Back to time-sharing?

Used to be headquarters had control of all of the computing resources. Then came timesharing, then interactive computing, then, wonder of wonders, everyone could have their own computer, and could even carry it around.

With the advent of cloud computing, are we returning to the days of timesharing, only with someone else owning the glasshouse, and the terminals bring lightweight mobile devices?

Musings.

Take me out to the ballgame

Next weekend, the Florida Marlins are in Seattle to play the Mariners. Because of a U2 concert in Florida, these will be home games for the Marlins. So Safeco Field will be hosting a National League home game, complete with pitchers batting.

I got a ticket for next Saturday's game. I think I need to borrow a glove.

Section 143, Row 1.

Books!

The BBC believes most people will have read only 6 of the 100 books listed here. Bold those books you've read in their entirety, italicize the ones you started but didn't finish or read an excerpt.

looks like an updated list.Collapse )

Historically low interest rates?

I was skeptical of these claims, as we refinanced. Then I looked at the loan documents from when my parents bought their house back in 1946.

Our interest rate is lower than theirs was.

Granted, their payment was something like $42 a month. Ours is significantly higher.

Ack!

Weight Watchers just changed the program. PointsPlus values are calculated differently then the previous Points values. Reducing carbs and increasing fruits and vegetables are emphasized.

Gah! Finally got really comfortable with the old program. Glad it doesn't change very often.

Fun stuff

Yes, it's ours!

Dave Niehaus, RIP

Dave Niehaus, the broadcast voice of the Seattle Mariners since the team's inception in 1977, and a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame as a Ford C. Frick award winner, passed away today.

This is a sad, sad day for the legions of Mariners fans everywhere.

My, Oh, My.

I just signed up on the MINI site. (Yes, we're considering a MINI.) Here are some of the terms of service:
I also agree to avoid ruts.

And I agree to change my locker combination to include the numbers 1964 (the year we won our first Monte Carlo rally).

I agree to chase squirrels around the park every now and then and giggle like a madman while doing it.

I agree to be more adventurous and try to avoid homogenized restaurant chains.

I agree to name my first-born Cooper.

I agree to bare the soles of my feet to the earth and feel grass, sand, stones, and streams.

I agree to watch the movie "The Italian Job" as soon as I can.

I agree to at least think strongly about learning to play a musical instrument.

I agree to consider painting the roof of my house in contrasting colors.

Yes, Edgar hit it, then Griffey motored around from 1B to score. So while he didn't get the hit, he was an integral part of the play.

My favorite Griffey hit was when he and his dad hit…
