** Congratuations to Team BayBucks on winning the Governor's Cup! **

August 1-3

Teams created data-driven applications to increase public engagement and aid in Chesapeake Bay restoration at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center in Edgewater, MD.

DataBay, created by Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley and DataBay partners, invited programmers, environmental scientists and other civic hackers, who were interested in helping the Chesapeake Bay to participate. Over the weekend, teams worked on their ideas, culminating with presentations and awards.

August 27

Team finalists presented their ideas to Governor O’Malley and a panel of entrepreneurs, investors and environmental scientists at the State House. The best team won the Governor’s Cup and an additional $4000 cash prize.

Challenges were posted by our partners and sample Chesapeake Bay datasets and resources served as further inspiration. Environmental and technical consultants were available to help the teams throughout the event.

  3. Think of an idea to work on and find some data to use.
    Think of your own idea -or- get inspired by one of our challenges.
  4. Submit your idea and present it to the judges.
    More specific guidelines and deadlines will be given at the event.

Eligibility

Programmers, scientists, and other "civic hackers" were all invited. We encouraged individuals to team-up. Teams could have an unlimited number of members. If individuals didn't already have a team, we helped them find one at the event.

Requirements

Submissions were for data-driven applications to help the Chesapeake Bay. Submissions could range from working software prototypes to polished mockup presentations. Refer to the judging criteria for how submissions were judged.
