DaWetRest

Danube Wetlands and flood plains Restoration through systemic, community engaged and sustainable innovative actions

DaWetRest aims to restore wetlands in the Danube Region. But what are wetlands and what benefits are there to restoration?

Wetlands are areas where water either covers the soil or is close to the surface for most of the year or for certain periods, especially during the growing season.
They come in many forms such as Seagrass, Kelp Forests, Coral Reefs, Estuarine Waters, Salt Marshes, Mangroves, Tidal Flats, Lakes, Rivers and Streams, Inland Marshes and Swamps, and Peatlands (Mires).

Benefits of Wetland Restoration

Healthier Fish Habitats

Renaturalized wetlands provide better conditions for fish, increasing fish density and promoting biodiversity.

Cleaner Water

Wetlands naturally filter water, helping to purify it through natural processes in restored riverbeds.

Climate Adaptation

Restored wetlands help improve air quality by filtering harmful pollutants, contributing to climate resilience.

Carbon Storage

Wetlands store carbon, helping to reduce greenhouse gases and fight climate change.

Protection from Disasters

Wetlands store carbon, helping to reduce greenhouse gases and fight climate change.

Better Quality of Life

Restored wetlands provide beautiful, near-natural spaces for recreation and connection with nature, improving overall well-being.
