We are almost to Christmas.

For me, this past year has been filled with challenge, determination, and perseverance.

I would like to thank those who helped me through some recent dark times. Your words got me through and helped me to believe.

“Believe” - that has been a key word for me this year. I continue to send out resumes in the hope that one of them will open the door for me to get back to work – full-time or long-term.

My wife and I recently watched “The Polar Express”. It is a very nice movie with a poignant message that is brought out in Josh Groban’s song “Believe”:

“…Believe in what your heart is saying
Hear the melody that's playing
There's no time to waste
There's so much to celebrate
Believe in what you feel inside
And give your dreams the wings to fly
You have everything you need
If you just believe…”

We must all strive to believe in ourselves and those we love.

On behalf of my wife and two boys, Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and best wishes too all of you for a safe and prosperous 2010 (wow - a new decade).

For those of you who might use Twitter, you may have noticed you can't get to it. Apparently it is being beseiged by a DDoS attack. A DDoS attack is when a web site receives so many hits (i.e. visits) to the site it makes the site unavailable. It is likely an organized attack.

It also seems to be rippling to Facebook, myspace, and other social networking sites.

Just in case anyone was wondering (or cared...LOL).

It actually made the front of CNN's web page...

Sometimes I amaze myself with my stupidity…

A few days ago I discovered that a headlight in one of my vehicles had burned out. Yesterday, I went to an auto parts store and found the correct bulbs and also got an air filter for both of my vehicles. Today, I took the time to change the filters and the bulbs, turned the headlights on – still burned out. So I swapped lights around – still burned out.

Suddenly, a startling realization hit. My vehicle, a 2001 Dodge Intrepid, had separate bulbs for low and high beams. I had efficiently changed 2 HIGH BEAM bulbs, and realized the burned out bulb was a LOW BEAM. So, back to the auto parts store, much to the amusement of the manager of the store. He said, “You have one of the few cars that has separate bulbs – and they don’t even make it clear which is which”. I then changed out the low beams and lo and behold – 4 working headlights!

And for those that asked, yes I did RTFM (Read the F***ing Manual), but even there it does not make clear which is which.

I have now marked which is which for the next time this happens – which hopefully will not be for quite a while.

As I was browsing the web this afternoon, I hit the web site of the TV stations in our state. The lead story was that someone had robbed the Salvation Army store in the town I live in.

I asked my wife to change to that TV station and the two of us watched the story with incredulity and anger on our faces.

As most of you know, the Salvation Army helps those less fortunate through donations of gently used clothing, appliances, and through monetary donations throughout the year.

I hope our local Police Department catches the culprits. They should be made to give back to the community that they robbed and then be given some jail time to think about what they have done.

I would ask those of you that can to make a donation of some kind (whether it be monetary or otherwise) to your local Salvation Army or, if they are not near you, to a charity of your choosing.

Thank you.

For those of you who may have had trouble reading some of my recent posts, a setting was changed in my Livejournal profile to make my posts "Adults Only". I do apologize for that.
I have modified the setting that controls this so the posts will be normal. I have also sent an e-mail to Livejournal asking them to check other profiles. I think when they introduced
some beta tools, the default for that option may have changed.

Let's see what they say.

It is an important day for us here in the United States. Not only do we get to vote on referendum questions and for local and state leaders, but it is time to choose a new President. It is a historic day.

For my friends in the US - if you are eligible to vote, do so. It is the best way to express how you feel about who should run our country. If you don't vote, don't complain about the direction our country goes in.

For my friends around the world - I hope that whomever is chosen as our new president will begin a healing process with your countries. In my mind, the US has made a mess of many things and become a bully.
It is time to rectify that - to reach out to our allies (and even our enemies) to make things right.

For those of you who have seen the US ABC network show "20/20", there was a story about Professor Pausch and his battle
with terminal cancer (pancreatic cancer, I believe). He wrote a book called "The Last Lecture" about his dealing with his illness.
It became a best seller, an internet sensation, and was heard at many graduations.

Prof. Randy Pausch

Professor Pausch lost his battle with his cancer @ age 47. May he rest in peace.
