Challenge #4: Rec The Contents Of Your Last Page
Any website that you like, be it fanfiction, art, social media, or something a bit more eccentric!

Since I'm literally using it right now and I never miss a chance to peddle it, I have to rec MyNoise -- the biggest collection of sound generators on the internet, I'm sure. I've been using the site for a decade, since its collection was much smaller, and I'll never go anywhere else for ambient noise. They've basically got everything -- fireplace, waterfall, cat purr, thunder, storms, all the classics, but you can also get drones of various kinds, white noise and other colours of noise, cafe/office background noise, loads of different soundscapes, and pretty much whatever.

There's one that's just record player hiss -- it's lovely to play alongside music! (Or do what I've done a few times -- open rain and fireplace in separate tabs and then play some solo violin music off Spotify, and voilà, instant 221B Baker Street.)

I've donated a few times, so I have access to all the generators (a single donation gives you full access permanently, so it's worth it!), but even without that, there are SO many good ones. And unlike those 10-hour loops of whatever on youtube, they're customisable -- consisting of several independent sound files, so you can alter volume for each frequency at will, alter playback speed, and set the sliders to "animate", which means you get constant variety. That also makes it much better at blocking out speech. Cannot rec enough!

Snowflake Challenge: A mug of coffee or hot chocolate with a snowflake shaped gingerbread cookie perched on the rim sits nestled amidst a softly bunched blanket. A few dried orange slices sit next to it.

Stumbling through the door late again! I'm not gonna lie, this one has been stumping me since it was posted, and it isn't because I don't have a lot of love for fandom, I do. It's just difficult to know where to start!

However: a toast (in Earl Grey, since that's what I'm having atm) to all the people who write fanfics for tiny fandoms.

I can think of a few fandoms and ships where I've literally only ever been able to find one, or two, fics -- and I cherish those like gold! Tbh I think the unsung heroes of fandom (well, maybe -- I've definitely seen some posts in praise of them on tumblr) are the people who have like 150+ works on ao3 and have written one really lovely fic in like a bajillion different niche fandoms. We owe them so much. Genuinely, no lie, that writer is who I aspire to be one day. If you are that writer, thank you. I'm handing you a hot drink of your choice. And how do you do it?

(And on the other end of the range, there's the one really long MacGyver fic that was posted on InsaneJournal, of all the places, literally 20+ years ago (and I live in fear of the day the whole platform goes down) and had such a good character reveal moment that it literally shaped my relationship with the trope. Absolute king shit. I still think about it regularly.)

First off: sorry this is a day late! 😅 Secondly: a profuse THANK YOU in advance! 🩷

Some general likes: I'm fairly omnivorous genre-wise. Plotty/adventure, humour, fluff, smut, hurt/comfort, angst, it's all good! Any rating, G to R. PWP is welcome, should you feel like it. I enjoy conversation/banter, flirting and bickering a lot. Love pining and 'firsts' -- getting together, first kiss, first time, etc!

General dislikes: "worldbuilding" AUs like soulbond, sentinel, His Dark Materials/daemons, etc. Kidfic, modern/regular human AUs. Toilet related kinks, very high protocol bdsm (the latter honestly mostly because in most of my fandoms I just can't see it happening, lmao).

Fandom specific notes:

ACD Sherlock Holmes )

Doctor Who (1963) )

Jeeves and Wooster )

Doctor Who (2005) )

Snowflake Challenge: A mug of coffee or hot chocolate with a snowflake shaped gingerbread cookie perched on the rim sits nestled amidst a softly bunched blanket. A few dried orange slices sit next to it.

Okay, I'm caving to temptation and adding to the roster of people on my flist doing this!

So: Hi! I'm J, they/she, from Norway.

I've never tried the Snowflake Challenge before, but it sounds like a fun way to get activity on my feed, and maybe remind myself to post more often. I find I struggle with the "effort" to keep up with DW as opposed to just scrolling something, but I hope it's just a matter of habit!

I'm a medievalist by training (using "medieval" in the broad, anglosphere sense; in Scandinavian terms my background is in Iron Age studies, i.e. the Viking Age and preceding eras, plus Old Norse lit). I don't blog about it really, but an interest in linguistics and history definitely informs my likes in general!

I'm semi-active in fandom: I write fic (ao3) and once in a blue moon I'll make an edit or some icons, and I do a lot of writing over discord. I've got a list of my fandoms here which is mostly up to date. Atm I'm very invested in classic Doctor Who. Other big favs are Sherlock Holmes, Star Trek TOS, The Terror, Vampire Chronicles, Withnail & I. A good chunk of my posting is fandom related.

Things I watch and read will probably crop up. Generally I enjoy older media a lot! I'm your classic "not keeping up with current TV shows because I'm too busy watching old ones" tumblr user (my tumblr is here btw). I read more genre than literary books, mainly classics, older horror, historical, and some fantasy, plus nonfiction!

Hello!

First of all, thank you so much in advance!! And just in case, because I always get a little apprehensive about writing fills: go where your heart and the plot bunnies take you, and have fun!! 💗

I don't really have any hard DNWs. Things that are sometimes less to my tastes are:
  • non-canonical MCD (in fandoms where it's canonical it's totally fine!)
  • "worldbuilding AUs", e.g. sentinel, soulbond, his dark materials au, etc.
  • heavy kink
  • kidfic (think "3 Men and a Baby" style)
Genre-wise, pretty much go wild. I enjoy angst, h/c and whump, but also banter, fluff/romance, plotty/case-fic/monster of the week fic, and straight up smut. For any of the fandoms on this list, any of these things is great. I ship the duos requested in all fandoms, but obviously write gen if that's your speed. Happy ending not required!

Fandom-specific notes under the cut! )

Challenge 2: Journaling: The romance of summer! What do you love? Write about anything you feel sentimental about or that gets your heart pumping.

One upside to the heatwave is that I've had the first ocean swim of the year! 🌊

Challenge 4: Journaling: What is making you smile these days? Create a top 10 list of anything you want to talk about.

This is not a Top 10, but it is a list of ten recent good things, in no order of rank.
  1. The Rain on a Tent ambient noise generator from myNoise (even better with slider animation on!)
  2. Actual rain (we finally got some)!!
  3. Cold grapes straight from the fridge
  4. My friend who needed surgery finally got it after days of delay!
  5. Solitude by Black Sabbath. I was really surprised to learn this was a Sabbath song, it's so soft and folky.
  6. About 45 minutes ago I captured and released a moth, and noticed it left behind some dust on the inside of my hand -- I anxiously googled, and found that actually, moths losing some scales is fine! Hurrah!
  7. I went for a run two days ago expecting it to be murder as I don't exercise at all, but it was fine!! I may have to do it again just for that. (Muscles still screaming, though, and I work evenings all week. Maybe on Sunday!)
  8. This blog on tumblr that identifies fonts!
  9. Postcard from a friend arrived 💗
  10. This whole bit from Jon Stewart last night, but if you don't want to watch all the serious political talk and would just like something a bit more uplifting, start from 24:54

Journaling Prompt: Light up your journal with activity this month. Talk about your goals for July or for the second half of 2025.

Goals for the second half of 2025, copied from my New Year's Resolutions list!

🌻 Buy a new bra - I hate shopping for bras, so I need the reminder. 😅

🌻 Crochet one [1] granny square - So far I've only learned how to do single crochet stitches and then got distracted, but my friend gave me a great crocheting book for my birthday, so I'm motivated! The ultimate goal is to make 9 or so squares (depending on size) and sew them onto one of my old totebags.

🌻 Read three books - Done! 🎉 I set this goal suuuper low on purpose because I never know if I'm going to hit a reading slump or not. This year I re/discovered not one but two series of great, short, light reading books, so I've read 3.5 Cadfael novels and 2 Jeeves and Wooster novels so far, plus one Doctor Who novelisation. At this rate I'm mostly on track for 12 books this year, which for me is v. good!

🌻 Comment on at least 1 fanfic per month - So far this year I've missed May, but otherwise I'm on track!

🌻 Post on Dreamwidth once per month - Heheh! This one I'm not doing so well with, but I'm persevering!

🌻 Highly ambitious goal: Get a new job - This one is mostly motivated by money: I'm not unhappy where I am, but the pay just isn't good enough (retail) when I'm only working part time. I am paying my rent though, so for now I'm allowing myself to not stress about it too much, and only apply to jobs I think actually sound nice, for my sanity.

🌻 Post one (1) anonymous fic on the Best Enemies kink meme - This one I thought would be really easy, and then it was really hard!! I think I get too in my head about writing to prompts, even when I really like the prompts: 'What if this isn't what the prompter wanted at all!' and so on.

I was only made aware of [community profile] raremaleslashex like last night, but I'm really excited about it!

I was too late to sign up, but that's fine, since I'm in a bit of a writing fallow season at the moment anyway. But I just went through the tagset, which is looking fantastic.

So many fandoms I enjoy are on there; list below the cut (this is like a really telling look at who I am as a person also lmfao):

Some real surprise noms: I would never have guessed that Raffles/Bunny and Aubrey/Maturin had less than 200 fics on ao3, but the latter is nominated for both the books and the movie! Feels fake.

This is really promising; I'm gonna have to remember to keep an eye out for this when the works drop at the end of August.

Well, I say just; it was a few days ago. But I just spotted the announcement on the home page:

June 2025 Newsletter, Volume 201

Published: Sat 05 Jul 2025 07:52PM CEST Comments: 18

Open Doors has nearly finished importing FictionAlley, a Harry Potter archive. With approximately 29,000 works imported so far, it is Open Doors' largest import yet. You can check out all imported works at the FictionAlley collection. Unclaimed works are currently locked to logged-in AO3 users only, but per Open Doors' agreement with the FictionAlley archivist, they will be unlocked 30 days after the import is fully completed.

I'm obviously having kind of mixed feelings about it. But first and foremost, the fact that they're preserved!! that the stories I read back in ninth grade are most likely on ao3 now!!! makes me really happy, and more relieved than I expected. I've checked back in on FA a couple of times in recent years and it always worried me a little that the site wasn't up anymore -- with how huge it was, the loss of fanfics would be enormous. A part of me is also really curious to head over and see if I recognise anything. But although I personally don't feel that writing (not to mention reading!) fanfiction is the same as endorsement in monetary terms, I still don't really think I could read HP fic without kind of a bad taste in my mouth. It's a relief just to know that it's there!

desecrets: (segundus hands)

The offerings on AO3 for Cadfael are, shall we say, not overabundant: the fandom as a whole has exactly 100 works, of which 79 are in English (the remaining 21 are all in Russian, interestingly!). If you filter specifically for Cadfael/Hugh Beringar, the number drops to 10. However! Many of the gen fics have a lovely pre-slash vibe which is very reminiscent of the novels, and honestly can be read as romantic -- just as canon can, imo.

Here are a few I've read lately!
