User Research
To understand target users better, I organized questions based on college students' experiences with household responsibilities. My aim was to gather insights about their experiences and challenges in managing household responsibilities. Google Forms
Demographic Information:
- What is your current academic status?
- What is/was your living arrangement during your college experience?
- How many roommates did you have during your college experience?
Satisfaction and Conflict:
- On a scale of 1 to 5, how satisfied were you with the system or arrangement for sharing household responsibilities with your roommates during your college experience?
- Did you experience conflicts or disagreements with your roommates regarding household responsibilities during your college experience?
- On a scale of 1 to 5, how comfortable did you feel addressing conflicts related to household responsibilities with your roommates during your college experience?
Challenges and Communication:

- How did you typically communicate with your roommates about household responsibilities during your college experience? (Select all that apply)
Survey Findings
Duration: January 26, 2023 - January 27, 2023
Participants: 11 individuals from Reddit
I surveyed individuals who have experience or are currently living in shared accommodations to understand how they divide household tasks and if they encounter any conflicts.
- Approximately 73% of respondents (8 out of 11) reported experiencing conflicts or disagreements with their roommates regarding household responsibilities during their college experience.
- Approximately 82% of respondents (9 out of 11) expressed dissatisfaction with the system or arrangement for sharing household responsibilities with their roommates during their college experience.
- Similarly, approximately 73% of respondents (8 out of 11) indicated discomfort when addressing conflicts related to household responsibilities with their roommates during their college experience.
These findings highlight a common challenge for college students: managing household responsibilities with roommates. Conflicts and dissatisfaction suggest potential stressors affecting academic performance and well-being. Addressing these issues is essential for creating a supportive living environment conducive to student success.
Interview Findings
I also interviewed 9 college students to gain firsthand insights into their experiences and challenges. Engaging directly with them helped me better understand their needs, preferences, and pain points.
- “Understanding each other's thoughts and standards in shared households is tough, often leading to misunderstandings and conflicts due to a lack of mutual understanding."
- "Expressing complaints directly is challenging, creating a psychological distance that hampers communication between roommates."
- "When someone takes on chores for others, they want their efforts acknowledged but find it difficult to talk about their contributions since others may not be aware of them."
Describe your most important design decisions. What research findings and/or user testing results led you to make these decisions? (Max 500 words)
I've made several critical design decisions based on thorough research and user testing. Here are the key choices and the insights that guided them:
Clear House Rules: Understanding the significance of clear communication in maintaining harmony, I included a feature for setting and sharing house rules. Research findings emphasized the need for transparency and consensus-building, driving my decision to prioritize this feature.
Transparent Task Organization: I observed that users often struggle with organizing and scheduling tasks, leading to conflicts. To address this, I implemented a flexible scheduling system, allowing users to schedule one-time or recurring tasks with the automatic addition of weekly tasks. This decision was influenced by user feedback stressing the importance of clarity and flexibility.
Encouragement and Support: I realized the importance of fostering positivity and teamwork within households. Thus, I integrated a feature enabling users to send encouraging messages and emojis to fellow residents. User testing validated that this feature not only promotes a supportive atmosphere but also enhances user engagement.
Overall, my design decisions were driven by a deep understanding of user needs and preferences. By prioritizing clarity, engagement, and community-building, I aimed to create a user-friendly and empowering platform for households to manage tasks and foster a supportive living environment.
