm glad I got to use my Map of the Soul SE lightstick at least once, at Jin's concert. I bought it on Amazon mainly as a souvenir, not thinking I'd ever actually go to a concert, so I wasn't too fussed about making sure it was authentic, and I'm still not 100% sure it's not counterfeit, even though it passed every test I could give it and it worked just fine at Jin's concert. But Jin's concert didn't have seat pairing (where you tell the concert system where you're sitting, so the ARMY bombs can be used to spell out words and make patterns), and I read that some counterfeits were so good they could hook up at concerts that didn't use seat pairing. So I wasn't sure until I got to Jin's concert that my ARMY bomb would actually connect, and I was thrilled when it did.

ARMY bomb

I was kind of planning on buying a new one anyway for the BTS concert, just to make absolutely 100% sure it was authentic, so I was happy enough to see a new one. I figured they'd sell out fast on the first preorder sale, but I didn't anticipate spending half an hour fighting website errors to get the sale through.

(All the while I was trying to watch the Superbowl, yay Seahawks! They were my hometown team all through college, and the only team I ever made a sports bet on -- remind me to tell you that story sometime. I don't get to see them much since I moved across country and mostly get shown East Coast teams. May have to sign up for NFL streaming or something, but anyway, it was great to see them again, winning and everything. Also loved the halftime show -- go Bad Bunny! and tuning into the preshow just in time to see Green Day perform "American Idiot"! Fun times.)

My latest project:

A red knitted cap with a braided tassel

I read about people in Minnesota knitting and wearing red tassel hats as a show of resistance against ICE. (Here is one un-paywalled article about it: Knitters resist ICE in Minnesota)

The pattern is being sold for $5, with all proceeds from the sale going to local immigrant aid associations. The sellers, Needle and Skein, write about the hat:

"In the 1940’s, Norwegians made and wore red pointed hats with a tassel as a form of visual protest against Nazi occupation of their country. Within two years, the Nazis made these protest hats illegal and punishable by law to wear, make, or distribute. As purveyors of traditional craft, we felt it appropriate to revisit this design."

I just happened to have a skein of red wool yarn in my newly-rediscovered stash! So I bought the pattern and last night whipped up a red tassel hat for myself. (Just a note for anyone inspired -- the pattern is fairly easy, but written for people who already know how to knit, with some instructions in abbreviations and shortcuts that a beginner might not be familiar with.)

My mom was born and raised in Minnesota and I still have a lot of family in Minnesota and Iowa. This is my tiny show of solidarity with them and all the others out there resisting.

Decided to dig up all my craft kits and see what I had.

I found:
  1. three unopened cross stitch kits
  2. two unopened latch hook kits
  3. one opened cross stitch kit that I'd done a few stitches on and put away for later
What I didn't find was the one cross stitch kit I'd opened and had a fair amount of work done on, which is the one I really wanted to start on again.

So I went on a hunt. Dug through all the bins and bags in the closet, drawers in chests, bins lurking elsewhere in my bedroom, bent-wood boxes in the dining room, and I found:
  1. a box of yarn I'd forgotten I had, including a whole bag of wool yarn, some handicrafters cotton, some acrylic.
  2. the knit snowman I made for my mom for Christmas one year after she'd moved into assisted living. It got a bit beat up along the way, and lost its pipe cleaner arms and most of its buttons, but I have all its parts in an envelope so I can put it back together at some point.
On my second pass through the closet, I finally found the missing cross stitch kit in a bag underneath some other unrelated stuff I'd thrown in. Yay!

Along the way, I cleaned up the closet, rearranged some stuff and made room for two more bins in the closet, while at the same time clearing enough of the floor that I can actually walk into it again. And now I'm too tired to do anything else.

Today is supposed to be the coldest day of the cold snap. It's currently 7 degrees F. High is forecast to be 8. Not leaving the house today.

Crafty

Here are some of the crafty things I've been doing this past year.

Two sweaters knit from the same pattern using acrylic yarn on the left and cotton yarn on the right

I knitted these sweaters a while ago. Found the pattern I liked, which called for acrylic yarn. I don't really like acrylic sweaters, I find them a bit itchy. But I wasn't sure how well it would work to swap in cotton yarn, which has quite a different feel and stretchiness from acrylic. I was going back and forth trying to decide which yarn to get and ended up putting both in my shopping cart at the yarn website, seeing what sort of similar colors were available in the cotton and comparing costs and then realized that, with the acrylic yarn on sale and the cotton Handicrafter yarn being cheap anyway, I could get both sets of yarn for around $50. So I ordered both, figuring I'd make the acrylic one first and see how I liked it, and then do the cotton one and see how it came out. So now I have two almost-identical sweaters. (The acrylic one is on the left, the cotton one on the right.) I like the cotton one best and wear it most. The cotton yarn doesn't hold its shape quite as well (you can see that the collar is looser), and it's not quite as warm as the acrylic, but it's more comfortable.

After I finished the sweaters, I bought yarn to make a knit top and some scrubby dishcloths. It all sat in the closet for a while, as I switched to making bracelets for BTS movie/concert freebies, but lately decided to dig it out and work on them.

A top-down knit blue and white striped top

First, I made this top. It's a top-down knit, made on circular needles, so there are no seams! No sewing! I dislike sewing seams (and finishing in general -- it's not really difficult, it's just tedious, it doesn't flow by like basic knitting does), so I thought this would be easy, but the pattern presented its own issues. The yarn was a sort of knobby, textured strand that looks pretty but is a bit difficult to handle. It was hard to make the stitches even and harder to count rows, so I ended up tearing the whole thing apart an starting over several times. But finally it got done, and I was pretty pleased with the way it turned out. It's been too cold to wear it yet, but it will be nice when the weather gets better.

Four items knit from scrubby yarn

Most recently I made these scrubbies. The scrubby yarn was even more textured than the top, but the patterns were simple and quick and didn't require too much counting so they were pretty easy. I'd bought two skeins of scrubby yarn, one in a blue/green/purple mix and one white/green/orange. I'd downloaded some patterns when I bought the yarn, but I must have deleted them by mistake or hidden them somewhere because I couldn't find them when I finally went to use the yarn. So I hunted up some more patterns and ended up making these.

The bottom two are dishcloths. The one on the left is a striped pattern, alternating the two skeins of yarn. Then the one on the right is a corner-to-corner knit, using the blue yarn. The top right is a washcloth, knit with the white yarn. (The washcloth and dishcloth patterns are all 7-ish inch squares, the only difference is the dishcloths are garter stitch and the washcloth is stockinette with a garter stitch border. You could easily use either pattern for either kind of cloth, it's really sort of arbitrary which is which.) And the top left is a scrubby, which I made using up what was left of both skeins of yarn, so it's sort of awkwardly half and half. I could have made it striped so it would have come out looking neater but I didn't feel like alternating yarns and I figured, what the heck. I just used the white till I ran out, then finished it with the blue. If I end up using it (rather than just hanging it from a cabinet knob), it will just get stained and raggedy anyway. I kind of like it the way it is. The only thing that makes it a scrubby rather than a dishcloth is the hanger loop, I guess.

Those were fun but I whipped them all out in a couple of days, so they weren't very long-term projects.

A pair of dangle earrings resembling a stylized Santa Claus

Today, I finally made these earrings! I'd bought the kit way back in October? November? planning to make them for my SIL for Christmas. (Pretty sure she doesn't use Dreamwidth and won't see this, but if she does... Merry late Christmas!) I'd been making bracelets for BTS freebies and thought, Oh, I can make earrings, too, and sent for the kit, not taking into consideration that making earrings requires working with wires and I'd only been doing bracelets with stretch elastic, which is quite a different thing. So I got the kit, opened it up and read the first instruction, and said to myself, I don't know how to do this. Figured I'd look up tutorials on the bead website, but Christmas season got kind of busy and I never got around to it. Didn't get them done in time for Christmas, then didn't get them done in time to give them to her before they left for the winter, so at this point I guess they'll be birthday presents. Anyway, I finally decided to watch some tutorials and learn how to make these, and here they are! I think they turned out pretty well for my first attempt at wire beading. They're supposed to be like little Santa Clauses, which makes them Christmas-y, but I think they're abstract enough to use at other times of the year too.

Not sure what to do next. I've got some spare yarn if I can find a pattern to use it, and there are always more BTS bracelets to be made for the concert in August! And I have some cross-stitch kits I bought ages ago and never finished, I could dig them out and give them a go.

The snowstorm is over, and it seems we ended up on the low end of the predictions -- I think we got 10 - 12 inches altogether over two days of nearly constant snow. The guy that plows our roads has been through a couple of times and I'm sure I could get out if I needed to, but I don't need to, so I'm staying put for the time being. I might try to make it into the little local grocery store tomorrow -- I still have plenty of food, but am out of some of my usual fresh salad veg, and I do like my salads. Plus, I suppose I should try to get a little fresh air, although I'm not sure how much 10 degree fresh air I can really stand.

The next ten days or so are forecast to be FUCKING COLD. (That is an official meteorological term.) I suppose people in, like, Siberia might disagree, but this is what I'm looking at for the coming week:

screenshot of weather forecast

I do not like it! I do not approve!

But I suppose I can't really complain. The power never went out, the propane tanks got filled on Friday so I won't run out of propane, I've got firewood, the roads are plowed, I'm perfectly safe and comfy here in my little house with my warm kitty. So I will just hunker down and wait it out as patiently as possible.

A gray and white cat lies comfortably in front of a wood stove in which a fire is burning
codyne: my wyvern tattoo (Default)
I made it to Walmart today to stock up on a few groceries, since I will definitely not be making my usual Monday grocery run this coming week. These last few trips to town, I have carefully chosen times when no precipitation was forecast, only to have it start snowing as soon as I hit the highway. At least it was just a light snow today. Supposed to get 12 - 18 inches of snow in the coming storm on Sunday/Monday and windchill temps as low as 15 to 25 below from now through next week. I really hope the power doesn't go out. I do have firewood for the wood stove and the backup battery charged up just in case.

Got everything on my shopping list, except the soy milk. They were out of it last Monday, too, when I shopped last. Fortunately, knowing that they're occasionally randomly out of it, I've gotten into the habit of keeping a couple of extra cartons on hand just in case. I should have enough here to last a week and a half or so. If desperate, I can make do with regular milk until Walmart gets it back in stock. I don't try to order it to be shipped any more -- back when my hip was bad and I couldn't drive to town or carry heavy groceries, I had all my groceries delivered and for some reason it was pretty iffy whether the soy milk would arrive, or whether the cartons would be intact if it did arrive, so I stopped even trying as soon as I was able to drive again. In any case, I try to do as little online ordering as possible during the winter, because delivery trucks don't want to come down our unpaved roads when they're covered with snow and ice, and a lot of stuff gets left out by the mailboxes. I'm about .2 mile from my mailbox, which is an easy walk when the road's dry, but dangerous for a wobbly old coot when it's icy, so I have to dig the car out and drive out to get the mail/packages, and it's just too much trouble.

Which is also why I bought a 5 lb bag of Calrose white rice, instead of ordering the brown rice online as I usually do. I had a brief moment of frustration when all I could find in the rice section was long-grain rice, but then it occurred to me to look in the pitifully small Asian section and they had the Calrose rice there. I knew they wouldn't have short- or medium-grain brown rice, but I figured they'd at least have the white, which fortunately they did.

I also bought a new Bluray/DVD/CD player, since when I tried to use my old one this morning, the tray refused to eject. Meh, it was old anyway, I brought it with me from Cali, and barely use it, so it sat there and died. I will have to try to use this one more regularly. Gonna set it up now and play my AgustD D-Day disc, which I ordered months ago and just today finally decided to unbox and play.

Success!

I got a ticket to BTS!

It's probably a horrible seat, I couldn't really figure out the seating chart, it's in the nosebleeds for sure, but I was so far down in the queue I figured I was lucky just to get anything.

I got in the queue for both nights, thinking I'd just go to whichever night I got into first. And I was 38,546 for Saturday and 32,651 for Sunday. High numbers either way, but at least I was in the running for an 85,000 seat stadium with a 4-ticket limit per person. Since I was higher in the Sunday queue by about 6000, I decided to go for that. Took about an hour to get in to actually buy a ticket. There were still seats available, but mostly single dots scattered here and there, so I just clicked on one that looked reasonable (they're performing on a 360-degree stage, and I wanted to be sort of in the middle right on one of the long sides, so I clicked on a section and picked one of the few black dots remaining and bought the ticket. People often say "there are no bad seats at a BTS concert" -- just being there in the crowd and the excitement is great no matter where you are.

The ticket wasn't that expensive, actually it was less than Jin's concert. I went ahead and reserved a hotel room while I was at it. I can cancel later if I change my mind but probably the best idea. It's sort of near the train station that has shuttles to/from the stadium on event days, so I can park there and take the train up to the stadium, to avoid parking hassles there. Tried to reserve parking at the station parking lot, but they only reserve about 3 months in advance so I'll have to wait on that. It's about a mile from the hotel, I suppose I could get a cab or even walk. Anyway, I've got plenty of time to figure that out.

Eek. Eek. Eek. I have a ticket! I'm going to see BTS!

Tomorrow the ARMY presale for BTS concert tickets begins. I am already getting nervous. But I have my ARMY presale code application in, have selected my concerts, got my Ticketmaster account ready, and there's nothing to do now but wait and hope.

They're doing two concerts at the MetLife Stadium, which is the closest venue to me, on August 1 & 2, which is Saturday and Sunday. I could go to either one. My plan is to get into the queue for both, and then buy in whichever one comes up first. Assuming I get a decent position in the queue and the tickets don't sell out before I get my chance. No one really knows at this point how fast the concerts will sell out or how hard it will be to get tickets. On the one hand, they're playing huge stadiums and doing many more venues than usual on this tour -- they're also playing Boston and Baltimore this time around, so the Northeast is well represented. On the other hand, it's their first tour in years, their first post-military, the fandom has only grown in the past few years and, people, it's complete chaos around here, ARMY has gone completely bugfuck. So who knows! I can only wait and see.

The tour dates were announced a week ago. Hotels near the venues have already sold out, even before tickets have gone on sale. (I haven't booked a hotel. I still haven't decided if I want to get a hotel nearby -- I did that for Jin's concert and it was almost more stress than it was worth. I do have a campervan, and there are various campgrounds along the way where I could probably get a spot for the night. At worst, I could just head home after the concert. It's about a three-hour drive, I'd probably get home around 2 - 3 AM. Anyway, I'll worry about that when/if I get a concert ticket. Won't know which night to plan for until then anyway.)

Their new album comes out March 20. I've pre-ordered a CD package and a vinyl. (All the physical albums sold out within about an hour? I've seen people claiming as little as 5 minutes, but I think I ordered mine at least ten minutes into the pre-order, and everything was still available then.)

Whew! After years of waiting for BTS to come back, things have really kicked into high gear!

2025 was a year.

I actually had some pretty good stuff happen this year. Also some pretty bad stuff. (Looking back at my posts for the year... wow, I barely posted. Once in January, once in February, and then a spate in December. I just haven't felt very wordy.)

Started out with lots of good intentions. This past winter was my first in New York where my right hip was finally healed and I was feeling pretty good, so I wanted to spend the winter actually Doing Things and not just holed up in the house. I had plans, people. None of which happened. It's official, I hate New York winters. Not sure what, if anything, I'm going to do about it, but I hate it here during the long dark. It's not the cold I mind so much -- even in sub-freezing weather, I can bundle up and survive. It's the endless snow and ice. The temperature rarely gets above freezing for the entire month of January and much of February, which means that whatever snow we get never melts, it just continues to pile up, with layers of ice in between, and even with grippers on my boots, I end up slipping and falling just trying to get down to the truck. So far, haven't injured myself, but it's always a risk, and makes me really not want to go out. So January and February were pretty much spent staying home as much as possible.

(My brother has mentioned to me a couple of times that at some point they will probably want to stop being snowbirds and move south permanently. He asked me what I thought about moving somewhere in the south with them, and I just... I don't know? I've never spent much time anywhere in the southern US. I guess it just depends where they end up. They like South Carolina. They also like Alabama for some reason. I mean, it's all the same to me. I guess it wouldn't be any worse than living in New York. Of course, I don't HAVE to go with them, but I sure don't want to stay here if they're not living here any longer -- the only reason I moved to New York in the first place was to be near them, and I don't love it otherwise. If they go, I'll also go, but where? Part of me would rather just move back to California. Oh well, guess I'll worry about that when the time comes. One thing for sure, I am not moving anywhere until I sell this house, and I have my doubts whether it will be easy to sell. I might be stuck here for a while. Anyway, that's a thing for future me to deal with.)

Home Improvement )

I went on a couple of camping trips this year, first in May, meeting up with my brother and SIL on the last two stops of their winter travels, at Caledonia State Park and Hickory Run State Park in Pennsylvania. Both were fun adventures! Then we went camping in June to three parks in upper New York, Green Lakes State Park, Westcott Beach State Park, and St. Johnsville Marina & Campground.

Van plans and disasters )

Now for the good stuff! BTS!

BTS is back! )

Happy New Year! Hope it's a good one for everyone.

So, yeah

Yes, the cat had rabies. I had my first round of shots on Friday, and really, it was not anywhere near as horrible as it's been made out to be. Seriously, I had people in the ER where I went for the treatment telling me as they were checking me in how painful the shots were, and how they were going to inject me right in the bites (sort of gleefully, almost, although I will charitably assume they were trying to prepare me for the worst so I'd naturally be relieved that it wasn't really so bad after all).

Granted, I have a high pain tolerance and no fear of needles, especially after the numerous surgeries and procedures I've been through in the past few years, but really? the shingles shots were way worse. So, people, here is my message to you: if you ever suspect you have been bitten by an animal that might have rabies, DO NOT HESITATE to get the shots. If you wait until you start having symptoms, it is too late. Get the shots, it might be somewhat painful and inconvenient but it's seriously nothing compared to dying of rabies.

Public service message over, here is what happened: the initial rabies treatment consists of two sets of shots. First is the actual vaccine. It's given in a muscle, and they let me choose the location. I chose to get it in my right thigh. I barely felt it, didn't even need a bandage, it didn't get sore afterwards or have any aftereffects. I will get three more of the vaccine shots, tomorrow (Monday), Friday, and the Friday after. I had to go to the ER to get the first set of shots, but I can go to the walk-in clinic for the remaining shots. Quick in and out, no big deal.

The second part of the treatment (probably the reason I had to go to the ER, because it had to be administered by a doctor) was to "infiltrate" rabies globulin into all the bite and scratch sites. This was done with a very thin, short needle about a centimeter long. The doctor inserted the needle underneath and around all the bites and injected globulin. It was a bit ouchy but nothing too painful. It took a while because I had two bites, one on each hand, and scratches on my right hand and both legs where the cat came up behind me and jumped on me. After doing the main bites, I asked the doctor if she wanted to do the scratches on my legs. She said she had plenty of globulin and it couldn't be reused for anyone else, so we could use as much as I wanted. The scratches probably weren't necessary to infiltrate, but I figured it couldn't do any harm, so I told her to load me up with as much globulin as she could. She had to change the needle twice because it was so thin it got bent. My hands were a little sore at first, but the soreness went away quickly and I think my hands actually felt better after. Maybe it was psychological relief, but it did help to have healthy serum go right into my bites and scratches.

So that was it. Next time I decide I want to get another cat, I will go to the animal shelter.

On to better news! Yesterday, we had an early Christmas dinner with my younger nephew and his fiancée (they just got engaged, so we were celebrating that, also). They are going to spend actual Christmas with her family, so they came here this weekend. I was pretty exhausted from my week of stress, and hadn't had time to do any shopping, but I managed to put together some veggie enchiladas for dinner, and a few presents. My brother & SIL and I are going to swap main presents on actual Christmas, but I wanted to bring something for them. I've been feeling crafty lately, and I had some leftover yarn from various projects, so I started searching knitting patterns, and decided on a wine bottle cozy (because they like to drink wine) and a couple of bottle/can cozies. Then I decided, since my sister-in-law is a HUGE Mets fan, to see if I could find yarn in Mets colors to knit the cozies. Fortunately, Walmart has a decent selection of basic weight 4 acrylic yarns, and I was making my weekly trip to Walmart anyway, so I picked up a skein each of royal blue and orange.

A wine bottle sitting on a table, wrapped in a knitted cozy in Mets blue and orange

I didn't take a picture of the can cozies but they were just plain cylinders, one in blue with an orange trim and one orange with blue.

They were a big hit, my sister-in-law really got a kick out of having cozies in Mets colors. (I have plenty of yarn left over, I will probably knit her a beanie & scarf with the rest.)

For my nephew and his partner, I had another plan. My mom always told me she wanted me to have her wedding diamond -- it was originally in a plain gold wedding set, but after my dad died, she didn't want to wear wedding rings any more and had the diamond reset in a swirly gold band and put a sapphire in the wedding set, just to have a stone in it. I don't wear rings so I just put mom's jewelry aside, and I don't have kids of my own, so I long ago decided I'd give the diamond to whichever of the nephews got married first. So I took the ring, the wedding set, and a professional appraisal mom had done of the ring way back in the 90s, and gave them to the kids, with an explanation of how they came about and how I'd decided who gets them. (If the older nephew every gets married, I have another diamond ring of mom's I'll give to them. But there's only one wedding ring, so I had to choose between them, and first come, first served.) They were very appreciative! The ring is currently too big for my future niece, so I don't know if they'll resize it or just keep it as a keepsake, but they loved it and will take good care of it, so I'm glad to have finally passed it on.

We had a delicious dinner and I'm relieved and glad to be getting my life back to normal.

As I feared, the Hellcat was dead when I got up this morning. I boxed it up, called the Health Department, and headed to the animal hospital to drop it off. They will send it off for testing and I should get the results tomorrow. The Health Department will authorize rabies treatment if necessary once they get the results.

Got home and spent a couple of hours cleaning up the cat room. Such a disaster, the cat had torn up two bags of cat litter and chewed up everything chewable it could find. I thought about what I could salvage and finally decided to just wash what could be washed, wipe down with Clorox anything that could be cleaned, and throw away the rest. I threw away the cat bed the cat had died in, and all the toys that had been strewn around, as well as all the cat litter and kibble in the floor. I could have washed some of the toys, but I decided to just get rid of them all and start fresh. Most of the ones in there he didn't play with anyway -- his favorites are all out in the rest of the house and he has plenty out here. I packed up a few things to be washed -- another cat bed I don't think the cat used, and the towels I'd brought in -- and they'll go in the laundry with the clothes I was wearing around the cat. Everything else got sprayed with Clorox and wiped down: the cat tree, the table and plastic chair, the carrier I used to bring the cat into the house, the stroller and the pile of carriers and stuff in the corner. I emptied the litter box and washed it out with bleach cleanser. Took about two hours and I'm exhausted. I remembered to buy and use gloves while I cleaned, but forgot to wear a mask, and stirred up enough dust to aggravate my allergies.

Last thing I'm going to do is steam clean the floor with my steam mop, after I rest a bit more. I already sprayed it with Clorox but I'm going to mop it as well. Then let the room air out for the rest of the day and put Davey's stuff back in it tomorrow. Meanwhile I'm keeping it closed so Davey can't get in. I suspect I'm being overly cautious (and Davey's had his rabies vax anyway, so he should be fine), but the room could use a good deep-clean anyway and I want to make sure all the kitty's germs are gone.

A void cat sitting in the floor looking at me with evil intentions

I only got one half-decent picture of the kitty in the short time before it became a rage demon. It was a cute little void cat with extra toes on its murder mittens. Poor kitty. I'm sorry it ended this way but at least it's not suffering any more.

Cat update

Got up this morning and did not hear the hellcat meowing or banging around when I was in the kitchen getting Davey's breakfast ready, so I thought it had possibly died during the night (because it always yells at me when it hears me nearby). Had my morning cocoa and then collected supplies (a large plastic bag and cat-sized cardboard box for the body, if any) and armored up with heavy jeans & sweatshirt, fireplace gloves and the snow shovel for defense, to peek into the cat room and check on the situation. Put Davey in the bedroom so he couldn't go in the cat room while I checked it out (he still thinks Oh Boy! Another cat! and wants to go visit it, poor guy. I really do need to get him a friend when all this is over).

Cracked open the door -- no response. Opened the door and looked inside. No hellcat rushing to attack. Then I saw it lying in the floor across the room, peering up at me. I waited a moment to see what it would do, and after a bit, it got up and started walking towards me, meeping slightly. It seemed a bit wobbly, and not aggressive.

I checked that there was still water in the dish I put in the room yesterday and kibble lying in the floor. The litter box appeared to have been used (I put non-clumping paper pellets in it so it would last a week or so without being scooped, so it doesn't need attending). I backed out before the cat reached me and closed the door.

So. Two possibilities: either the cat has finally calmed down and decided the room is not a torture chamber and no longer wants to murder me on sight, or the cat is in the final stages of its disease and no longer has the strength to attack. Either way (and sadly I suspect it's the latter; it was unnaturally aggressive and violent for days, classic rabies behavior), I will give it another day and see what happens. I suspect it will either be dead tomorrow or calm enough for me to care for it for until its quarantine is over. At which point, I will still have to figure out what to do with it, but I'll worry about that when/if the time comes.

Update to the Update: Just got a call from the guy at the auto place asking me how the cat was doing. I explained what was going on, that the cat had bitten me and was suspected of having rabies and needed to be quarantined for ten days. He says he doesn't think it has rabies because it was fine with them in the garage on Friday, playful but not aggressive, and one of the guys was kind of regretting letting it go. I said if the cat is still alive on Monday (the end of its quarantine), I would be happy to let the guy have it. I said I would definitely let him know either way, if the cat dies and tests positive for rabies, anyone who was scratched/bitten by the cat needs to get treatment. If it doesn't die, I would love to be able to find it another home. So it looks like things are settled. Hellcat gets a reprieve -- from me, anyway. Now we just wait and see.

I've been feeling lately that everything I try to do turns out horribly. I really don't know what to do, aside from just stop trying to do things.

Here is my latest! I've been thinking, ever since my cat Mister died last year, that I would like to get another cat at some point. I like having more than one cat, and Davey also seems to do better with a cat friend. He doesn't like being left alone and has become rather more timid since his buddy left us.

So when I went to get my truck undercoated and rustproofed on Friday (since New York is notorious for corroding vehicles with road salt in the winter), in mid-20s weather, and saw a black cat running around in the parking lot, I said, "Oh, kitty, go inside!" The guy who was in charge of my truck was also concerned, and we both knelt down and reached out to the cat, who came right over. She (I'm going to say "she" although I really have no idea what sex the cat is) was wary and swatted at our hands but stayed close. The guy wrapped her up in his coat and took her into the garage, where she stayed all through the four hours my truck was being worked on. She wasn't friendly but didn't try to run away. She ate half of one guy's lunch steak and took over one of the chairs. So it seemed she was at least semi-tame. I offered to take her home with me, thinking she was probably just frightened and would settle down in time.

When we were ready to go, I put my coat down on the car seat and the guy brought her over to put in the truck. She was a bit fussy but not aggressive. I didn't like bringing her loose in the truck, but didn't have a carrier with me so there wasn't much choice. I headed out, hopeful that she would stay huddled in my coat while we drove.

But no. She started wandering, climbed on me, went into the back seat, chewed on my coat, attacked my hand and bit me, wouldn't stay calm. Finally got home, left her in the truck while I went into the house to get a carrier and bring Davey's litter box out into the kitchen and set up a litter box for her in the cat room, then went to stuff her in the carrier and bring her inside.

By now she's agitated and angry and continues to attack me and I just left her in the back room, hoping she'd calm down after a while. I washed the bite thoroughly and put Neosporin on it, then went back into the room to sit with her for a while. She sat for a while but then got aggressive again so I left her alone.

So now it looks like I've got a feral cat trapped in my back room and I don't know what to do. Can't just put her out, but can't keep her if she's going to try to attack me every time I go into the room. Then it occurs to me, she's wild and she bit me. What if she's got rabies? So I jumped back in the truck and headed into town to the walk-in center, where I'm told that if I'm concerned about rabies, I need to go to the ER because that's the only place that can do the initial rabies treatment. Look up the nearest ER and head there, and am treated to the smoothest, most pleasant ER experience I've ever had. (Had to count up the number of times I've been to the ER, it's four, twice I arrived in an ambulance with broken bones, once I got advised by a nurse on the phone to GO TO THE ER RIGHT AWAY for a bad cut on my finger which was really not necessary and everyone at the ER was all "why are you wasting our time" and I sat there for hours while they saw everyone else and finally got a tetanus shot and had to beg a bandage for my bleeding finger since they took off the one I came with and they were going to send me away without one so that wasn't at all fun.) Anyway, I just said "Got bit by a stray cat" and was immediately whisked away, registered, checked in, vitals taken, filled out a form for the Health Department, settled in a bed, had my hand x-rayed, and a very nice doctor asked me a bunch of questions about the cat and the bite and seemed pleased that I'd already washed and treated the wound and isolated the cat in my back room. He prescribed antibiotics for a week and said, since I had the cat and there would be plenty of time to start the rabies treatment later if necessary, I should just watch the cat and see if it was still alive in a week. If it survives, it doesn't have rabies and I'm fine. If it dies, they can start treatment then.

So. I'll have this hellcat in my back room for at least a week while I wait to see if it has rabies. Unless it dies before then. Meanwhile... I'm afraid to even go into the room with it lest I get bitten again. So I've just been cracking the door open and tossing in handsful of kibble. There's a cat fountain in there and it's still got water so I don't have to worry about that for now. I have no idea if she's using the litter box but I don't care, I'll clean it up later if necessary.

Someone from the Health Department will probably call tomorrow to follow up. If they offer to have Animal Control come and get the cat, I will agree. She will probably be euthanized, which sucks, but she's not remotely adoptable, and being put back out on the street in this weather is probably a death sentence anyway. If they want me to keep her for the week I will, but unless a miracle occurs and she stops attacking me every time she sees me, I will have to call animal control to come get her anyway. I can't keep a cat if I can't even clean the room and fill her water bowl without being attacked. No rescue will take her and I can't just dump her back on the street in sub-freezing weather.

So. No good deed goes unpunished. Tried to save a stray cat, instead probably became the death of a feral kitty, got attacked and bitten, stressed out to the point I've barely eaten or slept in the past few days. And might have been infected with rabies. So that is the latest in the series of disasters that has become my life.

I had a dream the other night that my cat, Mister, was alive and well and, for some reason that was never clear to me in the dream, I was trying to rehome him. Actually, more like I was "auditioning" him for the position of someone's cat. I'd decided to take him to the church down the block, but I thought I should have some fancy basket or something to carry him in, because it was important that he be presented properly. But I didn't have a fancy basket. Finally, I decided to put him in the backpack carrier and walk backwards down the street to the church, so he would be in front as if leading the way.

Got to the church, let him out of the carrier, and began enumerating his excellent qualities to the priest and other churchpeople who were there, pointing out that he was friendly and soft and liked treats. Mister kept jumping down and heading towards the large double doors that were constantly opening and closing as people came in and out. I ran over to grab him, insisting that they must be careful not to let him out.

Then we were back home, and I suddenly began thinking, why am I doing this? He won't do at the church, there's no way of keeping him inside with those doors constantly opening and closing, why don't I just keep him? This is wrong. And I asked Mister, Do you want to go live at the church, or do you want to stay with me? Whatever you want is good. If you do go, I'll come and visit you often.

And he said to me, I am perfectly capable of walking back and forth from the church myself.

And I thought, if he's smart enough to answer me, he's smart enough to walk back and forth on his own. I should let him do what he wants.

Then I woke up, thinking, what the heck was that about? Best I can come up with is that the church represented the afterlife, and I was dreaming about how hard it was to let him go, even when he got so sick. But I wish he really could go back and forth as easily as walking down the street.

A day late, but w/e. I haven't posted in a long time, and I'm not sure how much I'll be posting going forward, but I thought I'd try to do a round-up of 2024 and see how it goes.

February: I traded my Ford F-150 for a Ford Maverick, which I've had for almost a year now, and I can say that I unequivocally love my Maverick! It drives like a dream, fits into parking lots, handles mud and snow with its AWD, carries whatever I need to carry in its tiny 4.5-foot bed, and it's red! Best purchase I made all year.

May: Went on my first trip in my new RV. Getting it ready was difficult and stressful -- not knowing at all how to take care of it over the winter, I found the truck battery and the lithium RV batteries all dead as doornails, the coolant reservoir empty, none of the electronics working. After a lot of researching online, a few visits to my local auto repair place, and advice from a couple of FB groups, I got the thing dewinterized and everything working and went camping in Pennsylvania with my brother and his wife at two different state parks, Shawnee and Bald Eagle.

June: Said goodbye to my cat, Mister, who'd been struggling with some sort of intestinal disease for over a year.

And went on another camping trip -- this time to Samson State Park at the Finger Lakes in NY. Felt like I was starting to get the hang of this camper van thing, and no longer thinking that buying the van had been a very expensive mistake. It was also much easier traveling with one healthy cat, rather than two cats with one being stressed out, anxious, and sick.

August: Suga's Scooter Incident.

I don't really know what to say about this. If you're not familiar with K-pop and the extreme standards idols are held to, it all seems fairly ridiculous. But the repercussions are still reverberating around the K-pop world.

What happened was, Suga, who was staying out of the public eye while performing his required public service, had gone out to dinner with friends, did some drinking and then rode less than 500 meters home on an electric scooter. He rode on the sidewalk, wearing a helmet, at barely more than walking speed, then took a sharp turn into his residence, hit a small curb, and fell. He was seen by some police who happened to be nearby and given a breath test and found to be over the legal limit for driving, had his license revoked and was investigated for drunk driving.

I found out, along with everyone else about it, when he posted an apology and explanation on Weverse, his first public post on any subject since he'd started his service. I had a bad feeling about it, knowing how harsh South Korea is on its idols. I'd already had the experience of DKZ's Kyoungyoon being hounded out of his band due to his parents' religion, but oh boy did Suga's incident blow up like a bomb. The media went crazy, posting hundreds of articles a day about it, including several that used CCTV footage purporting to be Suga driving a motorcycle in the opposite direction, claiming that it was "proof" that Suga had lied about the incident. Antis demanded Suga's removal from BTS (his agency said it was "ridiculous" to suggest that Suga would leave), sent wreaths and trucks to HYBE headquarters telling Suga to step down. People claiming to be ARMY started a "Suga challenge" on X, posting pictures of alcohol bottles in cars with messages pretending to support drinking and driving. These were later found to be fans of other groups trying to smear ARMY and BTS.

Real ARMY, of course, fought back. This was my first experience of the power of BTS ARMY from the inside -- it was amazing and inspiring. There were so many displays of support for Suga, from bus shelter signs to banner trucks to bus wraps to street signs. Fans from all over the world sent messages from their own countries -- Philippine ARMY held a "Purple Walk of Love" with hundreds of participants. Taipei ARMY lit up a stadium with messages of support. Brazilian ARMY posted bus ads. LA ARMY put up billboards. When the real CCTV footage of Suga's incident came out, proving that he hadn't lied about anything, ARMYs demanded, and got, an apology from the network that had posted the false footage. They reported defamatory social media posts and got them taken down.

And we went on a streaming/buying spree and charted a number of Suga's songs. Even Forbes took notice and posted several articles about Suga's music dominating the charts, a feat especially noteworthy when he hadn't released any new music all year.

Eventually, he was given a fine and the case was closed. But it still crops up regularly. There are a lot of antis out there who are eager for any chance to tear BTS down, and Suga's incident is just too good to pass up. Most recently, someone sent funeral wreaths demanding Suga's removal from BTS to be set up along the sidewalks outside of HYBE. ARMY responded by sending trucks with messages of support to block the wreaths from the street, and lined up in the sidewalk in front of the wreaths. Someone also posted death threats to Suga online, and is being investigated by police and HYBE.

Anyway, that whole experience was very stressful and I spent most of August worrying about Suga. Especially considering that he has been very open in the past about his mental health struggles with depression and anxiety. He had finally seemed to overcome a lot of his troubles and was in a good place mentally when he went into the service, but it must have been a really difficult experience for him, and who knows what sort of relapse his mental state might have gone through. So I still worry about him and hope he's doing well and getting the support he needs. He's continued to stay offline and out of the public eye, and the public apologies he posted after the incident remain the only thing we've heard from him since he went into the service. So we can only wait and hope and wish him the best until he gets out.

September: Went on another camping trip, this time to Watkins Glen State Park, also in the Finger Lakes region of NY. Finger Lakes is a fun area, lots of pretty scenery and fun little shops. My brother and sister-in-law are big wine aficionados, and love to visit wineries and breweries to do tastings. I'm not a drinker, but the wineries are generally pretty scenic and often have chocolate or cheese or other goodies to sample as well.

My big project of the summer was to finally do something about my deck. It was in bad shape already when I bought the place -- paint all worn off, boards dry and split and coming up in places, slippery with moss and algae when wet. I'd had a contractor come out to fix my roof a year or so ago and asked him about it, but he said the boards needed to be replaced and it would cost $6000 - $7000 just for the lumber, which was beyond my means, so I wasn't sure what to do. The slippery algae was the worst issue -- you couldn't walk on it when it was wet without risking a fall, and I was worried about delivery people getting injured on it. So I researched and thought about it and finally decided to try cleaning it up myself. Maybe it wouldn't be a super good job, but I at least wanted it to be non-hazardous to walk on.

I have a pressure washer I bought ages ago, but thought it wasn't strong enough to clean the deck, until I tried holding the nozzle really close to the boards, and then it blasted the dirt and moss and algae right off. With the nozzle that close, it only cleaned a strip a few inches wide, so it took some time, but I got the entire deck cleaned, screwed down the loose boards, and painted it with special paint meant for old, worn decks -- it's thick and fills the cracks and protects the wood from further damage. It has made such a difference! My deck looks great and is no longer slippery. I only had time to do one coat of paint before the weather turned -- it got so windy that the deck was covered with leaves and hemlock needles faster than I could sweep them off -- so I called it good for the year. Once the winter's over and I can work outside again, I'll do a second coat.

October - November: Went on my longest camping trip yet, almost a month long. Every October, my brother and his wife take a trip down south, drop off their trailer in North Carolina (or is it South? I can't remember), then drive their van back home for the holidays. After New Year, they drive back down to pick up their trailer and start their winter travels. They do it that way so they don't have to worry about getting their trailer out and on the road if the weather is bad here in early January, as it often is. (We've got a couple of inches of snow right now, and they're leaving again soon.) I decided to follow them south on all their stops except the last one -- they generally do the drive home without the trailer in one long day, trading off driving and making the trip in around nine hours. I didn't want to do that, so I split from them after their second-to-last stop and headed home, making two stops along the way, intending to arrive home on the same day they did.

We camped at Stoever's Dam Park in Pennsylvania, a quick one-night stop at a county park to break up the drive to Cunningham Falls State Park in Maryland, then to Powhatan State Park and Chippokes State Park in Virginia, and finally to Oregon Inlet Campground in North Carolina. On my way back I stopped at Pocahontas State Park in Virginia and the Jonestown/Hershey KOA in Pennsylvania.

All went well and we had lots of good times, especially at Chippokes, which is right across the river from Jamestown with lots of interesting historical sites to visit, and Oregon Inlet on the Outer Banks, near Kitty Hawk and many fun shops and restaurants and other parks.

The trip home was fine, but since I was on my own I didn't do much except hang out at the campgrounds. It was late November and the weather was getting colder and I ended up staying two extra days at the Hershey KOA because of a big storm at home in New York -- my neighborhood was under 12 inches of snow, the power was out, and the local guy we pay to clear our private roads on the lake broke his plow on the heavy wet snow and the roads were impassible. So that was kind of exciting, but I was safe at the KOA. I was glad I'd decided to make my last stop a KOA instead of a state park or other campground -- it had its own little camp store and deli, propane on site, so I didn't have to worry about running out of anything, and they were very accommodating about extending my stay as long as necessary.

Late November and December: Thanksgiving was pretty low-key. We'd just gotten back from our trip a week before, neither of the nephews came, and my brother had cataract surgery the day before, so it was just the three of us and no one felt much like doing a lot of cooking or baking. So we kept it simple and easy.

For Christmas, my younger nephew and his girlfriend came. They had to go back on Christmas day, so we had Christmas dinner the day before. I brought my usual veggie enchiladas, green bean casserole, pecan pie and some vegan chocolate chip cookies I made because I couldn't remember if my nephew's girlfriend was vegetarian or vegan (turns out she's vegetarian and regular cookies would have been just fine, but the vegan cookies turned out really well and everyone liked them, vegan or not).

My biggest concern was getting presents for everyone. I'd sent for some stuff for my brother and his wife that I was satisfied with, but had no idea what to get for my nephew and his girlfriend. But as I was wrapping my brother and SIL's gifts, I ran across a pretty Waterford crystal ornament of my mom's tucked away in my box of Christmas stuff, and I thought maybe my nephew's girlfriend would like it. Then I thought, since I was giving her something old from the family, maybe I could find something for my nephew in my mom's stuff, too. I went through some bins and found an antique decanter that mom always used to keep in the china cabinet with her collection of porcelain cups and saucers. It was very pretty, with faceted edges and "Moonshine" etched in front. Don't know if it's crystal or just glass, but it's pretty old (at least 60 years) and kind of a family heirloom, so I wrapped that up for him. He seemed to appreciate it. All the presents seemed to go over well. My nephew's girlfriend was especially pleased with her ornament. It was from a collection of the Twelve Days of Christmas that Waterford put out one a year for 12 years, and the one I gave her just happened to be from the same year she was born.

And that's pretty much it for 2024.

I don't make New Year's resolutions because I never keep them anyway, but I have a few goals for the coming year. I'm most excited for BTS's reunion when they all finish their service in June. I'm determined to go and see them when/if they tour the US again if I can possibly manage it, no matter how far I have to travel or how much it costs.

As for the political situation, blah. I hate it but I'm just going to go on as best I can and try to help where possible and ignore it otherwise.

Wishing you all a Happy New Year and all the best for 2025!

He had been struggling with chronic diarrhea for the past couple of years. Every time I thought we finally had it figured out, he would do well for a few weeks and gain a little bit of weight, then the diarrhea would come back and in a week he'd lose all the weight he'd gained and and then some. We tried different meds, different foods, probiotics and B12 -- nothing kept him regular for long. He started out as a 10.5 pound cat, but gradually got so skinny his body couldn't function any more. He probably had lymphoma -- I didn't get a biopsy done when he first started having issues, because I wanted to try the meds and prescription food first, and he did well with them for a couple of months, but then he started having trouble again. Eventually he got so skinny I was afraid to put him through any procedures -- especially with his heart disease -- so he was never officially diagnosed, but the intractability of the disease combined with his worsening symptoms and uncontrollable weight loss make it likely.

The past few weeks he declined suddenly and badly. When I took him to the vet yesterday, he was so weak he could barely stand up and he was skin and bones. He only weighed 3.8 pounds -- he'd lost more than two and a half pounds in just a few weeks, when he was already skinny and couldn't afford to lose any more.

By Friday night I knew it was time, but I couldn't get a vet appointment until yesterday. So I took the time to give him lots of love and cuddles and all the Churus he wanted. It was still hard to let him go.

When I got home from the vet I found Davey cat and gave him a big hug. It will be just Davey and me for a while -- I haven't decided yet if I'll get another cat or when, but I'm very glad I had a kitty to come home to, so the house wouldn't feel so empty.

It's strange, after years of dealing with Mister's meds, 4x/day feeding schedules, and cleaning up his messes to have just one healthy, sassy, independent kitty who can live happily on two meals a day plus treats, who uses the litter box and rarely throws up (he does like to eat plastic and wood and other strange things), who never gets mad and still loves to play like a kitten.

But I miss my fussy, anxious, neurotic, shouty kitty.

SUGA movie

Saw the SUGA D-Day movie yesterday, and it was awesome, as expected! I went to at a small theater near Scranton, about an hour from my place. There was no special promotion at the theater, which was fine, I just wanted to see the movie.

I saw five or six people with light sticks. Two in particular were sitting down in front and waved their ARMY bombs all through the movie, changing the light stick's colors to match what was showing on screen at the concert. I was in the first row of the raised seats, right behind the wheelchair row, which is always my favorite spot -- it's close to the screen, nobody can block my view and it's raised enough so I don't have to crane my neck to see. Fortunately, the ARMY bombs were below my view of the screen, and only slightly distracting. Mostly I thought it was cool to see them having fun. I didn't light up my light stick key ring, but I waved it around and kept time with it.

Soon after I found my seat, a girl came and gave me this little pouch. It was dark in the theater and I couldn’t really see what it was, so I thanked her and tucked it away in my bag. Later I saw her and another girl (I am terrible at judging ages, but they were school-age, maybe 10 and 14?) handing out the pouches to other people.

Once the movie started, I forgot about it, and didn’t think of it again until after I’d gotten home. I got it out and opened it to find these lovely gifts inside: two Korean 50-won coins; a sweet little bracelet with a kitty bead (Suga is known as BTS' Little Meow Meow, and the cat is his representative emoji, so the kitty is very appropriate); and a tiny piece of Korean “Americano” candy (if you've ever watched a K-drama, you've likely seen someone drinking Americano coffee, it's very popular in South Korea). So the gifts aren't random, someone put a lot of thought into what to include.

I was so touched! I have no idea how these little favors came about, who decided to put them together and hand them out. But I love mine, and shout out to the girls in Moosic, PA who made a special day even more special!

Look what I got!

I was tempted to bring my BTS light stick (otherwise known as the ARMY bomb) along with me to the SUGA movie, but knew it would be silly -- it's a movie, not a concert, there won't be any Bluetooth concert control, and nobody's going to want lights shining in their faces in a darkened movie theater. Then I saw this BTS light stick keyring with a mini-sized ARMY bomb that actually lights up (no Bluetooth control, though, heh), small enough to stick in my bag and have with me (although I won't be flashing it around, either, at least not after the movie starts). So I ordered it.

It was coming all the way from S Korea, and estimated arrival date was after the movie showings, so I figured I wouldn't get it in time, but what the heck, it's a cool thing anyway. But it arrived yesterday! And my ticket is for the Saturday afternoon show, so I did get it in time to bring with me!

I am excite!
