Inspiration
As students, we often don't fully appreciate our ability to read, write, and converse. As it is habitual, other considerations seem foriegn. We often never consider individuals that may not be able to process the same way as us, or even learn using the same tools. Literacy is a privilege as often said, but it is also a right that everyone should have. Individuals diagnosed with autism have harder times gaining the skills needed to thrive in community, and uplifting these individuals in a society streamlined for one demographic can be overlooked. A substantial gap exists between regular learning tools for literacy and tools for individuals with autism.
We were inspired to make a change in the current education system, where individuals diagnosed with autism could easily access a platform with tools that could help enhance their learning. The idea came from connecting with our teachers, who informed us of the lack of personalized tools in classrooms for nurturing the skills of literacy.
We wanted to bridge this gap by introducing a autism-friendly application to the education world integrated with an AI companion, that guides them through the strands of literacy. Our primary mission is to bring literacy to people with autism in a easy, friendly way, spreading confidence through all.
What it does
AutiSpark is designed to build literacy skills for people with autism by combining structure, personalization, and confidence-building tools. Through three core strands—reading, writing, and speaking—it offers guided support that adapts to each learner’s pace.
Each strand comes equipped with an AI support person, Alex, who guides the user through problems step by step, explaining things through speech, as a high number of individuals diagnosed with autism excell at learning through audio. We use this throughout the app, with Alex essentially being a "on-call tutor" that responds to the user's body language, identifying emotions and offering support throughout. Further tools such as step by step prompts for writing, various conversation exercises, and guided reading provide both the support and tools for independance for effective learning.
With progress tracking for teachers and parents, and calming, badge rewards, the app provides an accessible, supportive path to literacy that reduces anxiety while empowering independence.
How we built it
We built Autispark with a focus on combining strong technical foundations with our goal of making literacy accessible for people with autism.
Frontend & Tavus Integration: On the frontend, we integrated Tavus to provide AI-driven speech guidance. Connecting user information to Tavus required creating secure pathways so that each learner’s progress could be personalized without adding complexity to the user experience.
Multi-API Connections: To support features like adaptive feedback and AI-guided prompts, we connected multiple APIs, including Gemini and Tavus. This meant designing a system where each API could communicate reliably while maintaining a smooth flow for the learner.
Database & Authentication: For user accounts and data, we combined MongoDB (for scalable storage of progress and preferences) with Auth0 (for secure authentication). This allowed us to protect sensitive information while enabling customization for each learner’s sensory and learning needs.
Design Alignment with Goals: Throughout development, we aligned our technical choices with our mission: predictable structure, sensory-friendly customization, and confidence-building learning. Every integration—whether speech, writing, or reading—was engineered to be simple, clear, and supportive for learners while giving teachers and parents meaningful progress tracking.
By blending technical problem-solving with a user-centered design philosophy, we built Autispark as both a robust application and a safe, empowering learning environment.
Challenges we ran into
Tavus Integration: One of our most difficult hurdles was setting up Tavus in the frontend and ensuring it connected smoothly with user information. This taught us the importance of building clean data pathways and gave us valuable experience in integrating advanced AI tools into a user-facing app.
API Coordination: Connecting multiple APIs, such as Gemini and Tavus, was more complex than we anticipated. Balancing how they communicated without conflicts helped us strengthen our problem-solving skills and gave us new insight into managing multi-API systems.
Database & Authentication: Bringing together MongoDB and Auth0 for secure data storage and authentication was another challenge. Through this process, we gained deeper knowledge of backend security, user management, and the importance of aligning databases with authentication frameworks.
Designing the Most Effective App: Creating an app that would cater to such a specific demography with specific needs and personalization was daunting. What if we misrepresent them? What if we make a mistake and everything is incorrect? The process of overcoming these set walls and truly learning about what it is we could do was challenging, as its not something we've had any previous knowledge in. In our eyes, the challenge was worth it, because we were able to crank out something we hope will make an impact.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Our user interface: we researched appropriate fonts, layouts, styles, and potential triggers for autism to create the best possible interface that would soothing and enjoyable, so that no anxiety or tension would be created by the visuals.
Integration of Tavus.io: the process of implementing an AI Human into our user interface and also training it to respond properly to certain visual cues that users may exihibit is a huge accomplishment. We conducted intensive research on autism social cues and the proper ways to react to ensure that our AI model was the best possible fit for our users.
What we learned
The creation of this project took a substantial amount of background research, to ensure that our platform would directly improve the lives of individuals with autism. As we gathered information, through both research and oral communication, a strong understanding was built for the struggles of people with autism, and how their lives differ greatly from ours. We wanted to share our key finding with you, so that you can be educated as well on this matter, and form a deeper understanding for a community often overlooked.
- One size doesn't fit all. Every individual is different and each comes with a different strength or weakness. Leveraging those and giving the option of versatility and choice is the most important. (Yes, we know it's a summary and very general, but even knowing a small fact can go a long way.)
We also learned another key skill: collaboration. Working together doesn’t come naturally, and it’s never a one-size-fits-all process. Being in a new environment challenged us to recognize each other’s strengths, weaknesses, and working styles. Through this, we discovered that true collaboration is not just about dividing tasks, but about growing together—and that growth is what makes a team stronger than the sum of its parts.
What's next for AutiSpark
This project has the potential to break barriers in the educational system today. This is not the end point, but only the beginning. In the future we will:
- Continue our research in autism needs and effective ways of meeting those needs, whether that being related to literacy or expanding to other subjects
- Implement our research into our application, so that we become more accurate than our starting point
- Refine Adaptive Learning: Improve personalization to meet each learner’s pace and sensory needs.
- Expand Customization: More font, color, and accessibility options for diverse learners.
- Pilot Testing: Launch trials in classrooms and homes to gather real-world feedback.
- Teacher & Parent Tools: Strengthen progress dashboards and support features.
- Vision: Grow AutiSpark into a trusted companion that not only teaches literacy but also builds confidence, independence, and meaningful communication.
