Surfin' Bird [Jan. 11th, 2026|11:50 pm]

We've spent the weekend at the beach. We booked a cabin in Moruya which worked out pretty well. I imagine in the off season this would be quite cheap and it might be a place we'll look at again in the future.

We did a surfing lesson as a family and they was pretty fun. I eventually got to stand up. We also popped our heads over the fence to watch Missy Higgins play, so I guess that's the first musical extravaganza for the year. We came back via Araluen which used to be a bit of a metropolis around the gold rush days. More of a one horse town in this era. We found the grave of my Nanna's Nanna's nanna - it was tipped upside down and barely readable.

The weekend was pretty good. My phone has decided it will chuck stories onto Facebook every now and then, so my thoughts on the Moruya skatepark are there for all to see.

Anyway, back home now. Still a couple of weeks until going back to work but that point is not that far off.

See You When You Hit The Bottom [Jan. 1st, 2026|09:44 pm]

[music |Make Them Suffer - Doomswitch]

Make Them Suffer - Ghost of Me

This was the first song that came up on shuffle for my new year. I feel they were one of my bands of last year, and definitely made the difference at Good Things of whether it was a good thing or not. Considering I had seen Machine Head and Refused earlier in the day, that's a pretty big call.

I did up a couple of vlogs from our trip down the coast. We packed in a fair bit into the trip down there. Hadn't been done for most of the year so had some catching up to do.

Unfortunately my Grandma passed away late last year. I don't know if I've mentioned that in here. I was the MC in the funeral. All the cousins have just had a bump of money to start the year which suits me just fine. Once the house is sold, probaby later in the year there will be further incoming income which is a nice thing to look forward to.

I've decided to keep my same goals from last year. I did a run through of them a week or two ago. Weighing up the year I'm still deciding was it actually good. We went to Europe, I changed schools, I saw a lot of my favourite bands, did some cool adventure stuff but there were some injury concerns, a few funerals. The Raiders had a really good year up until the point it counted.

  • Earn more than I did last year and have a much lower tax bill

  • Be involved with some footbag events (online or in person)

  • Travel overseas with the family

  • Continue writing music reviews

  • Be more social online (not just look at stuff, actually post, comment and be involved). This includes writing more

  • Get back under 90kg

  • Do more sporting activities as a family

  • Keep up to date with tracking of spending and other habits

  • Spend less money on beer

  • Have more date nights/weekends away

So to start the year, I got up reasonably early and did the parkrun at Gungahlin. 26:02 was my time. I think I can do a bit better than that. I felt most of the way I was going to poop my pants. Anyway, I did the new year park run one year ago and ended up with a grand total of 3 so surely I can beat that.

I put a post up openly saying that I plan on being at Worlds in Japan.

I've just set up my tracking thing. One thing I want to reduce is my mindless scrolling time but that's still got some work to do. I took the kids down to the local bike track for a ride. No beers today, so it's a pretty good start. Even if it is only one day.

Write on [Dec. 30th, 2025|01:37 pm]

I've been having a bit of a mental conundrum of late. There's a few projects which I've started and stopped over the years which I'd like to get back to but need to prioritise the time. Something but seems to be taking up a lot of time is starting endlessly at silly videos and it is an aim to cut right down on that over the next year and beyond.

Anyway, today I wanted to have a bit of a nothing day. I read a book which I started last night (The Dry), the book that movie with Eric Bana was based on. That was pretty good having just returned from a small country town.

Speaking of small towns, here's a couple of pictures from the trip away. We made a few trips to the beach and Dad and I managed to get into the surf which was good though I got smashed around a little on the paddles back out. It was a spot I came reasonably close to drowning when I was about 12 so I was hoping to go back and conquer the wave, which I didn't really do, but I did get a few waves, which is something.

On this endless social media scrolling, I've seen a few good ideas for looking at resolutions at targets in the new year. One was about ins and outs for the new year, a bit might you discuss the signings for a sports team.

I'm just thinking for a more/less though they seem pretty straightforward

more

- time at the beach/river/other water
- reading and writing
- time with friends
- tracking and planning money and finances
- serious exercise
- vlogs

similar

- going to see bands on a reasonably regular basis
- hopefully travel again
- plenty of family outings

less

- drinking
- endless scrolling
- giving up on ideas halfway through them
- being the one to organise all household expenses etc

there's some thoughts related to my day to day work day in the school but I'm thinking I shouldn't let that interfere with my day to day (that can be a statement for the less).

There's a few ideas which I might put into some proper goals in the coming days.

Bands of 2025 [Dec. 22nd, 2025|02:14 pm]
danbok

One of my goals of this year was something about using online time more wisely and being more sociable which I think I generally failed at overall. But suddenly having a lot of time on my hands and not feeling the need to come home and stare into the abyss for a time, I've increased productivity.

One thing I did was to make a little highlight reel of bands I've been to see this year and it's been a pretty impressive year overall.

I've also got a couple of things organised. For Francisca's birthday we'll go down to the coast and I've just booked a surf lesson for the family which should be kind of interesting. I've been bodyboarding my whole life but never tried much surfing. We've also got the following week in Jindabyne and I've just booked in some various adventures in Thredbo. We went down there early in the year and had a really good time.

I did some kayaking this morning. Went down near the Government House. That was a pretty good start to the day. Good view up to the arboretum and Black Mountain.

All in a year [Dec. 20th, 2025|08:25 am]
danbok
[Tags|, ]

Three posts in the year and then two posts in one day.

In the highly likely event I don't post anything else in the year - I'm going to take a look back at my goals from early in the year. I haven't really thought about these but they stand up pretty well as targets.

  • Earn more than I did last year and have a much lower tax bil

This is an interesting one - because I have achieved both of these things - though I spent most of the year being paid less than I should be. The tax bill is lower and the government has also made some reduction to student debt, so that's actually dropped by $8000. I still had a $3000 plus tax bill, but that's half of last year. Despite all these positives financial things are not looking great but there's some steps in action to build that back up (most of that is from the trip to Europe).

  • Be involved with some footbag events (online or in person)

Aside from the Joulukalenteri, not much - although I did meet up with multiple footbag players in Europe which was really cool. I did kick with one guy from the US - he has now moved to Melbourne. At the start of the year I did run a foot skills club at the school and I might do that again next year. I also went to Melbourne for the freestyle football champs. I had this good battle with Jay Hennicke who is a top world player - I did footbag and he did freestyle.

Here's actually a much earlier battle of ours.

  • Travel overseas with the family

This box was definitely ticked. I think we had the tickets already. The route was Sydney-Istanbul-Paris-Karlstadt (Germany)-Stuttgart-Besancon (France)-Zurich-Athens-Pompeii-Rome-Bologna-Venice-Paris-Istanbul-Sydney. We travelled mainly by train on the Eurail pass.

https://instagram.com/p/DOk_p8jkf-d
https://instagram.com/p/DPeAjzNEYxI

  • Continue writing music reviews

I did do this but probably not as many as I would like to considering the amount of shows I attended. I did get to go to Knotfest and Good Things reviewing and there were sideshows for Hatebreed and Machine Head but there wasn't too much beyond that. I did do one review for a different publication and I may look at expanding in that area but I am mindful of the heavy level of busy times that will come through the year.

https://instagram.com/p/DScJ9EZkYtI

  • Be more social online (not just look at stuff, actually post, comment and be involved). This includes writing more

This one is pretty much a fail. I've got that in mind and will keep this as a goal for next year. I am spending a lot of time just doomscrolling, looking at stupid videos and need to cut that down or even right out in the coming times.

  • Get back under 90kg

This would also not be a success. Ahead of going to Europe I stopped the gym membership and have stopped measuring things completely but I might get back into that in the new year. Probably the next few topics are kind of related. But I've been drinking too many beers, exercising a sort of regular amount, maybe a bit less than usual and eating has probably not been great.

  • Do more sporting activities as a family

A huge one on this was on our travels there was this big sports day along the road in front of the Louvre. That was quite a fun outing. We also walked many many many steps along the way and have been doing some tennis in the yard. Probably not done as much as we could on this but there's been a few boxes ticked.

  • Keep up to date with tracking of spending and other habits

I did a really good job of this until we went to Europe then it was a bit too much. I will get back into this for next year and hopefully complete the year. It is a good habit.

  • Spend less money on beer

The tracking told me this was a big fail. One to work on for next year.

  • Have more date nights/weekends away

We had some, including a weekend seeing PJ Harvey and New Order earlier in the year but probably still not so many. The kids are going to head down the coast early so that gives us a few days to ourselves before we go down there.

Where to begin [Dec. 20th, 2025|07:42 am]
danbok
[Tags|, , ]

I think I've made about 3 posts in the year, I'm not using this a lot these days and the friends page doesn't work properly (just shows like one or two entries and then nothing more).

The school holidays are back upon us and to be honest the last month or so has been exhausting.

On the school front we've had the "exhibition" and graduation and rest of end of year stuff and I'm super glad not to be teaching year 6 next year.

Image

We recently had the funeral for my Grandma. We spent a lot of time going up and back to Sydney and then I was running the show in the funeral itself.

https://instagram.com/p/DRJeS2ikSQS
On one of the trips I took the kids to Balmoral, a place Grandma really liked.

I've been to a bunch of musical things. Not least Machine Head, including meeting them and being too drunk and talking too much. I also went to Good Things which was insanely hot. It was only really until watching Make Them Suffer towards end of day that I had an overall good day. Refused and Machine Head were both on earlier in the day. We also took the kids to see AC/DC - we were way up the back but this was a pretty cool experience.

Because it's been so long since I posted at all - we took a trip to Europe in September/October.

The main reason was for a wedding in France. We saw a lot of "big ticket" items (Eiffel Tower, Colliseum, Pompeii, Acropolis, Delphi so on and so forth) but we particularly enjoyed some time in smaller places. We spent a lot of a lot of money and that's still having an effect on the finances. I also saw Parkway Drive in Zurich.

The Joulukalenteri footbag Christmas calendar is on once again - I made my submission which I've now been doing for about 10 years in a row.

We'll head down to the coast for Christmas and I'm pretty pleased about that.

Cast Off [Jun. 6th, 2025|11:05 pm]

[music |Machine Head - Seasons Wither]

Just like Imagemillionbubbles I've recently had a small buzzing saw up to my skin to knock my cast off. Very random that we both did the same injury very close in time. I'm glad to be out of it but I'm not hugely confident in using it. Even typing feels pretty awkward as it's been jammed in the cast and out of use for a long while.

I haven't been posting much or even looking on the site really.

The Raiders are having a good season. I went to the game in Sydney on the weekend. It was fun. That was Josh Papalii equalling the record for most Raidering. This week he will beat the record and I plan on going also.

Up the mighty milk.

I drank a lot of beers. That maybe didn't come out so well on my tracking of spending etc. I got a bit lax in May so I'm trying to catch up on that. I'm back on track for these few days of June now. I caught up with Duncan and that was fun too.

https://instagram.com/p/DJfrASEhspp
We did a walk back on Mothers Day to One Tree Hill. That was a while back but it was pretty good. We did the same walk a couple of years back but this had less complaining from the children.

I'm writing my school reports at the moment (obviously why I'm here close to midnight, but I made some good progress today).

Family History - To Be Sorted [Apr. 22nd, 2025|01:06 pm]
danbok
HpBoyle-Enhanced-Colorized.jpg

I've been going through some family history stuff lately and came across this picture from 1892. In this picture is Michael Boyle and Hannah Dooley - these are my Pop's grandparents. His father is the 3 year old (Hugh Patrick Boyle). I haven't done too much of the family history stuff lately but a few little bits and pieces have piqued my attention. The little baby is Thomas Emilion Boyle. I went and found his name on the list at the War Memorial when visiting the other day, he died in World War 1.

I think I have not posted the whole year, I've tried a couple of times and got some error or other.

I logged on and saw Imagemillionbubbles has a broken scaphoid. I can join that team too. Fracture for me. I was riding home from the skatepark - a more likely place to get an injury, then just overbalanced somehow. Put my hands out and here we are. I had an operation to get a piece of titanium inserted as it wasn't healing properly.

https://instagram.com/p/DIsLeo1B5G9

Despite this injury I got in a footbag session with a visitor from USA, still played to a decent level. We'vew had visitors out from Chile, now Francisca has gone with them to Thailand. So we will be taking things pretty easy here over these days. Jasmine has been sick so I will let her rest up.

I went to Knotfest and also the Hatebreed sideshow. I more expected some broken bones there rather than riding my bike in a straight line.

We're going to go to Europe later in the year. We've booked tickets through Turkish airlines so we have a night in Istanbul each way. We'll have a few nights in Paris then go up and stay with Dad's cousin in Germany. Then we come back down into eastern France for a wedding and after that we'll look at Switzerland, Italy and Greece before making the way back to Paris.

I went out a couple of times in the blow up kayak while the balloon festival was on. Can't do that for a while unfortunately.

Of course it wouldn't be a year if I hadn't gone to see The Butterfly Effect.

Saw them within a couple of weeks in Sydney and Melbourne.

Raiders are going pretty well this year. 5 wins out of 7 and into third place. Will hopefully go watch them on the weekend.

2025 Goals [Jan. 1st, 2025|10:11 pm]
danbok
[Tags|, ]

After going through my goals of last year, I think I had a bit too much on the list, or maybe too much detail overall. So I might try and limit things.

These are the plans for this year.

  • Earn more than I did last year and have a much lower tax bill

  • Be involved with some footbag events (online or in person)

  • Travel overseas with the family

  • Continue writing music reviews

  • Be more social online (not just look at stuff, actually post, comment and be involved). This includes writing more

  • Get back under 90kg

  • Do more sporting activities as a family

  • Keep up to date with tracking of spending and other habits

  • Spend less money on beer

  • Have more date nights/weekends away

So the new year has come. I did a big post about 25 things for 2025. It was a pretty good year overall, especially in regards to music. Where it wasn't so good was in the work space, but I have changed jobs so that's a good move in that regard. I started out last year with the not unreasonable expectation that if I worked hard I might get a higher up position and more money blah blah blah. In the end I bit off too much and that was never going to happen and I feel at the next gig I will try and stay pretty lowkey.

I did parkrun today. It was the first time I did it. I'd like to get the whole family going on a semi regular basis, seems a pretty good vibe there at the local one and you can do them wherever. I did 26 mins for the 5km, which I'm sure I could bring down as I'm probably carrying a few extra Christmas hams.

My sister is aiming for a year off the booze this year. I have gone a bit more lowkey but aim to drop some kgs and to spend less on beer through the year. The key to that is simply not drinking so much, but let's see how things go. Started off with no drink today, so that's something. I'm also getting back into the tracking. I've followed an account or two on Instagram who are super into this sort of thing and are actually selling a spreadsheet to do something very similar to what I do but I will just stick with my personal.

We're just back from the coast in recent days and we'll be up to Sydney the day after tomorrow.

In terms of musical events, I've got a few locked in already.

Speed on Jan 12
In Hearts Wake on Feb 15
The Butterfly Effect on Feb 16
Knotfest on March 8
PJ Harvey on March 13

I also have some interest in going to Alexisonfire on March 11 and I imagine there will be a Hatebreed sideshow around Knotfest, I certainly hope so anyway. Those ones above I have tickets to already and some of them I might get a review so hopefully can get the tickets on to somebody else.

I made a few videos to round out the year of some things I had been meaning to do and put off.

So anyway, I think all those goals are achievable, let's see how we go on them.

Here's Looking at You Kid [Dec. 22nd, 2024|07:25 am]
danbok
Money

- Receive another payrise. I am already getting one once we get back into action, but I would like to have another one lined up by end of year.

I've changed jobs. Pay is about the same, but will hopefully rise

- Work hard on getting the school into a good position organisationally. This will either work to get the one above, or maybe mean less work all round.
Go to more "networking events" and get the school involved in more events (Rostrum, Da Vinci Decathlon etc)
I feel I did do this, but of little benefit to me (more work, little success). But there is more to tick off the box professionally.

- Reduce spending on bills

Difficult to do when they keep raising the prices. I would say the spending is reasonably similar. Solar is helping with the electricity bill.

Do daily tracking of spending and other habits

I started doing this, then just stopped. I will hopefully get back into this for next year. It's a very good habit.

- Keep credit card balance low

This blew out a bit at times. It's currently got a positive balance as I got the payout from finishing the job, rather than getting paid over the holidays. So we'll see how things go over the holidays. I think I will try and cancel the card, possibly getting another one or none at all in the coming months.

Continuing earning through various rewards programs
This has gone pretty well, particularly the FlyBuys program from Coles. Also the Cashrewards, which is mainly getting some cashback from various bookings on accommodation.

Make use of subscriptions (we currently have the gym membership, Questacon membership until April or so, I just signed up to Kayo for watching sports as they have a half price deal, Raiders memberships (4 x 4 games, of which I will probably use most of them), the kids have free access to Canberra United soccer games, we also have Netflix in terms of streaming stuff.

Gym has been OK, probably not quite enough use, but get there reasonably regularly, at least to use the pool. Questacon we renewed and probably haven't been in that time. Kayo was fine with the half price deal, got rid of it for the moment, hopefully get a new deal for next season. Raiders membership, the kids barely went, but it worked fine. Netflix we use fairly reguarly. I just got something from Amazon so I've got Prime for the moment, mainly to watch the Rings of Power season. We'll probably get Disney over the holidays too. We went to one Canberra United game which was pretty good but we haven't been back since. Looks like they made some changes to that so it won't work this year.

Grow some vegetables at home

We had some herbs at home at the start of the year in a wheelbarrow thing. I've just planted a couple of extras in there now and we got a hanging strawberry pot which is growing a few already. I guess you would say this one is a "working towards".

Overall on the work/money - I feel I was too committed to the work in the school and that led to a lot of frustration. In the new school I hope to be more of a background character. Looking at what I was writing I had some belief that I could work hard and get some kind higher level position. That never happened. I also had huge amounts of tax to pay this year and last, I believe mainly because they weren't paying the right amount of tax for my student debt. So if I can top have many thousands of debt, that would be great. I've also got health insurance now, as without it I have an extra $3000 added to my tax bill.

I am spending way too much on beer. Have made a few savings doing the concert reviews, though quite often I have bought a ticket already or haven't been able to get rid of a +1. But still, there's more than $1000 value in the concerts I've been to, so that's pretty good. We can probably work a bit more on cutting down the bills, but the prices just increase so even if you bring down the use, the bill will be about the same.

I think the most important thing to do in this space was to change jobs. It would have been easy to just stick around and keep complaining. It was also good to finish out the year. I made some good achievements in the year that will look good when looking back on it.

Exercise/Sport

- Use the gym on a regular basis (> 2x per week)

It wouldn't be at that level, but not too far off either. I usually go on a Tuesday morning very early, then go quickly after work some day. Sometimes take the kids to the pool on the weekend. It will be a bit more conveniently located to my new school so we'll see if I can add in a session. A lot of the time I just play footbag and then jump in the pool. That's still good exercise.

- Have a session with a trainer

Haven't done this, and don't have too much motivation to do it, but it's probably a good idea.

- Hit a beast combo, break PB for fearless combos (footbag)

Haven't done either of this, but have a few ideas that might get it to work.
- Play footbag with other people

This guy Tom from Chicago came out and I travelled to Sydney and we had a kick. That was definitely a highlight of the footbag year.
- Compete in a footbag tournament
Nothing on in Australia, don't think I went in any online competitions this year either. Did compete at the Aus champs for freestyle football, was good to get back into that and see some of those guys. Funnily enough, without ever being any good, I have probably competed in more Australian champs than many others.

- Work on other kicking sports (jianzi, takraw, freestyle football etc)
I've done bits and pieces here. I got some new da cao from Vietnam and as mentioned went to the tournament for freestyle football.

- Organise more school sporting events

I reckon next year's goal might be to organise less school sporting events. I did the regional athletics carnival and two soccer days. This is a lot of extra work to put on myself - when I'm already complaining about the extra work I was putting on myself.

- Get back under 90kg

I had one measurement that was 89. something, but generally I've been somewhere between 92-94. This can be another one to stay on the list for next year.

- >100 alcohol free days in the year
Don't know about this one. That's two per week. Probably not
- Track eating, drinking, exercise, sleep
Already mentioned in the money section that this didn't happen. Planning to bring this back next year.
- Run half marathon distance
I've barely run at all this year. I will go through some phases with running but never get crazily into it.
- Climb 2 >1000m peaks
Definitely one. We did a trip to Kosciuszko earlier in the year (child free). We might go there early next year as a family trip.  From the top of my head I don't think I've done any other big mountain walks this year.
- Cycle 100km
- Cycle >3000km in the year

According to my Strava stats, the longest ride was 65km and I did about 2000km in the year. Not all of the rides were recorded, but that sounds reasonably accurate. I think my bike was out of action for a time. That 100km ride has been on the list for a long while, should tick that off soon enough.

Health and sport overall. OK I guess. I've had a sore back in recent days, think I hurt it carrying things out of my classroom. We've got the health insurance now so I'll try and make use of that because it's not cheap in any way. Footbag is going along OK, have just ordered a couple of new bags. Would love the chance to go to a tournament somewhere next year. I've been riding a fair bit - mainly just to go to work. Will have to go for some more fun rides.

Travel

- Do a trip with the family (maybe Spring school holidays, maybe Tasmania). I think overseas travel might be off the map this year.

In the Spring holidays we did a trip up the coast with my sister. The two of us with five kids between us. Starting in Ulladulla and getting as far north as Port Macquarie. It was a pretty good time overall. Lots of beach time.
- Do a trip away with Francisca
The above mentioned trip to the mountains, as well as going to see Iron Maiden around the time of my birthday. I think that's an area we can increase in.
- Go to a Raiders away game

I don't think I went to any this year. We did go to the trial at Seiffert Oval which was fun, we got to meet some of the players.
- Do more trips to the coast
Well the coastal trip boosted this figure and we'll spend a few more days down the coast. Also had some time in Wollongong - at the start of the year to see Amity Affliction and on Fathers Day to see RUN.
- Book in travel for the following year
Nothing is booked in but we've been invited to a wedding in France and there's some serious thoughts about going to that.

No overseas travel this year, but I had some personal trips to see bands - quite a few. We had a couple of trips away together as a couple and a few family trips as well.

Music

- Go to at least 10 shows
- Continue doing reviews for MetalRoos
- See a band more than once on the same tour

- Make a vlog of one of the musical trips

This vlog of Svalbard in Sydney and Melbourne probably answers all these questions.

Here's some bands I reviewed for Metalroos

In Flames/Kreator
Cog
Killswitch Engage/Dropsaw
Parkway Drive
Good Things Festival

Speaking of good weekends, early in the year I saw the following combo of The Living End and The Butterfly Effect - who also both played at Good Things.

Other bands I have seen this year

Machine Head/Fear Factory, Luca Brasi, Iron Maiden/Killswitch Engage, Frenzal Rhomb and I'm sure there are more I am forgetting.

But this year I have been back into music, more shows, more reviews, more attention to what is happening of late and that's been a good (maybe the biggest "win" of the year). There's also not a lot of things I'm like oh I wish I had've gone to that.

Reading/Writing

- Read 40 books by the time I am 40 (starting from birthday last year). I'll have to start doing something to track these.
- Update Sport/Life website regularly
- Update Modified footbag forum regularly
- The Metalroos one goes here too.
- Post each month in Livejournal
- Make 10 more vlogs

- Complete 52 Ancestors in 52 weeks project

These are pretty much all failures aside from the music reviews. I have read quite a few books but haven't really been tracking them and don't really want to. Every post I make in here starts with "it's been a long while". Including this post, it will be 10 posts for the year (that used to be my daily rate sometimes in the early days!).

As I was writing this the computer just shut down by itself, as it likes to do. Regularly. If I can get some savings going I think a new computer could be a good investment. That will have to wait though.
All these things I've done in a patchy fashion and also set up some new things to do in a patchy fashion. This is an area I can work on and would like to. So that can be a focus for next year.

So overall, I think it's going OK. Getting back into music in a big way has been a good one. Made a couple of new friends and more importantly reconnected with some old ones, especially at those Butterfly Effect 20 year shows. Have had some big wins in the professional side of things, and made an important change in jobs.
