CHARACTERCHARACTER NAME: Clinton Barton
SERIES: Marvel Cinematic Universe; The Avengers
CANON POINT: Just after the Battle for New York
LOSS: Loss of memories of Agent Natasha Romanoff.
ABOUT THE CHARACTER: Not much is known about Agent Clint Barton. The man takes his job seriously and cares for his comrades and higher-ups. He will do anything to achieve his mission’s objective.
When on the job, Barton is serious, calm and calculated. Being a sniper, these are his best qualities when working. He’s good as a lookout, judging things from a distance, before making a decision, but he is also very adept at making snap decisions in the heat of the moment. A prime example of this is when he shoved Director Nick Fury out of the way of Loki’s staff blast.
He’s one of S.H.I.E.L.Ds best agents, a skilled archer, assassin, and infiltrator. He’s well-disciplined and trained, most likely being one of the most deadliest people in S.H.I.E.L.Ds employ. He has a high confidence in his skills, and it would take something big to shake his resolve. The key example of this is when he’s freed from Loki’s mind-control.
This also shows that, despite being a very adept killer, he doesn’t
like doing it at all. It seems to be a necessary part of the job, and he would probably avoid it unless it was necessary, or he was ordered to.
When in the infirmary with Agent Natasha Romanoff, after he was freed, he started to ask how many people he killed, before Natasha cut him off. It’s at this point that he shows that, despite being a very dangerous individual, he still has feelings. It’s clear to see that he blames himself for being taken over by Loki, and blames himself for everything that happened on board of the Helicarrier because of the knowledge Loki gained from him whilst under his control.
He dislikes being used against his will, especially when they use him for something he doesn’t agree with. This is mostly shown when he mentioned he’d sleep better if he could put an arrow through Loki’s eye socket. This makes it clear that, if anyone got on his bad side, he would hold a very strong grudge against that person.
He also seems very capable at controlling his emotions, showing that he can concentrate them onto a single goal. Concentrating his efforts on fighting Loki’s army in New York, Clint proved that, despite not having super powers, or any other advantage other than his natural skill, he could still be a valuable ally against whatever threat was thrown at them.
Despite being able to control his emotions, there is an impression that, if angered too much, he would make a very dangerous enemy. There is evidence to say that he would probably make them suffer if they caused enough of a violation against him. Again, this is shown when he said “If I could put an arrow through Loki’s eye socket, I’d sleep better,
I suppose.” The
’I suppose’ shows that killing him would likely be the least Clint would like to do, and the most is something he wouldn’t mention.
He’s shown to have a bit of a softer side, also. When Natasha was extracting information from Loki, she mentioned that Clint had been sent to kill her but made a different call. She said she got on S.H.I.E.L.Ds radar in a bad way. It’s not expanded on exactly what happened, but the two became friends and colleagues. They have a steadfast relationship with one another, going so far as Natasha staying with him while he was recovering from Loki’s brainwashing.
Outside of his duties, Barton would likely be a lot less serious. He’s shown to have a humorous side, even when on the job, when he mentioned as an aside to Coulson when tracking Thor towards Mjolnir, “Better call it, Coulson. I’m starting to root for this guy.” From this, it’s easy to see that Clint could be a laid-back individual, but with a knack of switching from relaxed to serious quite easily.
In summary, Clint Barton is a very dangerous individual, and not a man to be messed with, however, if you stay on his, and his employers, good side, He can be a steadfast ally and friend.
ABILITIES: Whilst not having any superpowers, Clint Barton is by no means ordinary. The man is an expert archer, marksman and close-combateer. He has high strength, endurance, and stamina, is incredibly acrobatic and has a very keen eye.
He's a skilled espionage agent, an expert fighter pilot and a professional athlete and acrobat.
THIRD-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE: The hawk is in his nest…
Agent Clinton Barton has taken up his usual spot up a height, looking down on the laboratory. Boring work, usually, but it was work, nonetheless. He’s sitting, sprawled on the railings slightly, legs dangling over the edge of the lookout he’d chosen. He looks perfectly at ease…
Dr. Selvig had left the lab for a bit to get a bit of a break, as Clint sits, chin on his hands, examining the room. He was on guard detail and, whilst that usually meant standing guard on the doors, Clint could see better from a distance. He was better up in his nest, watching over the scene.
Clint had been assigned to the Project Dark base after New Mexico, and the encounter with the Asgardian, Thor. It was there he was introduced to Dr. Eric Selvig, who came to S.H.I.E.L.Ds attention at the same time. He was enlisted to help with the artefact known as the Tesseract, found when they fished Captain Steve Rogers from the ocean.
Either way, this stuff was pretty boring to Clint. He had a friendly relationship with Dr. Selvig and the other scientists, but this stuff was way above his head, and all attempts to explain it to the sniper had just been met with blank stares, so often that they had given up.
Still, he was friendly, had a bit of banter when he wasn’t up in his self-assigned post. Coulson disagreed with having Clint so far away from all the action. He disagreed, but didn’t stop him…
There’s something going on. Clint shifts, frowning, before he stands up. “Dr. Selvig, you might want to get in here. The cube’s doing something.” Barton calls into his transceiver. He puts a hand on the side-arm at his belt, wary, as the scientists return to the Cube Room.
Clint also radios out to Agents Hill and Coulson. “Sorry to wake you two, but the cube’s in test phase… No, Selvig didn’t do anything. It just activated.” He pauses, waiting for Coulson to tell him what to do over the radio, his gaze sweeping the room to take in the scene, watching for anything that could be happening…
“It’s your call, boss. If you want to get the Director in on this, I’m not going to stop you. I’m staying back, rear guard. Someone needs to watch the techies on this one.” He can see Selvig looking up at him; the scientist would know that he was talking to Coulson on this. Barton just gives him a thumbs up, a sign to continue working on it.
“It doesn’t look like it’s doing anything. No-one’s come or gone, I’ve been watching. It just… activated. Don’t know why. Selvig and his people are going to try and cut the power. Got it. Yeah, I’ll keep watch.” He cuts the feed, before calling down to the scientists.
“Keep working on it. Coulson’s bringing in Director Fury. He’ll want to know what’s going on.”
And, with that, Barton sits back down, watching the goings-on down below. He sits a little straighter, tenser, but rests his chin on his hands again as he peruses the activity below.
FIRST-PERSON JOURNAL SAMPLE: So. [There's a pause] When you get over the, y'know...
kidnapping aspect of this place, it's kinda alright. People are friendly, if a bit weird.
[The voice over the journals is relaxed and easy going.]
...Okay, very weird, but that's not a bad thing, or anything. I like weird. I work well with weird.
Still, it doesn't look like there's much to do around here. That might be a problem. Hawks are free creatures, and my spirit animal is definately a hawk.
Might just hang around the shooting range. I'm a dab hand with a bow.
INTENT: No real intent. Just think he'd be pretty good to play in this setting.
