Partners

Im not exactly sure this is the best place for it, but I was wondering if there are any ways to ensure that partnered programming projects go well, especially on a deadline. I am sure there are steps I could have taken to make this last one better, but i was wondering how everyone else deals with randomly assigned partners, some of which may be more competent in the area you are working on, others not.
