Your home for everything artistic

In the world of photography, lighting is everything. While studio strobes have long been the go-to for professionals, many enthusiasts and even seasoned shooters are increasingly turning to speedlights for their versatility and convenience. But what makes speedlights a compelling alternative?

First and foremost, speedlights are incredibly portable. Unlike bulky studio strobes that require heavy stands and power packs, speedlights are compact, lightweight, and easily fit into a camera bag. This means you can take them anywhere—on location shoots, outdoor sessions, or spontaneous street photography—without breaking a sweat.

Another advantage is their quick setup and ease of use. With a few simple adjustments, you can get the perfect lighting on the spot. Many speedlights also support TTL (through-the-lens) metering, allowing for automatic exposure adjustments, which is a huge time-saver when you’re working in unpredictable environments.

Speedlights also offer greater flexibility. They can be triggered wirelessly, giving you the freedom to position them creatively around your subject. Whether you’re bouncing light off ceilings, walls, or diffusing it through modifiers, speedlights can adapt to a variety of lighting styles. Plus, many models support high-speed sync, enabling you to shoot at wider apertures even in bright conditions.

While studio strobes still have their place for high-volume shoots and controlled environments, speedlights provide a practical, versatile alternative for everyday photography. They empower you to be more spontaneous and creative, capturing beautiful images wherever inspiration strikes.

In the end, choosing between speedlights and strobes depends on your style and needs. But if you’re looking for a lightweight, adaptable lighting option, speedlights might just be the perfect addition to your gear.

If you think of freelance service, especially on the mirco-tasking level, you probably think about websites like Fiverr, Upwork, People Per Hour and similar platforms. While each of these have their own pluses, they can also come with some serious challenges.

Some such challenges include challenges dealing with the platform’s regulations and hidden or surprise fees for both the freelancer and the buyer as well.

In the hopes to solve this problem, at least on a small scale, the site FreelanceZone was founded earlier this month,

If you have a service to offer or are looking for creative services for any need, you should consider checking it out today!

As anyone who has read this blog for any substantial amount of time knows, I am a writer. My writing generally consists of poetry and articles. Once in a while though, I venture into writing song lyrics, often parodies and other times more serious content but almost always inspired by the melody of an existing song. Midway through last year, I decided to write something based on the classic Christmas song “Hark, The Herald Angels Sing.”

Well, the next thing, of course, would be to sing it. The only problem is, that singing is not even close to my skill set. Sure, I think I sound like a more toned down version of Neil Diamond when i hear myself as I sing. But, when I hear what I really sound like, it’s more like something between the voices of “Screech” from the 90s teen show “Saved By The Bell” and the character “Pete” on the comedy series “Ghosts.” If you are unfamiliar with either of the references, consider yourself lucky.

So, I went out and did what any lyricist who can’t sing would do, I looked for someone to do the job. In the past, given my general lack of financial resources, I have explored free AI tools to generate vocals. The problem here is that they generally feel like they are missing a certain quality or authenticity. And more often than not, they don’t run out as expected.

So, I went to the mecca of freelance service providers known as Fiverr. It was there that I found the outstanding talent of the user that goes by the name Helen J. To say Helen is a good singer would be like calling Shakespeare and good writer or Monet a good painter. This would be a massive understatement.

I was amazed by the quality of her work and the power and purity of her vocals. I’ve included a small sample of the track she recorded for me from my song “Yay, The Celestial Sounds Do Ring.” Give it a listen here.

If you don’t get chills and an emotional uplift from this, I can’t imagine you’d get them from anything.

Happy New Year!

Herer is a little digital art piece celebrating 2026! May all the readers of this blog and those you hold dear have a wonderful, healthy and prosperous new year!

Harpists Can Rock Out Too!

You’ve probably never thought about the terms “harp’ and “rock music” in the same sentence but let me surprise you. Check out these incredible identical twins who rock out on the harp.

They do all the traditional harp music too but it’s fun to see something different.

These ladies are residents of Northern Illinois with a Norwegian heritage. The twins are also both 3rd Degree Black Belts in Tae Kwon Do and “Distinguished Experts” in rifle marksmanship, but do not hunt and are vegetarian.

They also enjoy sponsoring girls in Africa and we have been volunteer companions for children and young adults with special needs for years.

Talk about cool!

As some readers may know, I like to experiment with a number of art media. This includes unique and one-of-a-kind clothes and wearable items. I wanted to share the following that are no being featured in a cool online shop I’ve connected with called Humor Depot.

First, there is the “Spaghetti Shirt” which I describe as “The perfect shirt for young children or messy adults who tend to get splashes of pasta sauces, greasy cheeses or toppings from awesome Italian food on themselves while chowing down. No need to every worry about stains again because with the color combination of this t-shirt, stains simply became part of the pattern!”

Second, are my custom crazy socks which I describe as “Arch support, re-enforced toe, Y-heal for better fit. You can choose up to 3 colors to be included in your original, one of a kind design.”

If interested, check them out at Humor Depot. Shipping and tax are included!

Back when people thought the Earth was flat and wrote their notes on papyrus, I was in high school lol. Well, not quite that long even though sometimes I feel like it. One quarter I took pottery and let me tell you, it was tough. I got an “A” but more based on effort than quality for sure.

Fast forward to today. We recently got by niece some air dry clay for a birthday and I got to thinking – maybe this can be a bit of “pottery for dummies” if you will.

Image

My findings – it can work out pretty well. You just have to realize you should buy a quality air dry product, which can still gladly be inexpensive. Second, once you open it, make sure you either use the either piece of clay or store it in an air-tight package so it doesn’t dry out and become useless.

You can even paint the clay after it has dried.

It might be worth exploring for anyone interested.

As any sort of visual artist that houses his or her work on computer files, it’s always a good idea to have a backup, or even more than one. It really sucks when you lose the only copy you have of one of your favorite photos, graphic design works or print-ready copy of a drawing or painting.

There are many options for backup storage but most either have limits on the capacity or cost a ton. Here are two clever options that are essentially free, sort of.

Amazon Photos

If you already have an Amazon Prime account, which I assume many of us do, you can take advantage of the free photo storage that comes with it. Amazon will allow you to store an unlimited number of photos at full resolution.

Shutterfly

The photo printing services site allows users to store unlimited photos with one very little catch. You have to make a purchase once every 18 months. The cool thing is that there is no minimum on the price of that required purchase. So, you can literally order a single print at the lowest price available.

There are tons of royalty-free, copyright-free and Creative Commons resources for images out there, but only one, as far as I know, is completely hassle-free.

By this I mean you can download any photos without registration, without purchase and without any usage restrictions!

This resource is called the Foreign Tourists Image Bank and was created several years back but now has a new location housing the images. This update ensures that the site can have unlimited growth not restricted by the original hosting provider.

Check it out here:

And if you’d like to contribute to the collection, you can do that too!

For any photographers out there who are looking for a professional association to join but are turned off by membership fees and dues that can come with it, let me tell you about NLPI – Natuarl Light Photographers International.

If you are at all interested in shooting with natural light as part of your work, this group is for you. Any skill level is welcome to apply. You can even get a free printable membership card or a plastic card one if you want for a small fee.
