this project is for the Spreading Hope challenge

Inspiration

With all the resources available to struggling students like the national helpline and school counselors, we were inspired to create a way for students to talk anonymously like on a national helpline, but with their own school counselors.

What it does

Awarenymous helps students struggling with mental illness in getting support.

Quickchat

Our Quickchat feature allows students to instantly match with a registered counselor and talk completely anonymously online. Students in need of a quick chat can access our Quickchat feature easily, without the need to input ANY information about themselves.

Contact Counselors

Our contact counselors feature is for struggling students to get support with their school counselors in-person. A major issue with school counselors is that it can be hard for struggling students to work up the confidence to reach out to them. This feature uniquely addresses that issue by helping students get the information of their counselor, and then providing them free email templates for them to utilize, so they do not need to stress about how or what to write.

Resources

We provide many other resources for students to utilize on our web page.

Our goal is to ensure every student finds the support they need by uniquely addressing the issues of anonymous chats with their counselor, and the issue of not being sure what to email your counselor. With Awarenymous, we are making the world a better place.

How we built it

Awarenymous was created with plain HTML, CSS, and JS. The tools we used were: the npm package Vite was utilized for development, but is not necessary in our final project. We used it to create a project template and do instant reloads when we edit. Additionally, We used Google's Firebase Realtime Database as the infrastructure for our Quickchat database.

Challenges we ran into

This was our first hackathon, so we ran into many issues concerning development, such as merge issues and conflicts on Github! It was challenging to manage our time and re-familiarize ourselves with web development, as well as come up with an idea.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Our Quickchat feature that instantly connects struggling students with registered counselors and allow anonymous real-time chatting

Our list of all Middle and High Schools in MCPS, along with the information of all of their counselors.

And of course, how good the web page looks!

What we learned

This was a great learning experience, thanks Brook Codes! We gained a lot more experience and knowledge in time management, web development (both front and backend), as well as coming up with ideas and pitching!

What's next for Awarenymous

Expanding our database of registered school counselors!
