This Black History Month, we’re recognizing four Black Canadian nation builders – from historic trailblazers to today’s visionaries – who have helped shape Canada and inspire what’s next.
Today, we’re highlighting Willie O’Ree – a Black Canadian icon who broke barriers in hockey and helped change the sport for the better.
In 1958, he became the first Black player in the NHL, opening doors in a space where Black athletes were rarely represented. Beyond his playing career, he became a long-time advocate for inclusion and diversity, helping grow the game across Canada and North America.
His impact goes far beyond the rink – and his legacy continues to inspire Canadians today.
