Inspiration
Seniors need medical attention the most, so why not build an app for them ?
There is a lack of attention when it comes to urgency in the medical field for seniors, so we decided to create a time-saving app to help that need.
My grandma always had an issue with technology, so that really inspired me to create an app that was easy to access. She has to usually rely on other family members to make appointments to the clinic for her, so that kind of inspired me to want to make something for her, and other seniors in her age range that deal with similar issues. We always found that seniors in these unprecedented times especially have been neglected which is upsetting to see, which is why I think it is important to make applications like these to help support them.
The rapid improvements in technology has brought great convenience to our lives. That, however, might not be the case for the 703 million seniors that simply like doing things the old way. AppointMed is made to be a simple and straightforward app that helps seniors find medical assistance nearby with the click of a button. We believe this is very important because independence should not be a trait that erodes over time.
What it does
AppointMed is an app that shows nearby clinics based on your location and has easy appointment bookings. We chose the theme of green as it is a calm and soothing colour, along with bold and large words in order for them to see the app clearly.
How we built it
We built the app using a flutter framework through Visual Studio as the frontend. We then utilized Django for the backend and mobile. In order to simulate the flutter framework, we used the Android Studio emulator to display the app.
Challenges we ran into
This was for sure an interesting hackathon to take part in, it was very odd but a very unique and different experience that we enjoyed taking part in. We ran into challenges that involved implementing the google API using the flutter framework as we have not done that before. We also ran into issues when it came to pushing the code on time as we all had to rely on constant online communication.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud to have made an app that we can perhaps continue and expand on and that can make a difference within the community.
What we learned
We learned how to use APIs using the flutter framework, and how to collaborate using GitHub through updating and pushing files.
What's next for AppointMed
We would like to make this app accessible to more seniors, as such, we would like to include more language options. We would also like to include more features such as medication reminders making AppointMed the single app that can assist with all things medical.
