Ok, here's the story...
Leading upOn Monday before the boys were born I went to my usual 11 am Pilates lesson. I only did a half this week, it was just getting a bit hard to move around. I also had a doctor's check up in the afternoon (36 weeks, well on Wednesday). I saw Dr. Wilson and he said that I was 2 cm dilated. He also said not to get too excited as I could stay at that point for at least 2 weeks if they weren't ready to come. I was just glad to see that
something was happening.
I started having regular contractions Monday night. About 7-15 minutes apart, but they weren't bad and they went away in the morning.
Tuesday I had an appointment to get my hair cut. I didn't want to be 'needing' to get my hair cut right after they boys were born.
I was supposed to go to the Cub Committee meeting Tuesday night, but the contractions decided to come back. And they went away again in the morning. So much for getting any sleep :)
Wednesday Matt and I went to meet with the pediatrician. We were the first appointment of the day and it still took over 45 minutes before we were taken back. How do you get behind that early in the day?
Thursday night I met up with some wedding clients to give them their wedding album (which was awesome by the way...). Then Matt and I dined at Cracker Barrell and headed to the airport to pick up my mom. Yay! Mom's plane got in about a half an hour early, so we were a little late. It felt SO good to have her here. The nightly contractions continued.
Friday morning I woke up pretty early (well, I 'got out of bed' early... there had not been any sleep for several nights now). I tried to keep busy and not wake my mom up too early 'cause she needed to get used to Eastern time. At 8:30 I knocked on her door because the nightly contractions weren't going away this morning. She was awake, but still in bed. We talked for a while discussing all the things we needed to get done (go to Sam's, get pedicures, make sure everything was in order for the boys arrival... lots, needed attention). The contractions continues throughout our conversation. They weren't bad at this point and mom decided that it was still going to be at least a few days before the babies came.
Around 9:30 they started getting a bit worse, still not horrible, but they took all of my attention. I decided to start timing them. They were coming about every 3-5 min. I thought I should call the doc, but mom said that they weren't bad enough yet, so I should hold off. Mom then headed off to Mickey D's for some DC and breakfast. While she was gone I decided that I should at least call the doc and let them know what was going on. While speaking to the nurse I explained that I was 36 week pregnant with twins having regular contractions. She asked if they were taking my breath away and I said yes, but they weren't super horrible. She then asked how long it would take me to get to the office. 10 min. She then said that I should just come on in and get checked. I hadn't packed a hospital bag yet, so between contractions I threw a few things in a bag and waited for mom to get home. Mom was still skeptical about going in to see the doc (because my contractions just weren't
bad enough yet...). She was sure I was just going to get sent home, so she thought it was funny I packed my bag.
At the doc, I checked in and had a seat in the waiting area and waited! All the time having contractions every 3 min and breathing funny. Yeah, everybody was staring at me. I even happened to see another preggo friend of mine in the waiting area. Finally, they called me back to see Dr. Al. Did the usual weight check and pee in a cup. They checked my blood pressure and it was a bit elevated from its normal super low state. The doc checked my cervix and announced that I was 5 cm and should take my self next door to the hospital and get checked in! Mom was shocked!!!
It's time! The nurse walked us over to the labor and delivery desk at the hospital and helped me get checked in. Mom called Matt to leave work and get over to the hospital. I striped down and put on all the hospital garb and then they started prepping me for delivery. I had to have the IV for at least an hour before they would give me an epidural. I just wanted to
make sure that I
would get one, 'cause I wasn't delivery 2 babies without one. I also had to be given an antibiotic drip because I had tested positive on my strep test (which I didn't know about until this point, I had just had the test on Monday).

Matt got to the hospital right before they gave me the epidural. I was relieved to have Matt there and the epidural in place. I was also relieved that the boys waited until grandma was in town before deciding to come out! At this point the doc came in (Dr. Miller) to do one final ultrasound to make sure baby 'b' was in the head down position (they could obviously tell that baby 'a' was in the correct position). 'b' was cooperating and still head down. Things seemed to be progressing fairly quickly, and the doc thought I'd for sure be delivered by 5:30 or so. At 5:30 they weren't here yet, so the doc decided to break my water. At 6:30 I was fully dilated and ready to start pushing. They don't let twin moms deliver in the regular delivery room just in case they needed to do a last minute c-section. So, I was moved into the operating room and ready to push. Because we were in the OR, had 2 sets of nurses, 2 docs and experiencing a shift change there were at least 15 people in the room besides myself, Matt and my mom. Crazy!
Pushing was a LOT harder and longer than I had imagined! I'm pretty sure they had turned off my epidural, 'cause I could feel everything! The whole time I was pushing for baby 'a' I was just thinking 'there is NO WAY I can do this again! I can't push like this a second time, right after this!'. I pushed for about an hour to get 'a' out. He also gave me the inconvenience of coming out posterior with the fattest part of his head first! Finally, 'a' was out but there was only a moment of relief. The doc was concerned about 'b' as his umbilical cord wanted to come out before he did. They let me push once to see if he'd come out. And he sure did! Matt and mom were just surprised that the doc caught him, because they really weren't expecting him to come out. Then I was truly relieved! I did it!!! I was done! No more pushing! I was a mommy! (of 2!!).
I got to hold them briefly because they needed to be wisked off to be checked by the neonatologist. Then I was taken back to the labor room to recover. It was another hour before I got to see them again.

baby 'a'. look at his poor little head.

They're here!Perfect and healthy! What more could a mother ask for?

Our hospital stay was the usual 48 hours after delivery. We had several visitors (Mom, Gigi & Papa, Kristin, Kim & Bruce, Clair, and The Bishop and his wife). It was fun to see all the 'love' for the boys.

Proud daddy!

It was then time to say good-bye to the helpful nurses and start parenthood at home. I was just thankful mom was here before the boys came so we still had the help of fabulous nurse grandma at home :)
