I'm at the penultimate episode of Coroner's Diary and there are simply too many cinnamon rolls of the kind who die tragically. I am on melodramatic tenterhooks for the second, third and fourth couples. If it all goes too pear-shaped I am watching A Dream Within A Dream again.

In other news my copy of Hetty McKinnon's latest, Linger, has arrived. Coronation cauliflower and chickpeas is calling to me.

Question of the Day
Do you have some table items you only bring out when you entertain guests for dinner?

I picked up this question from [personal profile] dine. I like to use my precious things rather than save them for special. Otherwise why have them? If it has function, let it function. Some things though are too large for one or two person eating. I have a tin-lined copper couscoussier that is not suitable for cooking small amounts. It also looks amazing when you bring it out and put it on the table, gleaming and full of deliciousness.

Other than that there are platters, serving spoons and such that only come out when I'm feeding a few.

I'm been reading a few pages of my DW network link lately and discovered I'm not following people I thought I was following. I suspect I have accidentally unfollowed because on my current layout reply is close to the drop down list that has unsubscribe and ban user. I need an icons to the left layout.

Anyway, happy long weekend, Australians. At least those Australians who get the king's birthday holiday this week. I'm listening to the Classic 100 countdown to not-celebrate. Can we have a republic now, please?

Book meme via spiralsheep.

1. Almost everyone will recommend a book or two to read, but are there any you would tell people to avoid?

Kind of. If I understand what a person prefers to avoid and they would like to know, I will make un-recs. I'm falling about laughing at 'will recommend a book or two'.

2. If you take a book on holiday, are you more likely to take something you haven't read yet or an old favourite?

Thanks to the internet and e-books, I am never without many things to read at hand, new and old. But more on holiday reading below.

3. Do you read any genres by the season? Like horror around Halloween? Cozy mysteries in the winter? Romance in the summer?

Not by season, but if I am planning a trip somewhere new. I like to start reading fiction and non-fiction about that place and/or by local authors when I'm planning the trip and continue during the trip.

4. If you read a lot of fiction do you prefer an author who has a series with the same character(s), or do you prefer stand-alone stories?

No preference.

5. Is there a book that you wish you could read again, but experience it like it was the first time?

I regularly forget what happened in a story, so I kind of get that experience when I re-read, sometimes. I would love to read Lord of the Rings for the first time again. What magic it was for wee baby me, when all those things were new and not stalwarts of the genre I came to love.

I slept in a lot this morning, which was obviously needed but now I am up and it is a gloomy Sunday. I opened the balcony door for fresh air, but what I am getting is fresh rain! Oh dear.

The world is a bit grim, but I have music and coffee and He Who Drowned the World to read so it will go okay. Hope you are all getting through it and in a position to take care of yourselves or be taken care of.

Per previous post, I decided I needed something warm and fluffy to watch while I got on with knitting. I found a documentary called Wild Babies. Now, background, normally I avoid wildlife documentaries because you're never warned about that creature I am so phobic of I'm not writing its name and also general terrible but normal things that happen in 'the wild'. Surely, I thought, in a show called wild babies there would be none of that particular kind of invertebrate (baby squid a-ok) and surely, surely, there would be no screening of terrible things.

So, I pressed the go button. It had a good start! Many wee, fluffy adorable critters tumbled across the screen in the credits and the opening voice over.

Then the vo credit: Helena Bonham Carter.

Ummm... not an actor I associate with pleasant things but you never know.

Then a subtitle for where we were heading first: the Skeleton Coast.

...

Okay, noping out out out. You just can't trust nature documentarists. There'll be hungry birds diving on those wee baby turtles any minute.

Been grimly sad recently. Tonight I'm wondering if the reason I can't concentrate like I used to is a) menopause, b) global pandemic etc stress, c) success of fascists etc stress, d) various health issues of me, my friends and my family, e) the keep calm and carry on drug (pry it from my cold dead hands) or f) all of the above.

I've recently lost two regular relied upon things in my life and very much ignoring the really it's gone already loss of the third. Anyway, I organised a treat for myself, I'm only required to make one simple thing for Christmas lunch and work is over for the year. So, you know, swings and roundabouts.

On Masterchef Professionals this year there's a contestant who looks and sounds like an extra scruffy Dan Radcliff. His name is James and I've been amusing myself to pieces thinking about a marauders era Masterchef AU with the youngs as the chefs and the Hogwarts staff as the judges, guest chefs and critics.

Although, clearly Voldemort is Jay Rayner.

Anyway, work is organising an in-person half day in the next town over for the end of the month. What part of one in every one hundred people in our city have COVID are they missing? I still haven't seen a lot of my friends in person and you want me to take a risk on work people? Fuck that noise.

I'm seconding this request for people to put their old stories on AO3, and not just the 10 and 15 year old stories. Upload the 20 and 25 year old stories. I can tell you for certain that people still want to read The Sentinel and Smallville and on the odd occasion, The Professionals.

Wow, but it is harrowing to post in a community. If I make a html mistake in my own journal: whatevs! In another journal: calamity!

So, a lot has happened since I last posted in February. I don't know how to even begin to summarise. Cut so you can skip past unhappy talk if you need to. )
Currently I'm consuming fanworks and being made happy by the enemies to brothers vibe of Handsome Siblings (they had me at 'separated at birth/raised as enemies'). I'm up to episode 28 of 44 and wishing for a Killjoys-style sword lady and her sister-wives happy ending. Sadly, I anticipate it is definitely not to be.

I have finished knitting a cardigan while it is still cold enough to wear. (\o/)

I hope you are all doing okay.

Well
