Inspiration
Building our game, we were inspired by Covid19 and how it attacks the body. We wanted to create a fun and educational tool that helps convey some information about Covid19 and what the science has learned about it so far.
What it does
2020-Enemy game is an FPS, or First Person Shooter, game. It is basically about a player stepping inside the virus' shoes, if we can call them that, to attack the human body.
How we built it
We built this game on top of Unity game engine. Each team member was responsible for some part of the game. We then had to build the game specifically for the web using WebGL module.
Challenges we ran into
Among other challenges, the big one was that we had to figure out how to sort through a multitude of resources about creating games in Unity. All of us in our team had never used Unity before. Thus, figuring out what resources fit better for our game was tricky. Furthermore, collaborating using Github workflow became increasingly difficult as our game got bigger and bigger.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are mostly happy that we were able to channel a few ideas about Covid19 in our game. We tried to keep it as scientifically accurate as possible, without sacrificing fun of course.
What we learned
As I mentioned earlier, no one in the team had done anything in Unity or C#. So we ended up learning a ton about C# and how games are developed. Flexing our designer and engineer brain to develop games. Thinking about what makes an interesting maze for people to explore? How can we make players double back and face challenges? How can players make right, wrong choices and be rewarded accordingly? We learn about the game development process(setting game milestones, gameplay mechanics, having user research interviews, and designing games accordingly). Some of us, in fact, ended up picking up game dev as a new hobby. And that's super cool.
What's next for 2020-Enemy
The next step in our game would be to keep expanding our game to closely mirror what happened with the pandemic. Adding vaccines to the mix, for example, will be super fascinating.
