I guess it's high time to make a sticky post.
On a personal note, I'm a very science oriented person (she/her). I was a foot/ankle surgeon until an injury ended that. Now I'm a biomedical professor in a small college. I've been writing in fandoms since 1977 and active in group fandoms since the early 80s with Elfquest and Pern back in the paper zine days.
If I had to pick my latest fandom right now (2024) it would be The Owl House and Hazbin Hotel. That along with Prodigal Son, Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel the series and Fullmetal Alchemist make up the bulk of my AO3/FFN offerings. They're the ones I write meatier stories for.
I've done smaller stories, flash fic and drabbles in SO MANY fandoms, Star Trek (my forever fandom) of all flavors, Star Wars, The X-Files, Lucifer, Doctor Who, Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries, and a crap ton of anime especially Saiyuki, D. Gray-Man and Blue Exorcist among others.
I write from PG to explicit, het, LGBT, poly, vanilla through BDSM. I write some dark stuff as well but that's what tags are for, right?
In addition to fandom, I write original fiction and have been published professionally for over a decade now. I write LGBT under one pen name and have started branching out into YA and other things under a different name. I write mostly SF/F, urban fantasy, steampunk and horror. I would love to write mysteries but my concentration is off for that right now. I'm always on the look out for alpha and beta readers (and happily will do exchanges or if you're in the mood to be part of a low pressure critique group that exchanges once every six weeks, PM me). I do a writing post every sunday (usually)
I'm big into history/historical traveling, gardening, hiking (currently on hold hopefully not forever after destroying my knee) and cooking. I'm sure there's probably more that could go here but this is a good introduction to me.
Blanket transformative works policy Anything of mine on AO3/FFN (under this same user name) need you to ask me to use it. Often I am thrilled to say yes but please NO feeding it into any of the AI things out there please. You want to podfic it? Great. Make art for it, love you forever. Moodboard it, yay. Make a play list? go for it. Feed it into AI, nope. Just ask, I'm easy to work with. Also I'm planning to dip my toe into Squidgeworld too this year as a place for my fiction.
today was needed
Feb. 21st, 2026 11:20 pmI was going to shop around Jackson but once I got there apparently everyone in a 100 mile radius showed up. It was hilariously crowded so I cut my day in half. I did get to the coffee house and like the jackass I am saw one open table and three people in line so I threw my shit on that table got all comfy then got in line. I wrote. I finish that chapter I've been trying to finish for a month. I started a new story. I might share it tomorrow to see if it feels like it would draw you in.
I couldn't recycle today because it looked like none of the 8 dumpsters had been emptied since I was there last week. People were trying to toss stuff a top the mountains. I noped out of that, hit the library and Kroger (I guess this snow tomorrow is going to be worse than I heard?) which was packed to the gills.
I also managed to hit Tractor Supply. I now own six black ducklings and a dozen of mixed peeps. Okay not really but probably only because I love to travel and can't take care of farm animals. I did get onion sets though and my brush on a stick so I can clean the kitchen floor. This is a Liberman (like my broom) 15$. All the other brands were 40$ and up. I'm like dudes, it's a brush on a stick. I can buy two of this one for one of yours and yours didn't seem considerably better.
There was a handmade lemonade 'food' truck in the parking lot. I got the holy water lemonade (strawberry, peach, something I'm forgetting and blue curacao and I nearly drank it all in one go I ate the lemons in it to. Have I mentioned I love lemons? (bought another half dozen of them today)
I saw a facebook announcement that the Bourbon City steampunk already has their panels filled up and I didn't get an email so I guess I ain't one of them. What sucks is I have the tickets but its on graduation. BUT they're also doing a writing thing so I am going to try that too. Who knows. I might just tell my bosses I have a convention. Do they need to know what kind?
And I am already sending my panel ideas to the Gettysburg steampunk thing. I mean I left it too long on Bourbon but it's early days for Gettysburg.

Fannish Friday
Feb. 20th, 2026 09:16 pmThe most exciting things that happened today is my knee is sad and I can't find my brace.
Rocket barfed in the computer room
And I found out how much of a difference Kerry Gold makes when you're making a butter-based sauce. It transformed my alfredo sauce. So damn good. Worth the expenseif you're going to do something butter forward.
And here are the fannish recs. Nothing from me. I've been stuck on my Hazbin WIP and finally edited a chapter that's been sitting on my to-do stuff and it's been a chapter I posted over a month ago...fantastic. How did I fuck that up and how has it been a month since I posted (oh right 3 sentence ficathon and half a moon, fun but diverting.)
I'm also trying to decide if I start a new novel or combine it with an idea I already have.

The return of thankful thursday
Feb. 19th, 2026 10:59 pmMostly because I am out of communities to rec.
I am thankful tonight wasn't worse. It was scary. I was walking out of the kitchen with a full glass of water. My bad knee buckled. I caught myself before I was all the way down. The water nearly hit my laptop. It's okay. I'm okay. The knee and ankle are swelling. Not happy about this. I wanted to hike this weekend. I had even talked to the wildlife prof and she said I can go with her when she's free (I'm not really able to go alone.)
This makes me very sad. I can't get this leg stronger but I have hope. Yes I do.
Because you know why? I think I said it yesterday but it bears repeating. My water aerobics class is a go. Send up a little well wish for me that I don't hurt myself. But this is my third initiative that has gone through at work and I'm proud of myself.
I'm also thankful that for once MOST of the students I contacted about not passing actually contacted me for help. I want so much to see this. I might not be able to help them but we can try. One's mother (a coworker) reached out too to tell me how upset her child was and how nervous they were to come talk to me. I reached out and we talked and I think that it will help.

Feb. 18th, 2026 11:05 pmBut first HAPPY BIRTHDAY
seta_suzume

Hope it was a great one.
Had my virtual psychiatrist visit. She lit up when she saw me. Your office is so cool! Look at your plants! And quizzes me on the jungle behind me.
You look so much better in just a month (which is ironic since apparently both me and my brother woke up exhausted. We're both surrounded by flu so I think I have been exposed but my vaccine is kicking in) You look like you're doing better OFF your anti depressants than you were on. She let me choose what I wanted to do. See you no drugs in 2 months because in the year I've been on the meds my blood pressure has shot up. She knew that but hearing other symptoms she said you're getting an EKG and taking it to your pcp. Yep, fair, good idea. I'm a little worried honestly that the coughing stuff isn't a hiatal hernia but rather cardiac. I want to chase this shit down.
It's Ash Wednesday. It's been since forever since it mattered much. Years ago I gave up the idea of suffering to be more like Jesus. I have in the past did charity work and/or donation. And then I saw this. I see how much HATE this Pope gets not for some of the shit the church has pulled. No, because he keeps reminding Maga what Jesus actually said and he is pissing them off. I like this and while I can't promise to keep my mouth off some of the shit stuff MAGA does I CAN give up negative self talk and see if I can see my own self in a better light. If we can love ourselves, we do better in the world I think.

What I Just Finished Reading:
Heavy Vinyl Complete Collection by Carly Usdin - really fun sapphic comic full of girl power and 90s vibes and lovely art
What I am Currently Reading:
The Final Problem - mystery set in the 60s (no progress because I couldn't get the netgalley app to download. FINALLY did and so far it's not freezing up_
Dark Life - YA book (so far so good)
Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier - She's a fucking passive twit and yet I don't hate this
Check Please sticks and scones - had to find one for my favorite winter olympic sport. Okay that is NOT hockey but that's what the library had and the first book was cute.
What I Plan to Read Next: This Is How You Lose the Time War, La Grand Familia, Zombie Day Care and This Is How You Lose the Time Lord
Luna Park history

Vaguely disheartened
Feb. 17th, 2026 11:48 pmI spent all night grading exams (so no time for fandom tuesday) That's not what disheartened me. I had six people get 100%. I had six get less than 50% but I feel more like that's on them. The majority of the class did well. We'll see if the ones who didn't do well come talk to me.
No what disheartened me was the young lady with the Charlie Kirk god bless t-shirt on. I do not engage in talking with students about politics (the closest I get is my stance on anti-science and vaccination which is not surprising given what I teach) never have not even before Ohio made it more or less illegal for me to challenge a student's beliefs.
But it DOES sadden me to see a group of people prop up someone who is/was actively hurting them. You want to scream do you realize Charlie Kirk would not want you in my class? That he said women's brains weren't good enough, smart enough to handle it. Women like me are a waste of space, that he advocated that given women the vote was the worst thing we did.
I want to ask what DO you get out of this. Please tell me.
sigh.
BUT!!!!! I do have good news! 13 people want my water aerobics class. Unless someone on the wellness committee votes it down it should be a go after spring break. I'm so happy. I'm debating going to yoga tomorrow (or again because it's very hard on me)

Had to get away for the day
Feb. 16th, 2026 11:19 pmI mean I should have stayed and cleaned or something but like most of the eastern/midwestern US I've been snowed in for weeks and it wasn't snowy today. It was supposed to be in the 60s. It was not. It was grey and cold but otherwise a good day. I really need to find OTHER things to do in Huntington other than shop because I have it to such an art, it takes me longer to drive than do anything else.
I did get myself a Hillbilly hot dog. Which one, they ask as I stand there in my Mothman shirt. Mothman, naturally.
My pull list at the comic book store is done. I'm almost relieved. Found a new one but we'll see. They did have one Hazbin Hotel funko. Vaggi. I looked around for Angel for my friend's daughter. (I personally find Funkos horrifying) Nada.
I picked up a 100$ overpriced Christmas wreath at Michaels for the 25$ it was probably worth.
And then I got mad at Macy's. I look around. It's been redone. I can't see the plus sizes. I ask.
Oh we're not carrying plus sizes any more.
Murder or shock or something must have showed in my face and she babbles. 'oh wait there's still some.'
She points to two fucking racks in the back. What the actual fuck, Macy's? I know the brand is struggling but I HATE buying clothes online. You have to waste all those resources packaging it, gas in shipping it only to find out it doesn't fucking fit or the fabric is a nightmare and have to re-waste all those resources sending it back and most plus size catalogues DO NOT have free shipping/returns such as Roaman's and Woman Within.
This store's ground level floor had been one quarter plus size just a few months ago. I DO NOT know if this is just this store is all of Macy's doing it(I was just at the one back home with it was more like half was plus). This makes NO sense. Why in the world if you're struggling do you wipe out a huge chunk of your patronage. And especially in Huntington WV. I don't know who/why someone does research on the fattest town in America but it's been Huntington WV more times than it's not.
I'm hoping it's just them like the fucking Nordstrom Rack in Columbus OH. I know my friend, JK says Nordstrom carries plus sizes in Boston but Nordstrom did the same thing in Columbus. Went from a full section to a small section to 2 racks to nothing. Kohl's has a pathetic plus section (mostly work out clothes, nothing I could wear to work) Guess I'm back to shopping JC Penny's after 20 years and whatever bizarre shit Tj Maxx has.
Speaking of that, I went to TJ Maxx/Homegoods which was being worked on and I forgot to look for the two damn things I went there for but got more woodened utensils and another sauce pot (there are reasons but they are bad ones) and all kinds of fun goodies, mostly from Italy one of which JK would probably fight me in the store over, cannoli filled with pistachio cream and some whiskey and strawberry margarita filled chocolates, Faze(?) from Finland. Both are so good I was eating them like a feral raccoon in the car if there had been more I would have went back for them.
It's music monday 30 weeks of music. This week's prompt is 14 you enjoy that’s in a different language Share your faves too. I know Suzume will be here with some but I'm waiting on my kPop friends to shine too.

Writerly Ways
Feb. 15th, 2026 11:33 pmI've been thinking about writing hard to write emotional states, beyond say the actual words we can find in the emotional thesaurus (which is a great resource) How do we carry forward these states. I'm not sure I know the answer but I do have some examples.
One of the harder ones to write is naivety. So often naive ends up reading as stupid. That's not the same thing. two examples Mrs. de Winter from Rebecca and Charlie Morningstar from Hazbin Hotel. Both of these ladies I believe are meant to be naive (especially Charlie)
They are similar in how this naivety is shown. They make mistakes but they don't learn from them. The nameless Mrs de Winter is a passive twit without a brain in her head (which is a different problem) She is meant to be young and naive and caught up in the manipulations of older, vicious people but at what point do you learn from this and move on. 250 pages is almost it for her (which she immediately turns around and nearly ends up dead but that's another story as well) Without a character learning and moving on, becoming less naive you end up with a character who comes off dumb.
I see this again with Charlie. She is a sheltered princess of hell. In S1 she is naive but she seems to learn. Instead of continuing that, in S2 she digresses. She doesn't learn, worse she is so naively convinced she's right she listens to no one and then lashes out at them when it blows up in her face. This bad naive representation and it has had a high cost. The character is getting tons of hate and many fans left over how bad she came across.
Conversely, Luz from The Owl House is naive. I mean it's portal fic and she has a whole world she has no knowledge of. Like the other two ladies, she makes mistakes. But she learns from them. She apologizes when people get inadvertently hurt because of her lack of knowledge. And maybe this is the difference. Luz uses her naivety as a place to start learning. She's not a passive nitwit. She's not a wellmeaning person who refuses to own her mistakes.
I don't know. What about you? What would make/break a naive character for you? How do you handle one?

She apologizes when people get inadvertently hurt because of her lack of knowledge. And maybe this is the difference. Luz uses her naivety as a place to start learning. She's not a passive nitwit. She's not a wellmeaning person who refuses to own her mistakes.
I don't know. What about you? What would make/break a naive character for you? How do you handle one?

It's been an emotional day
Feb. 14th, 2026 11:19 pmI got to sleep in, I received the most lovely collage card from
stonepicnicking_okapi (thank you!!) for the holiday (I was crap at sending any out) I went to the coffee shop to have a chocolate covered strawberry mocha for the holiday fearing it would be packed. It wasn't. yay.
I sat down to write. First up, I sent my vampire story out for consideration and then went looking in my blog and that's when the bottom fell out. I was thinking about reaching out tonight to
spikedluv because I haven't heard from her in nearly two weeks and I usually hear from her daily. Her mother was in extremely failing health and I thought maybe she had passed and it's always weird with the do I reach out now or do I wait a bit thing.
And then I ran across
kingstoken's blog to let us know
spikedluv had passed away. I was stunned to say the least, gutted. I couldn't quite take it in. Someone had posted in Spiked's last blog entry
here about her death and her obituary. It was sudden and I am going to miss her. She was a big supporter of me (sent me lovely things when I was hospitalized), loved talking writing and had just gotten into Murder, She Wrote and was happy to have someone to talk to about it with.
So I was pretty much sad the rest of the day and the parentals didn't help. Dad can't be wrong. About anything. Ever. It was the dumbest conversation about the youtube algorithm and then mom called me back to tell me about a show she thought I might like. We're not on the phone 60 seconds and he's in the background screaming at her to shut up he's trying to watch his show (which he could just fucking pause and he knows this) this is the man who will give you stink eye if you even dare sneeze when he's watching tv but thinks NOTHING of coming in when you're watching a show and talking to you so you can't. She hung up on me to go scream back at him.
Things I learned today both Dracula (1931) and Silence of the Lambs were both released on Valentine's Day and Svengoolie is showing the former tonight. Why do I love both of these movies so?

On the mend
Feb. 12th, 2026 10:58 pmThe eye barely hurts and the swelling is down enough that I can open my eye. It's blurry still but getting better.
I will NOT be doing
fandomtrumpshate this year. I missed that the sign up was basically 10 days, no other warning after the first and I was too busy with my pro stuff but you know what I am okay with that. I can bid on people to help out and that is one less fan thing to distract me from stuff I get paid to do. I feel more relief than disappointment.
In the good news department The Owl House lives again in graphic novel form. I'm super excited for this
Here's the fandom meme I've been wanting to do. I got this from [Unknown site tag] who mentioned there are two versions of this meme: one where you post the FIRST line/s of the FIRST posted fic of each month and one where you post the FIRST line/s of ALL the fics you've posted in a year. While I am making this a fannish 50 celebrating ME and my contributions to fandom (which I think we all should do from time to time) But since I will be here til next week trying to do ALL my stories, I shall go with the first story. Enjoy. Read if you're so moved.
January - Why Do Fools Fall in Love Hazbin Hotel, Angel adored the flying pole Husker had installed on his stage.
February Where Fashion Sits Hazbin Hotel, There’s more to her than anyone thinks but, in most ways, being underestimated suits Velvette just fine. (ha this is one of my
halfamoon stories from last year
March Sisterhood Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The thing about being a Watcher was Dawn never knew what would come next.
April Ephemeral Hazbin Hotel, Angel heard them ‘whispering’.
May Never Hazbin Hotel, “Are you really sure you wanna know, sweets?” Angel drawled to Charlie, as he squirmed in his seat next to Husk on the couch.
June Somebody’s Eyes The Owl House Edalyn folded up the door into its briefcase.
July Tear Up This Town Hazbin Hotel, He should have known it would end like this.
August Hurt So Good Hazbin Hotel, Angel stretched his legs out in front of him on his bar stool. NSFW
September Pushing Up the Ante Hazbin Hotel, This was supposed to be a friendly game of poker, something he’d tossed out there without thinking it through at the last overlord meeting.
October The Porn Star Murders Hazbin Hotel, “Thank you for calling me.” Rosie’s flat tone sent a shiver up Angel’s spine.
November Someone in the Dark Hazbin Hotel, Husk leaned on the bar, pain lancing through his back.
December Forget Our Memories, Forget Our Possibilities Hazbin Hotel, Dear Husk,
I’m sorry for everything.
Now back to watching my mystery still wishing that John Bacchus would disappear. Today he brings misogyny, islamaphobia and racism. Whee. (the saving grace is Gently takes it out of him every time he does this and I've been told he gets better. Hope that is soon)

So I managed to score an emergency visit to my eye doctor. He doesn't think my left eye is infected. However, it has inflitrative corneal-conjunctivitis. Whee. Basically my eyeball decided it didn't want a contact in it and threw a tantrum. (I've had this once before in college a billion years ago) The cornea isn't damaged but the inflammatory response is SO severe right now that my eyeball is so swollen I can barely open the lid and there is so much fluid IN the cornea (plus white blood cells) that I'm unable to see through it. He made me read the letters on the eyechart. Right eye, 20/40 (that's as good as my vision gets), left eye, are there even lines of letters? I can barely see a smear of something that might be black so even 20/200 is beyond my eyes ability right now. I have a second steroid eyedrop that is also antibiotic as well (just in case) Not allowed to wear a contact for pretty much a month. In the meantime the eye is just over there weeping all day, the color of a tomato and scared students.
I did have to go to give that exam, the easiest I will give. 2 got 100%, 1 passed, 3 failed. Guess we're going to have a talk about time management, sports vs academia, come talk to me PLEASE come talk to me and that yes Cs get degrees but they DO NOT get you into grad school usually. (this is my I wanna go to grad school class).
The good news today was it was 10 degrees hotter than expected and yes most of the ice is gone off the parking lot so that's good.
I need to get my story out so I'm preserving what's left of my vision for that. No fun fannish 50 stuff but here's the reading at least.
What I Just Finished Reading:
When the Moon Hits Your Eye - meh
Parable of the Sower graphic novel adaptation of the Octavia Butler classic. I forgot how dystopic this was, not to mention the cringeworthy age gap between the MC (18) and her lover (57).
What I am Currently Reading:
The Final Problem - mystery set in the 60s (for some reason ALL my netgalley arcs are freezing up my kindle app. I'm going to have to try and redownload a lot of these using the netgalley app which annoys me
Dark Life - YA book (so far so good)
Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier - okay I'm at the point of thinking Maxim isn't much better than Heathcliff, NOT a good place to be
Heavy Vinyl - graphic novel for the sapphic comic prompt on popsugar
What I Plan to Read Next: La Grand Familia Zombie Day Care and This Is How You Lose the Time Lord
Luna Park history - it was an amusement park in Pittsburgh around 1910.

Days that make you want to cry
Feb. 10th, 2026 11:33 pmIt started out well. Students showed up, did what they're meant to and meeting a prospective student went well.
and then the day fell off a cliff. I was insanely busy.
then I can't find the agars I need to my research students. And when I finally did I don't have the budget for this. sigh.
Then the roof started leaking. Everywhere. I mean everywhere. every lab. every classroom. people who building flat roofs in a snowy area should have their balls kicked repeatedly
My building has issues before this. Got an email. We need a list of what needs fixed in your lab. by tomorrow. well thanksI
Then the online stuff stopped working again just like last year
Then I was reminded my first thought today was I wish I was retired or at least I never did my sabbatical because it was a taste of retirement
Came home. everything is now ice because it was 60 and all the snow is gone but the ice was too thick for that. Looking forward to my death tomorrow
I haven't been wearing my contacts lately because I can't see to read any more and since I read a lot all day it's not worth the reading glasses headaches. Had them in today. Was doing great. Took them out around 7 without a half hour my eye was beet red and I haven't been able to keep it open for nearly 4 hours. I have NO idea what happened. The contact came out easily. it feels more like it rolled up under my eyelid. Flushed it with both my steroid drops and saline but nope. Going to bed early and hope this heals up overnight. Do not want pink eye. Do not want to go to urgent care tomorrow.
Was going to do a cool writing meme but since it feels like someone is removing my eyeball with sandpaper

Feb. 9th, 2026 11:02 pmI decided to buy the professor price tickets to the Bourbon City Steampunk in Louisville KY in May. It's the same weekend as graduation. I also put in to do 2 lectures (one I have done since it was my sabbatical and one I shall have to pull forth from my ass) Wish me luck
Today I did find a phone number for recollection clothing and I shall be calling about my dress I've never seen (probably friday as it's the next time I have time) I didn't call United Health Care today because my phone was being a dick.
I did call this collection company knowing it almost couldn't possibly be for me. I haven't been in that kind of mess in years but Penny Williams (the other pain in my ass) who had my telephone number in the early 00s STILL gives it out to avoid collection agencies. This time it was for some man I never heard of.
Today was 20 degrees colder than anticipated.
it's music monday 30 weeks of music. This week's prompt is 13 has a really good music video. Share your faves too.
( It's going to be the 1980s all the way and you know I can't pick just one )
here's the whole prompt list

Writerly Ways
Feb. 8th, 2026 11:00 pmI was listening to this the other day about endings
And had several thoughts: 1. I suck at ending things. I never want to say goodbye to the characters. If I don't finish it I have to say goodbye. But that's not the problem mentioned above. That's for people who finish things
2. Have I been guilty of any of them?
3. I might be guilty. My 1980s monster hunter toes the line for the unearned happy ending. Maybe. Sort of.
It's hard to talk about it without spoiling the ending and it probably IS something that would be better if a beta reader looked at I could discuss it with them.
So why am I worried? there are multiple monster in this (maybe too many, that's a problem for another time). One monster is there at the end but it also did the work for the heroes and I'm wondering is that a good pay off? Dan and Howell (the two characters with issues that need to be resolved) get to their ending so there's that. It's probably not as bad an ending as I worry it is.
How about you? Have you worried about your endings?

I am struggling to do the declutter thing but I did get the top of the jewelry box cleaned off and untangled about a dozen necklaces. Also realized the jewelry box on top the big jewelry box (I love jewelry so I have lots) was empty. It's now filled with anime fandom pins. I need to find a display for them.
This whole day seemed to slip past me in a very unsatisfying way. So I have little to report so have science Saturday

Sending one up for my Guardian Angel
Feb. 6th, 2026 11:09 pmI woke to zero no snow. It was due in at 2 AM. It starts instead exactly at 930 but friday is now a half day for me. I leave at noon. In those 2 1/2 hours it had snowed about 3-4 more inches. I can't see the road in town. Worse, I can't see it on the major highway but traffic is moving...until 1 1/2 miles from my place. Ahead of me I see two 18 wheelers skid, jack knife and bump into each other. I pump the brakes and naturally I'm not stopping. Worse, the 18 wheeler next to me also can't stop and he begins to jack knife. Luckily I DO stop without hitting anyone or skidding out. The 18 wheeler stops without taking me out.
No one behind me hits me. I'm like well a) glad I wasn't crammed and hopefully that stays that way b) I'm gonna be here forever c) I forgot my ereader. I call my parents to have something to do and then realize after dad says 'go grade something.' oh right I DID bring 6 folders of grading to do. that kept me busy for the next hour and 10 minutes. The truck drivers came back to be sure we were all okay. So no one was hurt. the big tow trucks come and the road is opened on one side and immediately the chucklefuck in the pick up behind me starts BLARING his horn at us. Dude, the cop is still in the road. When he says we can go we will.
I finished that vampire story about 800 words over. I might leave it that way because they said they'll read a little over and that's not that much.
I wrote something for

Curious but don't want to be ghoulish
Feb. 5th, 2026 10:40 pmWhen I came home today the ambulance is over all the parking places (I'm now on the ice floe wondering if I'm going to work tomorrow after all). No one was about, no doors open so I don't know who they were here for but we have a lot of 70+ people here. I hope they'll be okay.
My nursing students gave me hope today. They did really well on the micro test for the most part. Out of 37 less than 5 failed. I'm happy with that.
Nearly finished my vampire story.
Speaking of vampires, let me do Tuesday's fannish 50 tonight. I found, by accident, a station showing Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I wanted to talk about her for
halfamoon which I just don't have time to write for, not with my deadlines. Sigh. I WILL do at least one more but I'm on the struggle bus.
But it occurred to me watching now almost 30 years later (OMFG HOW) that it really hits different than it did then. I always maintained that Joss Whedon wasn't the champion of women he pretended to be back then but I wasn't believed much. I've said this before. I just watched the last few episodes of S3 and the beginning of S4. I know that Xander was meant to be Whedon's avatar which is weird. He's rather incel coded for one but that aside, Xander was never a stand up guy to me. I was also struck about how many age-difference couples there were. I can almost look past Angel (and Spike) as immortals but while the age gap between Wes and Cordy wasn't ridiculous, we don't take too kindly to a mid 20s man trying to date a 17 year old (oh 18 years old, how many times have we heard them screaming that on this show, with her, with COnnor, etc) even in the prom a lot of the dates looked way older than the random girls. Sure that could be bad casting.
Then I remember we now know that they had to protect Michelle Trachenberg from being in the same room with Whedon. Amber Heard told me herself about the pressures put on her.
So do you have any older fandoms that feel different now?
While we're talking about shows, I'm trying to get into a new one, Inspector George Gently. Okay it's not new but new to me. It's interesting but I have never hated a character more than I do in this, at least not in a long time. If I thought Troy was bad in Midsomer Murders, he's a Woke snowflake in comparison to the sergeant in this, Bacchus is frigging awful. Yeah it's set in the mid 60s. I don't expect him to be LGBT friendly. But he's misogynistic, xenophobic and worse, a bully. He uses his job to bully people he doesn't like the Gently has called him out more than once. I'm like either give this man a redemption arc, kick him to the curb or maybe I just need to give up.

Insurance!?!
Feb. 4th, 2026 11:04 pmWhich is better title than Rocket is a shit (but he is) So I called my bank. They called both phones...to sell me INSURANCE!?! I was too stunned to say anything other than what? Oh all kind but health. WHY would you not have just said that in the message? I hardly slept last night thinking I was hacked and cleaned out because you left me two messages on two phones to call you.

It's a beautiful snow on my road. It was really pretty, at least to me. And then I got to the top of my hill (in the opposite direction of the hill I'm looking up for this picture) and the accident is still there. An 18 wheeler jackknifed and went over the guard rails. That metal plow on asphalt noise I heard must have been the guard rails failing. It was still there 14 hours later when I went to work. Luckily the cab seems to be whole so hopefully the driver wasn't too badly hurt.

It's not a great pic but there was a whole crew up there and I didn't want to seem ghoulish.
And Rocket IS a shit. He wanted out this morning. I tried to put him back in when I left. He refused and ran. Fine you'll be in the snow for hours buddy. I come racing in because I needed to do something in Jackson and then had a faculty meeting. I'm sitting here on Teams after Rocket races inside He immediately jumps in the litter, throwing it everywhere and poops. Well then. I guess he's decided that he likes to poop in a box and make me clean it (after 4 years of hating that box) or more likely he can scratch thru the ice to poop.
What I Just Finished Reading:
Cooking with Monsters - a graphic novel about monster hunting chefs.. ha. It wasn't bad.
What I am Currently Reading:
When the Moon Hits Your Eye - weird and I'm not sure I like it
The Final Problem - mystery set in the 60s
Dark Life - YA book (so far so good)
The Parable of the Sower graphic novel (this is not the right time for this dystopia but if fulfills a reading prompt)
Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier - liking t his better than I expected.
What I Plan to Read Next: La Grand Familia Zombie Day Care and something by Alison Bechdel about being superhuman. Oh joy an exercise memoir. Nearly done.
Luna Park history - it was an amusement park in Pittsburgh around 1910. Mostly interested because it feels like a place to set a story. I mean a lion escaped from it and ate a woman.
And have I mentioned that I'm doing the American Cancer Society February readathon. You can see more about it here on facebook.

A whole host of DNW
Feb. 3rd, 2026 11:45 pmToday was fine and the writer's virtual meet up on Discord was fire but there was some really unpleaasant things today
For one, it snowed nearly 10 straight hours. There was so much salt on the roads that it wasn't sticking there much but we did get a few more inches. It was a gentle snow though, so very pretty.
But right before my afternoon class started, I thought I heard my phone in my office but I was down the hall talking to a coworker. I didn't have time to look at it. By the time class was over and I got home it was nearly 5. I saw there was a message on my land line phone. It was this collection agency that didn't autofill the name or the case number and I did call them a couple weeks ago when they did that and there was no viable phone number. I doubt it's for me but I DO want to know what it is.
But also on there was a call from my bank. Turns out they called my cell too. It's a real phone for my bank. My bank called BOTH my phones. OMG. WHY? We all know that it's not for anything good and I have to wait until tomorrow to ask after it. God I hope I wasn't cleaned out by a hacker.
Then just before seven I hear a metallic noise outside. I figured it was the blade of a plow. But as I'm talking to my parents a half hour later I check my cell to see if they canceled tomorrow. Turns out that was a crash where my road meets the highway and I'm cut off. I didn't see anything so I'm assuming it's opened now. DOn't know if anyone was hurt.
I did put in for money for my work con. I could go to that Mexican all inclusive I went to last year for two weeks for what this costs. Sigh. And I guess I'm to pay for an uber to get from the airport tp the con hotel but it's like 24 miles and no one has a shuttle. When I put in for a shuttle it said it was 385 and showed and SUV. I checked renting a car and it was the same cost so I'm assuming if I want to get there I have to rent a car or pay for uber (which I've never done since we don't have any here)
