New Old Computer

A friend recently gave me her old computer, an HP that seems to be about 10 years old. I don't have internet at home, so still have to work on the internet from the library. I was hoping to be able to download a few goodies from the library, so bought a flash drive. The computer told me that the "device driver" was not installed, and I looked and searched all over the computer.

I asked around a bit, but it looks like the flash drive I just bought just cannot be handled by a computer that old. So I bought some cheapie data/image/music CDs from Staples. Lol, the version of Adaptec the computer has (2.5) is not able to do anything with the CDs, though it can read from a music CD I put in, and also from the recovery disc ( I looked at the list of original programs for help, but didn't see anything likely).

Before I check out buying some floppy discs to transfer whatever from web to home PC, am I wasting my time even trying to load a wallpaper or text documents from the web? Is there a free download to get, if the floppies work, to update the Adaptec, Windows 98 or whatever?

I am mostly not that computer savvy, never having had one at home before, just using the library or occasionally using a friend's. So speak sloooowly....

Thanks.
