Inspiration
As SHEniusNetwork, we were inspired by not only all the iconic women in STEM who have become success stories, but also the women who know they wish to be in STEM yet don't know what they want to specialize in, or where to start. We talk about the experienced ones, the successful ones, the ones in the spotlight, yet we never really seem to remember the state of confusion we face when we're first stepping into STEM - even though we have all been there at some point!
What it does
AccelHERate is your ticket into the technology world! Whether you have already specialized in one career path but want to switch, or are just a student who has yet to kickstart her career, AccelHERate is your place to go. We feature role model women in technology who work in various roles across the globe, who have been instrumental in bringing technology to where it is today. We also help you find where your piece is in that puzzle via a career quiz, powered by AI to suggest what roles might be the best for you - think of it like the Sorting Hat of STEM!
How we built it
We first designed what the website should look like in Figma. Our next few hours were spent researching into different career paths and job roles in STEM, then descriptions, female success stories, bootcamps / certifications and average salaries for each of them. Then we split! Half of us worked on actually building the website, and the other half worked on the questions for the career quiz. At the end, we came back together to put the questions and the research we did into the content and implemented the Gemini API to determine career paths for each user who takes the questionnaire based on their answers, and the project was complete!
Challenges we ran into
- Timezones and availability. While it's nice to have people from diverse timezones so that all 24 hours in a day can be utilized in turns, this also meant not everyone was available at the same time when issues or questions were brought up that needed the entire team's attention. Some members also missed out on the workshops due to their timezones.
- Different levels of knowledge. This was both a blessing and a curse. A blessing in that we were able to exchange opinions from different points of view on the subject matter, and that we were all able to work on different things, but it was also a curse because when a particular team member needed help with what they were doing, not everyone in the team knew how to help.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Swift communication. The team kept in touch consistently through the entire hackathon.
- Ease in idea discovery. We were quite on board with the idea and quickly agreed on one! Little discourse happened in that regard, which meant we had more time to work on the project.
- Girl power. We built a project for the women in STEM, just like ourselves, and that ended up making us feel really accomplished!
- Diverse talents. We had members who were good at design, research, content and development! This meant we had a solid base in every step of the project start-to-finish and were all satisfied with the overall result.
What we learned
- We learned how to work as a team in diverse talents and timezones.
- We learned about programming concepts and languages not all of us were familiar with, thanks to the diverse use of technologies.
What's next for AccelHERate
- Only the future knows what's next, but the entirety of SHEniusNetwork really digs the idea! We're also glad to have been able to meet each other - these amazing teammates - for this hackathon and all of us will finish this hackathon with positive feelings in our hearts. Who knows? Maybe we won't walk away at all, and build the project further, or team up together again, in future hackathons!
How to test out AccelHERate
Below we have the links to the website and the GitHub repository. We have also included a demo video in case any technical issues occur!
