Evolution

As a copywriter on the Allstate account it’s not all Mayhem. Which would be nice.

Image

The majority of my time is split between national mayhem work, Allstate’s sports sponsorship work like the Sugar Bowl and BCS National Champs game, and specialty lines like motorcycle, snowmobile, boat, etc. Currently I have a handful of Mayhem commercials, motorcycle and snowmobile work that’s in production. When the N.D.A. is lifted I will throw it on the blog, but for now I just wanted to show my friends and family some of the less “glamorous” work I’ve done in the past few months, and the steps it takes to create it.

Life insurance.

My assignment was to create a life insurance campaign that speaks to new parents.

So I brainstormed a bunch of ideas. Which looked like this:

ImageThen my art director and I share ideas with each other, and take our favorites to our Creative Director. We whittled it down to 3 ideas and then present them to the client. Here are the two print ads from the campaigns the client didn't pick.

ImageThe winning campaign came from the idea that new parents have to juggle so much with a new baby that they actually become masters at doing things with one hand. In comparison, a quick call to Allstate for life insurance seems like the easiest thing they’ll ever do with one arm.

Idea: Hero Moms
Getting Life Insurance is the Easiest Thing You’ll Do With Just One Arm

These were the rough comps we showed the client.

Once Allstate gave us the okay we hired the phototgrapher, Martin Schoeller. He helped us bring these ideas to life. Take a look.

The baby in the Carnival print ad is actually my daughter. The talent agency we were using couldn't find a baby with the specs we wanted. So my daughter stepped up.

The campaign has been running for about two months now. And in that time, Allstate has received more calls for their life insurance policies than the entire year prior. Not too shabby.

Donkey Kong

This summer I worked on the Nintendo account for a month. One of the projects I worked on was the release of Donkey Kong for Wii. I came up with the idea of advertising the game with stickers on Chiquita Bananas. The DK stickers will be on Chiquita Bananas for the next few weeks. I took these pictures last night at the grocery store. Image

NFL in LA

The past few years there has been a lot of talk about bring an NFL team back to LA.

Last week I stumbled on this propaganda laced website that discusses the benefits of bring an NFL team to LA. After thoroughly reading through the website the propaganda has worked on me. I’m all for bringing an NFL team to LA.Image

I think the location is perfect, outside of downtown and close to Orange County.

I love the idea of an NFL team coming to LA so much that in fact, if the marketing director of this future team happens to stumble across my blog I would like to introduce myself and apply for the brand manager position.

AT&T vs Verizon

ImageWhen AT&T first started selling the iPhone on January 9, 2007, their network wasn't big enough or strong enough to support all the data the iphone uses. The iphone has bogged down the network for the last four years.
Everyone complains about the AT&T network, like my beloved co-worker who just said, "When Verizon comes out with the iphone I'm switching to Verizon."

I think that's must AT&T iphone users sentiments, and I hope they all do switch over, leaving AT&T less bogged down. Then we can all watch Verizon struggle with the same issues AT&T has had for the past four years.

Classical 89 50th Anniversary

I co-wrote these spots at BYU Broadcasting for Classical 89's 50th Anniversary Celebration. If you don't get the humor in these commercials then you need to read up on your classical composers.

Especially for copywriters from the hood.

My coworker saw that I was listening to Snoop Dogg while I was writing copy, so he sent me this.

New Found Love

To know heaven is to hold you in my hands.
To know satisfaction is to touch you with my lips.
To know sadness is to be without you for a day.
To know true bliss is to hear your creator say,
"That will be .89 cents Sir."
O how I love you Beefy 5-layer Burrito!

Orange Julius can't touch this!

Image

Have you ever gone to Orange Julius and left wanting more? Me too, my crafty brother came up with this recipe that puts Orange Julius' Orange Smoothly to shame. Try it.

- 1/2 can frozen orange juice concentrate
- 1 cup milk
- 1 tsp. vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 10 ice cubes (about two hand-fulls)

Blend together. Enjoy.
(Use the other half can of O.J. to make a second batch. One batch is just a tease, the second batch is to satisfy.)

This gives life to thee.

Love or hate William Shakespeare, you must admit he could write some powerful sentences.

I will be the first to admit I sometimes get lost in his overzealous attempts of descriptive language. However, from time to time when reading pieces of his literature you will stumble upon sentences or even stanzas of absolute brilliance.

For example, one of my personal favorites by Shakespeare taken from Sonnet #18, better known as "Shall I compare thee to a summer's day.":

So long as men can breathe, or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.

Plain and simple, this stanza gives voice to his heart. Bill obviously wrote this with great love, either something he was feeling personally or his interpretation of someone else's love. I like this poem, but I love this ending. The idea that you love someone so much, that you wish to immortalize them through a poem.

What was the theme of the new millennium?

When I look back on the past decade of the new millennium there are obvious themes that pop out in my mind like terrorism, globalization, reality TV and the birth of social networks. However, there is an underlining theme I have noticed.

Acceptance.

Topics such as bulimia, abortion, sex addiction, obesity, homosexuality et cetera were once misunderstood and even shunned. In the new millennium Americans decided that it wasn’t right to judge those individuals associated with these issues. We felt as a society that we should be more understanding with things we do not identify with.

For the most part I think this shows a great amount of maturity from our nation as a whole. There’s just this small part of me that worries this “acceptance” could lead to a degeneration of our society.

Not the acceptance of these topics specifically, but the concept of accepting everything.

Where do we as a society make a stand on what’s right or wrong? Or is that our job? Is what’s right or wrong up to every single individual? Is it possible to find common morals or standards?

Disney is the only entity that can use the word “Fantasy” without sounding creepy.

Image

Yesterday as I sat on the curb on Main Street in Disneyland waiting for the parade to start, a voice came over the loud speaker and announced that the Disneyland Christmas Fantasy parade was about to begin.
And I didn’t think anything of it…

On the other hand if you ask your friend, “Hey man, what’s your Christmas Fantasy?”
That sounds creepy.

Or what if you ask someone what kind of books they like to read, and they say Fantasy.
A little red flag goes off in your head.

Let this be a reminder to you all, if you are not Disney don’t use the word fantasy, or people will just think you’re creepy.
