history: Sora’s canon historyalternate history: There are a few terms you will need to know. The main one is this: χ-blade. The χ-blade is a legendary weapon that can only be forged through a careful process. Two hearts, one of strong light and the other of deep darkness, must do battle, clash, and merge. The χ-blade is then forged, granting whoever wields it unrestricted access to Kingdom Hearts and the ability to rewrite the universe how they see fit. Essentially: it is a weapon that grants someone godhood. And this is all
canon so far.
To create this, Master Xehanort took on a young boy named Ventus. He tried to force the boy to accept darkness in the Keyblade Graveyard, sending Neoshadows after him. But instead, Ventus cowered and was nearly killed. Seeing no other choice, he stabbed the boy in the chest with his Keyblade, separating his heart into its dark and light halves. And thus was Vanitas born, initially faceless. But something went wrong. Ventus was fading fast. Xehanort, seeing no way to heal the boy, simply took him and dumped him on Destiny Islands.
The unexpected happened. A newborn heart reached out to Ventus. It healed Ven’s heart by connecting itself to him, allowing Ventus to live. So just as Xehanort began to walk off, Ventus raised an arm and summoned his Keyblade—proving himself to be useful. But what no one knew at that point in time was that this same heart had connected to another, bathing a cold half a heart in warm light and granting a face.
This is where we reach the first part of the divergence from canon, although much smaller than the later, much larger divergence. Sora, the heart that connected to both Ventus and Vanitas, was born a little girl instead of a little boy. This led to Vanitas taking a feminine form, as well.
While Sora grew up and made friends with Riku—Kairi still being canonly in Radiant Garden until the age of five—Ventus and Vanitas were momentarily reunited. Until she tried to kill Ventus, as per novel canon. Xehanort, seeing no way this would work out, took Ventus to his classmate, Master Eraqus, for training. After leaving him there, he forced on Vanitas, brutally training her for four years. And in those four years, she discovered the Unversed—creatures she could create from her own emotions, shedding them to become virtually unfeeling.
It is also in this time that she discovered Ventus’ weakness: his friends. But it also created a deep-seated envy within. Because, well, Vanitas could sense some of Ventus’ emotions through the fact they were two halves of the same whole. Vanitas could feel the warmth Ventus felt when surrounded by family, and came to resent it as it only reminded her of how alone she was and, according to everything so far, always would be. This made Vanitas into the bitter, cruel individual seen in canon.
It is only after Xehanort’s plan is set in motion that things begin to change. Terra is drawn into the outer worlds by the Unversed, allowing for him to be primed as a vessel Xehanort can possess to gain a younger body. Ventus is then talked into following him in order to try and save him, egged on by Vanitas appearing in his room. And finally, Aqua, the back-up for Ventus, is sent to follow the boy to bring him home. This leaves them all relatively divided physically and vulnerable.
While Terra is being primed for possession, Ventus is being inadvertently trained by Vanitas and the Unversed to toughen him up to forge the χ-blade. And this is how the journey of Birth by Sleep went: the three constantly missing each other and learning, growing and changing. And perhaps it made them closer, to a degree. But it all would end in tragedy.
Seeking time to think, Terra found himself on Destiny Islands, where he found two small children: a boy and a girl. There, he was drawn to the boy, who had the potential to wield the Keyblade. He saw in the boy himself, and realized why it was he was actually fighting—something he’d lost sight of in his attempts to become a Master. So he performed the Inheritance Ceremony with Riku, marking him as a future Keyblade wielder.
Aqua later ran into both of them, as well, and made the little girl—Sora—promise to keep Riku, the boy, from wandering down a dark path alone. Sora happily made this promise, and Aqua left them behind. And while this was happening, Ventus was remembering his past and everything about it. This drove him home, where his father figure, Master Eraqus, attempted to kill him. But Terra intervened, thinking there to be another way. Eraqus sought to end Terra, too, to save him from his own darkness. But it ended with Terra the victor. And that ended horribly. Eraqus was quickly killed by Xehanort, who then plunged the Land of Departure—the world Terra, Aqua and Ven had called home—into darkness, allowing it to fall into ruins.
From there, the trio met up at the Keyblade Graveyard, where Ventus asked to be erased but his friends refused. A terrible battle broke out, leaving Terra to fight Vanitas and Master Xehanort alone while Ventus lie frozen by Xehanort’s hand and Aqua had to fight an ally of Xehanort’s for the boy’s safety. When Terra and Aqua both were weakened enough, Vanitas was sent after Aqua, and nearly killed her by divebombing her, knocking her out, and then stabbing her. This ended with her and Ventus fighting.
And this meant that the qualifications for the χ-blade had begun. In the end, Vanitas merged with Ventus, forging an incomplete version while there was a continued internal struggle. Aqua awoke and began to fight against Venitas, as fandom calls him. Terra, enraged at Xehanort for harming his friends, became swamped with his own darkness—and Xehanort unlocked his own heart, possessing Terra.
This is where the main AU begins, and nothing following will remain ever touch base with canon again. Everything prior to this touched very closely to canon, either drawn from the games or the supplemental novels.
As Aqua fought, it was a losing battle. She was easily overpowered, as in canon she had aid from Mickey Mouse. He, however, did not arrive on time, and left her alone in her struggles. This meant that Vanitas wasn’t nearly as divided attention-wise as she would have been in canon, meaning she could more easily crush Ventus within his own body. Which meant the χ-blade was completed, and all its powers unlocked for Vanitas. She quickly ended the battle, crippling Aqua by severing her spine at the waist and then crushing her Keyblade—and thus the ability to use it. Wanting Aqua to see the destruction caused, because Vanitas decided to watch everything slowly burn and she found some satisfaction in tormenting those Ventus held dear, she shed her last bits of kindness and caring into an Unversed that appeared like Ventus to serve as Aqua’s nurse.
From there, Vanitas quickly sought out Xehanort in Terra’s body, ending his life while Aqua watched from the sidelines. With the χ-blade at her disposal, it was easy. Vanitas, after all, didn’t want to take orders anymore. And so, the entire history of Radiant Garden was altered—as Terranort, as fandom calls him, was killed, he could not become the amnesiac Apprentice Xehanort, meaning that he never led the other Apprentices to betray Ansem the Wise and destroy Radiant Garden. It also means that Kairi never left, thus the Destiny Islands Trio never happened—as well as Organization XIII.
Vanitas then sought out Destiny Islands, where Sora and Riku were playing. At the ages of four and five respectively, sex didn’t matter as much yet, so they had become close friends even at a young age. Sora was willing to listen to Riku’s dreams of exploring other worlds, and even became just as excited as him instead of thinking he was just silly. This is what began their friendship, and what kept them close.
However, things ended tragically. As Riku watched from behind a barrier, Vanitas used her newfound power and a similar concept as that which forged the χ-blade to absorb Sora, reassuming her previous form. Sora was left to live within Vanitas for eleven years, watching as her friend was taken in by King Mickey to train with the Keyblade, then head off to spread seeds of hope through the worlds. Until, one day, he arrived in Vanitas’ castle—built on the remains of the Land of Departure.
A strange series of events occurred, then. Vanitas found herself subject to the influence of Sora’s heart for the first time in years, combined with the familiarity Riku’s scent provided (as it reminded the remnants of Ventus within her of Terra). Perhaps it was also her own desire to hold that hope of the universe’s in her hands, but she came to want to own Riku—to possess him. So she let him know the cruel truth of Sora still surviving within her. He was unable to lift his blade against her then.
So she offered him something. If he would become hers, she would give him an Unversed that looked and acted like Sora. And she did, dumping all of Sora’s emotions into a physical copy of what she might have looked like—mostly guesswork based on Vanitas’ own appearance. All of Sora’s memories and thoughts and feelings now had a vessel to work with, though the line between her and Vanitas was eternally open o that Sora’s heart could continue pushing its emotions out somewhere.
personality: To begin with, Sora is still Sora despite spending eleven years trapped inside Vanitas. She still had to watch everything, but this is also what gave her hope and kept her clinging to everything, showing that Sora is a very determined character who doesn’t like to give up for no reason. Watching Riku travel the worlds from a distance, seeing him restore as much hope as he could also gave her hope.
She is also a very optimistic person. Despite her circumstances, she can keep smiling because she’s not alone. She has Riku with her, she’s been reunited with her childhood friend, and this means that, maybe, something can be done about Vanitas. She’s always trying to look on the bright side despite circumstances, and always trying to cheer Riku up even though they’re both pretty much trapped.
Sora is also a very competitive person, challenging Riku to races through the halls of the castle. This isn’t something that has changed from childhood, and probably never will, as it helps Sora deal with the high levels of energy she has. It also just feels really good to stretch her legs after so long being trapped inside someone else.
Speaking of, Sora isn’t exactly mature. She last walked the worlds at the age of four, and all of her experiences since then were her watching from within Vanitas. So while she knows of quite a few things, this doesn’t mean she’s experienced them directly. This has the consequence of making her very much like an eager, young child.
This also means she is incredibly curious about things. If she and Riku don’t have anything actually planned for the day, she’ll often quietly read, absorbing information like a sponge. She also enjoys traveling with Riku to see other worlds because she’s still just as adventurous as she was back when she was a child, and she’s never gotten to experience the worlds first-hand.
However, this doesn’t mean she isn’t without her flaws. She is often haunted by what’s happened to her, so unless it’s Riku, she’ll actually shy away from touch. She also tends to act before she thinks, leaping into a situation before realizing the consequences. This has led to a few situations where she’s ended up hurt either emotionally or physically, especially once her ties to the Unversed get out. To this end, she has actually given up on trying to go swimming out of her own insecurities.
She also doesn’t do well alone, and never has. Perhaps the only thing that kept her sane while within Vanitas was that she was still technically with someone else. However, this has made her feel very lonely and isolated, as well as fairly socially awkward since she still somewhat operates like a small, over-eager child when it comes to attempts to befriend people.
This doesn’t mean, however, she’s as open as her canon counterpart. She has, after all, been isolated for eleven years, then made into a monster so her emotions wouldn’t affect Vanitas as strongly. And this last part has led to her being hurt by people she intended to help.
Speaking of, she tries very hard to be helpful, even going so far as to put others far before her own needs. She will willingly give up something she needs if another person needs it and not regret it even if it’s detrimental to her, because the happiness of others comes first—causing her to contrast with Vanitas and perhaps another reason why all of her thoughts and feelings were shed.
abilities/powers: Sora, as an Unversed, is physically fast and able to travel corridors of darkness safely. She is also much stronger than she seems, when it comes to physical strength. Her other Unversed ability is one they all have: the ability to feed off of the emotions of others, though this is typically only the negative ones. However, other than this, she is on par with humans—including being just as fragile, if not more so when Keyblades are involved.
first person sample: [Sora fiddled with the thin paper she once wore, tearing it to bits and pieces slowly. It’s not like it really mattered what happened to it, in the end. She wouldn’t ever need to wear it again.]…It’s strange, the things you miss. Like your own clothes. …But I especially miss one thing…
[The bits of paper rained down to the floor like confetti, sprinkled across it with no order. She continued to pick apart the pajamas she woke up wearing, doing nothing but frowning at the pieces.]…There was a necklace a friend gave me. A little crown necklace. I couldn’t wear it when I was little—it was way too big. And I… Never got the chance to wear it until recently. …I really want it back. Or to know that it’s with a very close friend of mine.
[She’s stopped picking and picking at the paper, sighing into her hands. What else was there to say, really? She wanted the memory—that tangible connection to one of the only friends she had.]Alternatively, there is
this.
third person sample: Perhaps it was silly, really, that she was so happy to be away from Vanitas’ reach, able to dart along streets as she pleases without the threat of people throwing rocks because word got around what she was. It didn’t make them any less dangerous, by being free of judgement was something she had long since been unable to feel except in the privacy of her master’s castle. And even then, she was subject to the jealousy and whims of said master, whatever they may be at the time.
But being with Riku was okay. Being with Riku was
always okay. He was safe, someone who didn’t care what she was because he saw beneath the surface to the inside, where she was still Sora. He could care for her despite everything, and that made everything easier. But he’s not there, so she had to simply be thankful for the lack of judging eyes. Perhaps there was pity, in this world, for her—she, after all, didn’t choose to be what she was.
So perhaps that’s why she enjoyed darting along the streets whenever she can, taking in the sights and experiencing a world for herself. She hadn’t gotten to do that back home, really. Riku had shown her everything or she’d seen it through Vanitas’ eyes. So now was time for new experiences—her own experiences.
