another ridiculously simple question (or two)

1. I now have the basic shell style thing going (thanks especially to Amazon_Lori)on but how do I compare what the user inputs to values held by certain variables so that it actually does something.
UPDATE: I FIGURED THIS ONE OUT JUST AS I POSTED THE QUESTION.

2. System Calls: how do you implement them?
