Last May, cardiology resident Abby Laws stepped into a sad and stressful emergency scene 🚨— but also into the middle of a one-stop marvel of medicine.
Her feline patient Alex 🐈 had presented at the NC State Veterinary Hospital emergency department with an arterial thromboembolism — a severe blood clot that travels to the rear legs, causing extreme pain, hind limb paralysis and often death.
But the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine is where research ideas are generated, tested, refined, studied in clinical trials 🔬 and then offered as life-changing therapeutics to hospital clients — all in one place — and feline cardiology is a specialty.
On the verge of needing euthanasia, Alex responded to expert hospital care and Dr. Laws` above-and-beyond help and now is contributing to research about his condition.

Our impactful partnerships are expanding! The NC State College of Veterinary Medicine and the Universidad San Francisco de Quito in Ecuador are now collaborating beyond our formalized program that allows NC State students and researchers to work through the Galapagos Science Center there. The USFQ is seeking AVMA accreditation for its veterinary program and last fall sent several representatives to visit NC State’s veterinary facilities and talk with its professors and hospital administrators. This month, NC State representatives traveled to Ecuador to explore equine 🐎 operations there.
The NC State team — Dr. Mat Gerard, anatomy professor, Dr. Timo Prange, the executive veterinary medical officer at the NC State Veterinary Hospital and an equine surgeon, and Dr. Anthony Blikslager, associate dean and director of Veterinary Medical Services — visited the university’s main small animal hospital in Cumbaya Ecuador (Hosvet) and its equine hospital at the Olympic-level Rancho San Francisco Club. They also went on field visits with the equine and farm animal services and assessed the university’s anatomy and pre-clinical teaching offerings in light of the accreditation efforts.
“We assessed what we had learned from their school in terms of how we might expand equine field services and gave them recommendations for hospital operations, particularly around caseload management, clinical teaching and finances,” Blikslager says. "It`s been another worthwhile collaboration for everyone."

#ThinkandDo? #SeeandBe! 🩺 Our VOICE (Veterinarians as One Inclusive Community for Empowerment) students shared their time and talents with Marbles Kids Museum during the Raleigh museum`s recent "See A Vet, Be A Vet" event.
Our #NCStateVetMed students helped children discover the wonderful world of veterinary medicine through interactive activities including bandaging 🧸 stuffed animals, identifying X-rays 🩻 and practicing newfound knowledge on volunteer therapy dogs! 🦮 Teaming up with community partners and helping to expand access to the veterinary field to everyone are an important part of our mission.

When Jackie Jaloszynski was reluctant to treat her anxious dog’s allergies with injections, 💉 Dr. Ina Herrmann researched and offered a 👉new transdermal immunotherapy👈that she had never used before. That was just one of the many reasons Jaloszynski and her husband Sid Bragg recently 💕 honored 💕the veterinary dermatologist for her extraordinary care of their dog Hudson.
“You are the epitome of @ncstate,” Jaloszynski told Herrmann. “State talks about being and doing the extraordinary, and we saw the extraordinary.”
Herrmann not only expertly treated his allergies, but she also took the time to understand the dog`s tricky temperament, checked on a possible heart murmur and helped the couple carry dog food to the car. “It’s going above and beyond," Jaloszynski said.

Botulism can be such a dire diagnosis that neither Dr. Erin Pearson, a large animal internist at the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine, nor Dr. Elizabeth Treece, an equine internal medicine resident, had ever treated an animal that survived it.
Until Mocha.
The much-loved miniature horse recently emerged from 16 days of continuous and expert care at the NC State Veterinary Hospital and burrowed back into the arms of an ecstatic Emily Haas, who calls her mini Mocha her soulmate. "Whenever I got Mocha, I was like, ‘Oh, this is what other people talk about in terms of love,`" Haas says. "Because when it comes to her, yeah, I would step in front of a car for her.”

With a ▶️ declared state of emergency ⬅️ upon the State of North Carolina, here’s some info to help you prepare for whatever winter weather comes our way this weekend!
🟣 First, the NC State Veterinary Hospital Emergency Services is open 24/7/365. Our top-notch and dedicated ER doctors, technicians and staff are simply amazing.
🖋️ NOTE: The NC State Veterinary Hospital, along with university, will be closed Saturday through at least Tuesday morning. All elective and non-emergent appointments scheduled for Monday are being rescheduled.
🟣 Second, we’ve posted detailed tips for keeping your animals safe at https://go.ncsu.edu/animalweathertips
Keep these things in mind, too:
👉 Avoid any spills or areas covered in antifreeze, salt and other de-icing products when walking pets. Even a few licks or walking through them can be deadly.
👉 Tap the hood of your car or do a quick once-over before you get in. Colder temperatures mean cats and wildlife may seek shelter in warm car engines or tires.
👉 Make sure horses and other outdoor animals have constant access to liquid water when the temperature drops below freezing.
👉 Check your dog’s paws for ice around the pads and for irritation from sidewalk and road salt. Wash paw pads with room-temperature water and smooth petroleum jelly on them.
