The Game

In A++, the gameplay is rather simple: grade 5 exams from your 5 students every day for 9 days. The story is where the game shines. You're an Estonian immigrant who works as a substitute teacher, and you need to provide for your family by sending them money. However, your job doesn't pay too well, so you have to consider other, unethical sources of income. You'll have to make decide whether you value your family, your students, or your morals more in this game.

Community Impact

The impact of this game is straightforward: it's a game meant to entertain the community. But, there's also a bit more than just that. This game puts the player through the struggles of an immigrant; as such, the player is driven to ponder the situations immigrants and other low-income people find themselves in. Ideally, this game could drive people to help immigrants by donating to charities or something similar. This also shows how teachers are often underappreciated and underpaid to the point of having to accept student bribes.

Creativity

The creativity poured into this project shines into the story. Stories of immigrants are rarely told in the media, but this game tells one such story (even if it's fictional). When making the story for this game, we had to consider what dilemmas could be realistic and heart-gripping. The result is a unique story that engages the player.

The Theme

Admittedly, this game isn't directly related to Thanksgiving. That being said, it is related to the spirit of Thanksgiving in that the player is rewarded for being grateful of what they have. The best ending involves the player giving money to their family, and if the player is too greedy in the game, they get the bad ending. We can't elaborate on this without spoiling the game, so we'll have to leave it vague—sorry.

Story

We didn't have enough time to make an executable for the game, so here's a description of the story instead. Your family will ask you for money three times: first $100, then $200, and then $350. On the final day (when the $350 is due), your rent (which is $400) is also due; thus, you must make money. Students will attempt to bribe you, and you can choose whether to accept these bribes or not. If you accept too many bribes, then one student discovers your corruption and gets you fired. If you fail to pay your family, then you lose contact with them. But, if you manage to not get caught and pay your family every time, then you get the best ending: you get promoted to a full-time teacher (as opposed to remaining a substitute teacher).
