Hi! & I could use some suggestions.
New listener, new caller, new programmer (maybe). I need to teach myself the theory of programming and code writing and I could use some suggestions for books. I have to teach myself enough to get through the rest of this semester and the next. I won't be able to take a formal class until summer. I don't even know where to begin. My last programming class was in pascal about 18 years ago.
Here is my situation: I'm a graduate student in forestry (tree geek). My specialty is remote sensing. My problem is that my major advisor is a programmer. I am dealing with datasets that are huge and would be more easily calculated upon and manipulated using "a little bit of code." He will spend 3 hours writing and debugging a small program that will do what would take me 7 days to do. Usually it is taking an excel spreadsheet and performing some math and reorganizing the answers.
I am also in the unenviable position of needing Matlab for graphing certain things. I am jealous of his coding prowess and need to get enough skills so that I can at least follow what he is talking about and be able to read his code and have a clue about what the program is doing to my data.
Any suggestions?
