Inspiration
Public transport in Ingolstadt is boring, slow and complicated. Finding the right bus stop after leaving the bus heading to the next? Finding the connection to get from A to B? Improoved a lot since last time I tried and works nowadays. Therefore we wanted to improove public transport, first by good routing, then as that is solved by assisting with the transition from one bus to the next or by changing to scooters. As the scooters are currently already worked on, we went with the assisting through technology - Augmented Reality (AR) navigation. Through AR anything can be displayed within the real world. INVG considers their biggest problem not enough customers within the Bus, as it is slow and boring to travel and change busses. We have the idea AR and entertaining. I like scuba diving. Why not make a fun ocean world out of Ingolstadt and let the users collect corals and fish, decorate their favourite bus stops and in between get help by their favourite pet with sideseeing details or navigation.
What it does
Our web-app encourages the user to ride more often by bus. It is a fun game to ride a bus through the ocean and experience a lot of different sea creatures. During the ride you can find and catch new friends or enjoy the view of a hammerhead shark with your newly met passenger friend. You can also find some decoration for your favourite bus stop and decorate it. Once you arrive home, you can enjoy your awesome bus stop.
How I built it
Rapid prototyping with JavaScript, aframe and readily available 3d assets. Currently the whole development was based on creating a visualization of the idea and getting a better understanding of the best game scenario.
Challenges I ran into
Having ideas that are already in implementation is a huge challenge but also provides the opportunity to develop ideas in other directions that were dropped due to having more important problems to solve. Beside that, planning and constructing with limited amount of time to have a good demonstrator ready.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Having a ready and working demonstrator that displays sealife in the real world through the phone.
What I learned
How AR works and can be programmed. That it is not easily used on every mobile device available. It takes a lot more to create a good businesscase and find a unique idea.
What's next for ArINa
Setting up a backend and create the marking points for the bus stops so the phone can recognize the stops properly. Take a picture of each stop so it can be decorated during the bus ride. Check whether there is a better working technology than JavaScript and implement the basic gameplay. Then run the marketing to attract first users.
