Inspiration

We at team Money Up wanted to create a fun, modern way for young people (mostly Gen Z) to be more aware of their impulsive financial decisions.

What it does

Users input the name of the item they want to buy and the price, as well as picking a number from 1-5 (1 = nice, 5 = mean) to determine the tone of the AI response. Using mock bank data from Nessie API and an AI analysis from OpenAI API, our app outputs whether your purchase is acceptable or a poor financial decision.

How we built it

Frontend: JavaScript (React.js) Backend: Python (Flask) Routes (AI analysis and communicating transactions): Python (Nessie API, OpenAI API)

Challenges we ran into

WE WERE ALL LEARNING AT LEAST A FEW NEW TOOLS! Our team has people who are mostly beginners, who have never set up a GitHub repository before, pushed and pulled code, set up virtual environments on VS Code, Fullstack dev, or even knew programming languages and frameworks like React, Flask, JavaScript, Python, and more! While we don't have a fully deployed application, we are proud of the foundational work we did.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that we went out of our comfort zone to build something we never built before with tools we never used. Our code may not be deployed or at a state that we want, but as a team we learned some valuable lessons about collaboration, camaraderie, project management + organization, and of course the technical skills associated with our project

What we learned

  1. Make sure everyone's environments are the same from the get-go, no leaving anyone behind (Ex. create a requirements.txt to ensure consistent packages across environments)
  2. Don't reach too close to the sun! While it's great to be ambitious, think about a realistic scope for your hackathon's MVP
  3. Be more prepared for next time! Now everyone has a better idea of the SDLC in a hackathon, we should all hone our technical skills for next time and level up our skills!

What's next for Avarice and team Money Up

We are thinking of expanding on this application in our free time, perhaps diving more into fullstack dev. We want to eventually deploy this and perhaps work with real bank data! We'd also like to make the AI more robust. This hackathon has inspired us to expand upon this project and hone our technical skills!
