Inspiration

We were inspired by Federato’s mission, shared during the opening ceremony, to close the coverage gap between consumers and insurers. We wanted to design something that would not just help underwriters work faster, but also smarter, letting them personalize their approach and bridge that gap effectively.

What it does

Appetizer-IQ is an AI-powered underwriting dashboard that adapts to each underwriter’s unique style. From tagging submissions and calculating custom scores to generating AI insights/advanced portfolio analytics, Appetizer blends the functions of multiple underwriting tools into one. Its defining feature is personalization: users can tune the dashboard to anything they need, creating custom guidelines powered by Gemini AI.

How we built it

  • Backend: Flask
  • Frontend: HTML, CSS, Javascript, Django
  • AI: Gemini

Challenges we ran into

  • Scraping and structuring the data from APIs
  • Integrating Gemini AI effectively
  • Balancing customization with stability/usability

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Creating the personal vibe curator, which changes the underwriting guidelines to each user’s unique approach
  • Building an AI assistant that answers questions and can also change the dashboard
  • Graph ecosystem with a fancily curated set of portfolio/visualizations so users don't need third-party apps

What we learned

  • The socioeconomic and geopolitical ramifications of underwriting and insurance within the evolving landscape of financial technology
  • Integrating and using APIs with large data sets
  • The power of friendship with ai
  • How to prompt engineer with Google Gemini AI

What's next for Appetizer-IQ

  • Add keyboard shortcuts for absolutely everything so you can just press a key sequence and get exactly the info you need, making it even easier for underwriters to make decisions
  • Make Appetizer-IQ a Business-to-Business Software as a Service
  • Integrate Appetizer-IQ with a broader ecosystem
  • Connect easily to the client such as hosting the contract/legal documents (make it as easy as possible for the underwriter)
