Sunday, February 22nd, 2026 23:56It's up!! (Well, the first half is.)
It may not be the form I would have preferred to first make it public in, but fucking hell, it still feels amazing to have it out there at all. I've been sitting on this shit for a decade. (And had it inhabiting my head for over twice that long!) aaaaaAAAAaaaAAAAAAAaaAAAAAaaaaaaa, basically.

O no I went and woke up my inner statsnerd X,D X,D
Saturday, February 7th, 2026 22:56I was rewriting the by far oldest chunk of scene that was still unreworked in Rev!pre today (for Reasons*), and after having publicly claimed earlier that it was five years older than everything else in the thing, I got very curious to know when exactly I did first write the beginning of that scene. And since I didn't start keeping a writing log till '07, that meant diving into my old file backup archives.
(Turns out those first half dozen paragraphs were in fact from 2002, not '05 or '06, which... no wonder the discrepancy in style was so notable. X,D X,D)
While I had the drive with five computers' worth of backup archives plugged in, I decided to copy over all the older writing folder backups that I didn't have easily at hand to my current main drive, and thought wistfully about how much easier future file history nerding would be if I could just browse through a changelog in file version form (which is a thing I only got systematic about some ten years ago) instead of having to slog through n number of backup folders with the exact same file version in to find the version I was looking for, and, uh.
Guess what I've spent the last 4+ hours doing? X,D X,D X,D (I'd go WHY WOULD ANYONE DO THIS TO THEMSELVES, except I'm actually a ridiculous nerd who is having fun manually building a file version archive from a decade's worth of writing backups. X,D X,D X,D X,D)
*) said Reason being that I've decided I want to post the 1.0 version, as it were, of its (to 95%) finished first two acts to /mythopoeia, just to bloody well finally have it publicly available somewhere. Which obviously means dealing with the worst of the rough edges that remain first.

For archival purposes more than anything
Wednesday, December 31st, 2025 23:33Aka roundup of things posted over at /mythopoeia this year. There's been several, and all! Insert :O face here, etc.
Lazily copypasted from the ficbit masterlist over there:
( 4x things (+ change) )
I'd kind of had dreams of adding a fifth to the list, since I had one more vignette that was technically done, but I had to conclude when I looked it over that there was still too much utterly dissatisfying prose in it for me to knock it into reasonable shape in just a couple of days, heh. Ah well! Eventually it'll see the light of day.

(description: good low frequency reproduction essential / post-dubstep, dubstep and close relations from the years 2008-2014)
Because I went "you know, wouldn't it be nice to have some of my favourite tracks from back in those days all in one easily accessible package", so, there you go. (Though I built the track pool some 2-3 months ago already, and then took till last week to actually start work on it, haha.) It was an interesting difference to build a mix without the limitation of it needing to fit onto a CD-r for the first time -- though it didn't end up running very much over that old standard, hee. It's a good mix length, clearly! It was nice to be able to add in a couple of extra tracks to smooth the flow without having to worry about if they'd fit within a set runtime, though.
( And a tracklist for archival convenience )
I'm still tempted to make a couple more mixes with music from this era, because there were some faves I wanted to rep for that were slightly too off theme, sonically and/or genre-wise, to fit in this one. We'll just see whether I actually have enough of a pool left for both of them after throwing so many of my undying favourites into this one. X,D

Yet more tech nerding, la la la
Saturday, November 15th, 2025 10:58In addendum to my last post: and then when I thought I was finally done, I discovered the hard way that monitors that don't have built-in speakers are, in fact, a thing. X,D X,D (Which was fine(ish) for the Ally! Less so for the Switch, which will route its sound into the HDMI cable when docked regardless of whether there's somewhere for it to come out or not. /o\) So there went an urgent additional purchase of a bluetooth speaker to round out the list*, ahahaha.
Which, darn it!! I'd been really looking forward to being able to hook the Switch up to a screen with much less latency, because the TV I upgraded to some three years ago turned out to have a way worse refresh rate than the old one**, and I've barely been able to catch a sturgeon in Animal Crossing in docked mode since when I basically never lost them before that swap-out. :/ (Not to mention the even trickier of the rare fish. *sighs in regret over pier fish*) And instead I ended up stuck with an audio unit with a full-second output delay*** instead of just an already iffy 10 millisecond one, gaah.
At least the screen output still has the significantly reduced delay, but I do rely rather too heavily on sound cues for my ACNH fishing for it to be enough on its own. Especially when the sound- and visual cues are vastly out of sync, heh.
(I also feared for a bit that I'd have to replace my beloved old Logitech K360 keyboard, which made me INCREDIBLY SAD because it is the most comfortable goddamn keyboard I have ever had. The key feel on it is an absolute pleasure. <333 BUT LUCKILY it seems like my connection problems were due to the batteries and not compatibility issues, phew; it's just really fricking impressive that the batteries decided to get really troublesome the exact moment I swapped the receiver over from Wigfrid to Nieve's dock. *shakes head*)
*) At least I've been tempted to get one for a good while already, for use with my tablet, so this gave me a justifiable excuse for the indulgence! Heh. Also it's just so pretty. <3
**) another consideration that didn't occur to me until it was to late, ahaha -- to be fair, I got that TV on a deep sale and as such wasn't making the comparisons I otherwise would have, so, *helpless shrug*
***) okay, it does belatedly occur to me there's an option I've forgotten to try: ie the dock may not have a headphone jack to plug my old wired speakers into, but the Switch itself does. Need to check if the sound will route into that even in docked mode, or no.

The twisty tale of Wigfrid and Nieve
Monday, November 3rd, 2025 15:04Aka after six months of work and acquisitions, I have a new PC set up! Pheeeeeew.
So the background here is: I haven't had a desktop setup since the early 2000s. Space has been enough of an issue that I've opted for laptops the last three times I had to swap out computers, but my eyesight has deteriorated enough in the last 2-3 years that laptops were no longer an option. I was already thinking about upgrading to a newer model soon because Wigfrid[my latest laptop]'s 8 gigs of RAM were good for all of two years before even my everyday utilities updated into big enough memory hogs to be a problem, and she's been in service for seven years at this point. Soooooo.
And then at the start of the year, she went and got haunted. X,D
( Strap in, this gets LONG )

Tuesday, September 12th, 2023 19:11Holy crap, I actually finished up the old vanity webpage project that I've wanted to finish up for my own local browsing convenience for an eternity. o_o My feeling of accomplishment is immeasurable.
(Also, loading up an actually complete version of it on my tablet set such a warm glow into my chest. Aaaaah so fantastic. <3)

Well, THAT was a bit of a rollercoaster of a week over in writingland, ahahahaha. Which included me committing 2,5k of story and character notes alongside my main quest of editing ancient stuff, lol. And wrapped with me writing an entire scene for The Other Old Thing, because my brain went "EFF THIS JUNK, this isn't what I signed up for!" when things took too much of a turn for the painful and depressing on the other side. XD;;;
As said: rollercoaster.
I have also spent the whole week failing to do languishing schoolwork that I had been fully intent on tackling, BECAUSE BRAIN EETS. Oh, hyperfocus, my old frenemy. /o\ (At least the assignments for the intro course are deadline-free, ahahahaha.)

Sunday, September 3rd, 2023 14:28You know that thing where you get a song you haven't listened to in years and years stuck in your head, but you can't remember who the artist was and you know the title was one of those nonsense idm titles that have no relation to what meager scraps of lyric you remember, all you know is it's somewhere in your (40k+ item) music library and also you're pretty sure it had come out by #timerange because that's when you were obsessed with it, you think, yeah, that one? Yeahhh, I've spent an obscene amount of time the last two days scouring the pre-mid noughties electronic sections of my music folder in the hope that I'd at least recognise the title if I saw it, ahahaha. (Turns out I didn't, the first time; but something made me double-check the Plaid folder, and this time I got that "this title holds a higher emotional resonance than its neighbours" ping from one of them, and yes!! That was it!! Seriously, I was about to lose it with my inability to identify the damn thing. XD;)
Basically, this is all just for the sake of doing this, in case I go and forget it again XD;;; (and also because it's still awesome):

I had my brain go into story mode while idling during everyday tasks again yesterday, was suddenly actually struck by that fact, and had another "I really am healing, aren't I" moment. So, yay, another grief CW post! :D
( Basically, I keep making these because I have to actively process this shit at SOME point, ahahaha /o\ )

Revenant music post attack
Friday, August 25th, 2023 12:17This is over a decade out of relevance by now (I originally put this writeup together in 2010/11), but every time I come to think of it, I feel Very Sad that I never posted it. It is some of the better music writing I ever did, after all.
So consequently: here, have a long, rambly thinky post about a song that came out in 2009! XD;
(Note that I haven't bothered to edit any of the time-relative references in this thing, so they're all speaking from a perspective of 2010.)
-----
So after spending half of last year failing to figure out how to write about Kelly's 12 Play, the solution finally came to me. Let's just say It Involves Lists. XD
PREFACE: facts about songs about music:
- 90% of them* are about music in the context of the club, and often as much about other elements of that context as about the music in itself
- most of remaining Songs About Music involve experiencing it in some manner of event form or other -- ie, again as much about the experience as about the music itself
- songs about listening to music in the intimate comfort of your own home, on the other hand -- yeah, I can't think of a single one off the top of my head. EXCEPT FOR THIS BITCH, THAT IS.
*) not statistically proven XD
( TL;DR: in the end, whether intentionally or not, the sex is only a metaphor )

Wednesday, August 23rd, 2023 21:35Ahahahahaha oh god I just wrote a scrap of thing for a thing I haven't touched in 20 years, and I'm already dayaftering so hard, two hours after putting it down, that I can tell I won't be able to touch it again for a month. XD; XD; (At a VASTLY optimistic estimate, lol.)
Why did I think this was a good idea? XD; I mean, besides the fact that fucking Jero up and actually started fucking handing me stuff, the utter bastard. XD; XD; (Sobbbbbb.)

"A pit of hyperfocus and sleep deprivation" is right
Tuesday, August 22nd, 2023 19:081) My relationship to reading has become so freaking dysfunctional, I don't even know. XD; Every time I've gotten into it more deeply this summer, I've ended up lying awake till the small hours and getting a maximum of 4h of sleep (because my body is still insisting on waking up by 7-8 regardless of when I fell asleep, the UTTER DINK). I think I've slept 14 hours in the last four days, ahahaha. /o\
(And I thought I was DONE last night because I finally finished up the last of the things I wanted to revisit, but then I found one more thing to dive into because they got mentioned too many times in the Other Stuff for me to resist, and oh hi there, the wrong side of 7 am. /o\ /o\ /o\ /o\ At least I really for reals AM done now, and can maybe finally get some sleeeeeeep ahahahaha.)
2) Apropos that One More Thing being my ancient stuff that I probably hadn't reread in over 15 years: it's kind of funny that that stuff is the Ancient Stuff when it's, you know, all of three years older than the 20yo stuff I've mainly been bingeing. XD XD But, well. There is a very sharp demarkation in my head between pre- and post-2001 stuff. It's different eras!
3) Also (very much further on that subject), how in the hell do I still find An Eye for an Eye so compelling?? I mean, the writing was not great and oh, boy, was it infected with millennial slashfic cliches, but my godddddd does the interpersonal shit still scratch all the itches and mash all the buttons. And to be fair, I did also genuinely enjoy the two character introduction scenes at the start; they were still surprisingly good! And on which note, HOW IN THE HELL DO I STILL LOVE RALPH SO MUCH? That was...NOT expected, ahahahaha.
The problem with all this, of course, is that now my brain is very busy scheming against me re: how to tweak this story into something I'll be willing to work on again, when I thought it was long since dead and buried. XD; XD; XD;
(At least the other ancients I revisited were ones I'm content to leave in the retired pile. Uh, mostly. *sideyes A Certain Hallverse Story that is apparently never going to completely die, ahahaha*)

OMG I HAD FORGOTTEN ABOUT THE AMAZINGNESS THAT IS THIS VIDEO.

Saturday, July 22nd, 2023 14:47Accidental method writing: having the utter lack of sense to read over things I'm trying to spark a continuation on before hitting bed in the middle of the night, actually getting said continuation, and sitting up till good ol' ass o'clock to write a scene in which #character is running on three hours of sleep. 😂 (Boy, could I relate before I was done enough to take a nap, ahaha.)
I'd go on, at length, but I'm honestly better off taking that to
mythopoeia, heh.
Speaking of /mythopoeia, if anyone's still around that cares about my original junk, I...up and posted some over there? (No one is more surprised than me!) A character meeting backstory ficlet, general audiences/no warnings.

Thursday, June 15th, 2023 13:17I am quite cross with my body for insisting on waking up by 8 lately, regardless of when I got to sleep. *grumble* This was, uh, rather disastrous last week when I got sucked into a nostalgic archive crawl and failed to tear myself from reading till all hours for five days straight. XD; (It is a loooong time since I've been that catastrophically sleep deprived, ahahaha.)
Anyway, complaining about my body's poor life choices isn't what I'm here for, but rather this: I seem to finally be healing.

I just finished my very first personal pet project! It's just a super-simple RNG toy, but I am so damn pleased to have finally got a working version after a couple of false starts that I'm super proud regardless. :D :D
( A little gif of mah toy in action! )
(And also because I've been craving a function like this for the better part of a year, because the point at which my Steam library reached unmanageable numbers sailed past a good long while ago. XD;)
