Challenge #1: Update your fandom information.

  • Transformative Works Policy: This one's posted in a lot of places, but as always, all my fanworks are available for further transformation. I ask only for credit and a link to what you've created so I can appreciate it in all its glory!

  • Current Passion Eerie, Indiana is my always and forever fandom. Other stuff I've recently gotten (back) into: Buffy, The Sandman, So Weird, Star Trek (right now, Lower Decks especially has my whole heart), and Z Nation. I'm almost always in the middle of reading too many books. Also: NASCAR, my spouse, fannish meta.

  • Where to Find Me: I have accounts here and on AO3, Discord, and Tumblr under this name.

  • Master List: My fic is at [archiveofourown.org profile] deifire

  • Anything Else: My cats would like the world to know they still have never been fed even once in their entire lives.

I wrote one story in Yuletide this year:

Scene from a Chinese Restaurant (2009 words) by Deifire
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Eerie Indiana
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Janet Donner, Winston Chisel
Additional Tags: Future Fic, Eerie Indiana Local Politics, Implied Marshall Teller, Implied Mega Voodoo Eerie Weirdness, Chinese Food
Summary:

Several years after escaping the Lost Hour, Janet Donner meets Mayor Chisel for an important conversation.

My recipient's requested characters were Janet Donner from "The Lost Hour" and Eerie's nefarious mayor, Winston Chisel, and it was fun coming up with a scenario that would fit the two of them. The setting is the restaurant from the beginning of "No Brain, No Pain."

I didn't manage to get any Yuletide treats finished this year (boo!), but I did manage to meet my 2025 [community profile] getyourwordsout goal (yay!), largely thanks to finishing The Roller Rink on the Edge of Forever earlier this year. I've signed up for 2026 with a similar word count goal and plans for a fic with the working title Three. We'll see how that goes.

I'm also going to try to be more active on this platform. We'll see how that goes.

Meanwhile, [personal profile] evilinsanemonkey and I finished binge watching Season 5 of Stranger Things, so we could join the rest of the regularly scheduled internet already in progress without worrying about being spoiled. Overall, mild spoilers here ) I think we're going to watch it again from the beginning at some point now that it's finished, just to see how well it works together as a single story.

Yuletide!

My Yuletide gift is amazing! The Changeling by Zilpha Keatley Snyder was one of my favorite books and someone wrote me a perfect post-canon Martha/Ivy story:

The Doorway to Home (3677 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The Changeling - Zilpha Keatley Snyder
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Martha Abbott/Ivy Carson
Characters: Josie Carson (The Changeling)
Additional Tags: it's pre-relationship but I very much intend it to be pre-, Post-Canon, theater kids having theater kid feelings, and friendship feelings and gay feelings
Summary:

The idea of college felt very large and overwhelming, and much farther away than Cath seemed to think it was. Cath continued, "I suppose you'll be looking mostly at New York or L.A., of course, since you love acting so much."

Martha’s mother said “Yes, it does seem likely, doesn’t it?” and her father said “New York is awfully far away, though,” and her mother said “But the drama schools are famous there,” and everybody chewed over the idea while Martha sat stock still and stared down at her plate. The entire world was rearranging itself inside her head.

I've included some info here about general likes and dislikes as well as specific prompts for each canon, but the story I most want to read is the one you'll have fun writing.

This is it! It's finished. This is the last Roller Rink update I'll ever post. It feels so weird and exciting to finally get to say that.

If you check out the full fic summary or the endnotes you might notice a major milestone for this fic: The Roller Rink on the Edge of Forever has lost its total chapter count question mark.

As for how soon we'll get to the end, I can say that the first draft of Chapter 44 has been completed and should be in beta by the end of the week or so.

Chapter 42: On the Edge of Glory

The escape from the roller rink begins.

Also, because it looks like I forgot to post the announcement for this this anywhere back when I first published it:

Chapter 41: On the Edge of Something More

Someone has a plan. Maybe. Sort of.

I wrote only one story for Yuletide this year, but it was for a film I absolutely loved and I super enjoyed every word of it.

Excerpts From The Double Lunch: A History of The Pink Opaque and Its Fandom (3530 words) by Deifire
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: I Saw the TV Glow (2024)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Isabel & Tara (I Saw the TV Glow), Isabel/Tara (I Saw the TV Glow), Maddy & Owen (I Saw the TV Glow), Maddy/Owen (I Saw the TV Glow)
Characters: Maddy (I Saw the TV Glow), Owen (I Saw the TV Glow), Tara (I Saw the TV Glow), Isabel (I Saw the TV Glow), Original Viewing Audience Characters
Additional Tags: online communities, In-Universe Meta, Oral History, The Pink Opaque (I Saw the TV Glow), Fanfiction, Fans and Fandom
Summary:

The Double Lunch was the name of the fictional venue where a double billing of bands played in every episode of The Pink Opaque. It was also the name of a popular online community for fans of the show during the years it was on the air. Through interviews with former posters and an exploration of its archives, this work attempt to re-create a history of the show and the fandom that surrounded it.

Included here are select excerpts.

I'm not sure that I can adequately describe the impact I Saw the TV Glow had on me the first time I saw it in the theater, but I can say it was one of my very favorite things to discover this year, and I'd already watched it at least a couple more times before even getting my assignment. I was thrilled to receive Poetry's prompts for it, which let me spend some time with the canon and with fandom history in general, and thrilled at the reception it got.

The rest of the year leading up to Yuletide, it looks like I also wrote exactly one story.* Well, bits of it anyway. The following chapters of my Eerie, Indiana fic The Roller Rink on the Edge of Forever entered the universe in 2024:

Chapter 37: The Edge of Defeat
Chapter 38: The Edge of Eternity, Part I
Chapter 39: The Edge of Eternity, Part II
Chapter 40: World's Edge
Chapter 41: On the Edge of Something More

I can probably also reveal here that the initial drafts of Chapters 42, 43, and a big chunk of 44 have been completed.** They'll need some additional polishing before getting sent off to beta, but they're done.

* There was a lot of Life happening in 2024. To quote the philosopher T. Swift, "Long story short, I survived."
** Much of this as part of an epic speed run to meet my [community profile] getyourwordsout word count goal this year, which I did. \o/

First off, my Yuletide gifts were amazing!

2 stories in Terminator (Movies) and Hocus Pocus )

A handful of other things I really liked from the rest of the collection.

And One More Thing

This one isn't in Yuletide, but I've also been getting caught up on what's been posted in the the Eerie, Indiana tag since I last properly visited, and have to recommend the entire Better weird than in love series by chiiyo86, which is composed of four wonderfully done linked Marshall/Dash stories and starts here )

Challenge #14 Try something new.

I'm trying the new bookshelf buster challenge that my partner [personal profile] evilinsanemonkey created on The Storygraph, where we try to get through some of the books we already own.

He has more info in his post if you want to join us.

Along with this, I'm going to try actually being active on The Storygraph. One of my goals from earlier in Snowflake is to keep better track of the books I read and the films I watch, and this seems like a good tool for doing the first of those. (For the second, I may also try to become active on Letterboxd). I'm still figuring out how things work, but would love to have more friends over there.

Challenge #11: In your own space, create a fanwork.

I'm counting the ~2.5k words of The Roller Rink on the Edge of Forever I've written since this challenge went up, even though the chapter's not ready to post yet.

Challenge #12: Tell Us about a Personal Win.

In total, I've written over 12,000 words this month, which--especially given that my offline life currently involves a new job, an impending move, and some serious personal health stuff--is something I'm considering pretty damned phenomenal.

Also, I'm now closer to being caught up on Snowflake Challenge.

Challenge #8: Talk about a current fannish project (fic, art, vid, crochet, funko pop village) (that you are creating or enjoying)

This is probably going to be the mirror of the post [personal profile] evilinsanemonkey made earlier today.

Creating:

I am deep into working on finishing up The Roller Rink on the Edge of Forever, and just posted a new chapter yesterday. (And also finally remembered to update the playlist.)

I met my monthly [community profile] getyourwordsout goal in the process, so that's kind of a plus.

If a binge-watching marathon counts as a project, we're also working our way through every single episode of Bob's Burgers.

Enjoying:

[personal profile] evilinsanemonkey is writing the third installment of The Bureau of Lost series and has been a) creating a playlist for it, and b) reading the previous installments out loud to me as a way to re-familiarize himself with the continuity, which I've been enjoying immensely.

I need to go back and do challenges 5-7, so maybe look for those in the near future.
