Inspiration
Seniors and individuals with lower digital literacy often struggle with today’s complex web interfaces. Modern sites are filled with tiny buttons, dense layouts, and hidden interactions that can make even simple tasks feel overwhelming. Agely was created to bring clarity and confidence back to the browsing experience.
What it does
Agely is a Chrome extension that helps seniors navigate websites more easily. It scrapes the current webpage, takes a screenshot, and identifies key elements like buttons, links, or input fields. When a user asks a question—such as “Where do I click to continue?”—Agely highlights the exact area on the screen, guiding the user directly to what they need.
Challenges we ran into
- Mapping natural-language questions to the correct on-screen elements
- Aligning DOM element coordinates with screenshot data for precise highlighting
- Designing a simple, senior-friendly experience despite complex backend logic
- Handling visual inconsistencies across different websites and layouts
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Building a functional accessibility tool that provides real value to seniors
- Creating a clean, guided visual experience without modifying the underlying website
- Overcoming technical hurdles to deliver accurate screen highlighting
- Transforming an idea into a user-friendly Chrome extension
What we learned
- How to bridge natural-language queries with UI element detection
- Chrome extension development workflows and browser constraints
- Accessibility-centered design principles
- The importance of building tools for digitally underserved communities
What's next for Agely
- Expanding support for more websites and UI patterns
- Improving detection accuracy, speed, and reliability
- Adding voice-based prompts and larger highlight options
- Integrating Agely into a broader accessibility toolkit for seniors
