Inspiration ๐ŸŒฑ

These have been strange times for employees in any organization. There have been a lot of changes in the workplace.

We witnessed record high resignations in 2021 with the phenomenon of Great Resignation.

Employees experience burnout regularly. Disengaged employees resort to quiet quitting. This not only results in losses for organizations but also robs employees of their true potential.

All organizations want to improve their employee wellbeing but org-wide surveys that happen every year is just not enough to understand if employees are happy at work. With employee well-being taking center stage in discussions, we realized the need for such an application. We felt that it was important to track employee happiness on a daily basis and also measure the teamโ€™s morale through a period of time.

App Idea ๐Ÿ’ก

Using our application, Amuseer (which is an anagram of the word โ€˜Measureโ€™) organizations can unlock a new level of insight into their employeeโ€™s well being. Our goal is to constantly track employee mood through quick questions every day before they start their day at work.

What it does โš™๏ธ

  • Employees can record their emotion on a day-to-day basis ๐Ÿ“
  • Connect emotions with a particular task. For example if a certain task is stressing out an employee, they can link their emotion with that task. ๐Ÿ”—
  • Add daily journal entries to reflect on that day. ๐ŸŒ…
  • A log of their recorded emotions is maintained that they can view at any time. ๐Ÿ“น

How we built it ๐Ÿ› ๏ธ

Forge as a platform is intuitive and and turned out to be very extensible ๐Ÿ˜Œ. It is worth mentioning that with Forgeโ€™s UI kit, building the application interface was a breeze๐Ÿ’จ.

The Stack that we used to build Amuseer:

  • Forge Platform by Atlassian
  • ReactJS
  • Webpack
  • Forge UI
  • Forge Storage API
  • Forge APIs
    • Jira Cloud REST API

Challenges we ran into ๐Ÿšง

We love how Forge provided everything required to develop a fully-fledged Jira integration right from the comfort of our terminal but there were some pain points that we came across while building with it:

  • The lack of ability to customize the UI to our preferences when using UI Kit to build our Forge app. ๐Ÿ’ป
  • Setting up Forgeโ€™s Custom UI tunneling was not very intuitive. We had to spend hours on getting it to work. ๐Ÿง
  • Even though Forge uses React underneath, it was especially difficult to figure out how each component worked with the usual React Hooks like useState and useEffect.๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ
  • Had to learn how to set up our own webpack configuration to work with Forgeโ€™s custom UI because we kept getting process is undefined error. ๐Ÿ˜•

Accomplishments that we're proud of ๐Ÿ†

Mental Health is a topic that we are all very passionate about and coming up with an idea that tracks the mental well-being of an employee is something we are insanely proud of.

We are proud of a myriad of other things we've done for this hackathon:

  • We joined during the last two weeks and were able to deliver a completed product right in the nick of time. ๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ
  • Being able to use the Forge platform to it's fullest potential by making use of UI Kit and also experimenting with Custom UI. ๐Ÿ˜Œ
  • Final Presentation Video - Initially we were worried about exceeding the time limit for the presentation. But we are proud that we put our heads together and re-worked on storyboard and got it under time. ๐Ÿ˜†
  • Turning in a submission itself feels like a big accomplishment, honestly we never thought we could come this far. Proud of reaching the finish line. ๐Ÿ

What we learned ๐Ÿ“š

When we first came up with the idea to build a happiness tracker of sorts for employees, we were going through several stats on employee engagement and happiness. We were shocked to understand that only a small percentage of employees in any organization are engaged. There were also several studies that pointed to the fact that happier employees were more productive.

However, not many organizations tracked employee happiness, even if they did it was an yearly or half-yearly event through detailed surveys. We came to understand that organizations could benefit from an application that empowered employees to track their emotions on a regular basis.

What's next for Amuseer ๐Ÿš€

We arrived on the scene pretty late ๐Ÿ˜“. Owing to a delayed start to the hackathon, we couldnโ€™t fully implement all the features & ideas we planned for.

In the following versions of the app:

  • We plan to include full fledged dashboards for both employees and managers.
  • Managers will get a dashboard of compiled inputs from their team members showing them the overall mood of their team. They can also track which issues are causing stress for their team and actively remove roadblocks.
  • Medium and longer surveys that are detailed to uncover more data points on employee engagement.
  • Mood trends for HR teams.
  • Integrations with HR systems and apps such as Slack and Microsoft Teams to help employees take surveys with ease.
